FPC: A New Approach to Firewall Policies Compression

Firewalls are crucial elements that enhance network security by examining the field values of every packet and deciding whether to accept or discard a packet according to the firewall policies. With the development of networks, the number of rules in firewalls has rapidly increased, consequently degrading network *** addition, because most real-life firewalls have been plagued with policy conflicts, malicious traffics can be allowed or legitimate traffics can be blocked. Moreover, because of the complexity of the firewall policies, it is very important to reduce the number of rules in a firewall while keeping the rule semantics unchanged and the target firewall rules conflict-free. In this study, we make three major contributions. First, we present a new approach in which a geometric model, multidimensional rectilinear polygon, is constructed for the firewall rules compression ***, we propose a new scheme, Firewall Policies Compression(FPC), to compress the multidimensional firewall rules based on this geometric model. Third, we conducted extensive experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the FPC method outperforms the existing approaches, in terms of compression ratio and efficiency while maintaining conflict-free firewall rules.

Development of the Making the Connection Intervention to Address Loneliness and Isolation in Older Adults

Fifty percent of individuals aged over 60 are reported at risk of social isolation and one-third will experience some degree of loneliness later in life. Isolation and loneliness have been reported as having negative consequences for mental and physical health and mortality. Existing supportive interventions, even when successful are not widely adopted or utilized. A developmental, mixed methods approach was taken to building and testing the components and delivery of an intervention, Making the Connection (MTC) in preparation for mounting a larger, systematic test. Method: The approach relied upon the six steps of 6sQuID for the development of public health interventions: 1) Define and understand the problem and its causes. 2) Clarify which causal or contextual factors are malleable. 3) Identify how to bring about change. 4) Identify how to deliver the change mechanism. 5) Test and refine on small scale. 6) Collect sufficient evidence of effectiveness to justify rigorous evaluation/implementation. Depressive symptoms, how often people felt lonely, and size of social networks were quantitatively measured and analyzed. Qualitative measures were also used. Findings: All six steps in the 6sQuiD model were followed in building the intervention for potential testing. In an initial test within CCRC facilities, five loneliness-related areas were examined qualitatively and identified as potentially modifiable. Testing of a subsequent 10-session gamified intervention established trends for reduced reports of symptoms of depression, and increases in social connections. Pre and post-test found there was a statistically significant reduction in reports of loneliness in the past week. Discussion: Making the Connection manualized intervention appears both feasible and viable, a necessary first step to prepare for more systematic evaluation in a randomized control trial.

Older adults in disaster contexts are often thought of as a passive, vulnerable population that lacks agency and capacities to cope in the aftermath. However, it can be argued that older adults may have underrecognized strengths that can be utilized pre-, peri-, and post-disaster. One of these strengths is older adults' unique social capital that stems from long-standing connections with other members of their respective communities. Using data from in-depth, semistructured interviews with farmers in British Columbia 3–11 months after the 2021 floods, this research explored the experiences of older adult farmers' recovery. The farmers discussed how they leveraged their social capital to aid in their recovery efforts from the flood event. By using their bonding social capital, older adult farmers transformed their existing, deep-rooted connections into post-disaster assistance. This, in turn, generated the idea of the therapeutic community, helping community members cope in the aftermath. This research indicated the need to further examine how older adults in disaster settings can be viewed as assets with community knowledge and skills as opposed to solely as a vulnerable population.

“If I Do not Go to work, They Will Die!” Dual Roles of Older-Adult Personal Support workers' Contributions During the COVID-19 Pandemic

When COVID-19 devastated older-adult organizations(long-term care homes and retirement homes), most public attention was directed toward the older-adult residents rather than their service providers. This was especially true in the case of personal support workers, some of whom are over the age of 55, putting them in two separate categories in the COVID-19 settings:(1) a vulnerable and marginalized group who are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19;and(2) essential healthcare workers. Since the current disaster-driven research, practice, and policy have primarily focused on generalized assumptions that older-adults are a vulnerable, passive, and dependent group rather than recognizing their diversity, expertise, assets, and experiences, this study aimed to identify their contributions from the perspective of older-adult personal support worker(OAPSW). This qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews, inviting 15 OAPSWs from the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. This study uncovered the OAPSWs' contribution at three levels: individual(enhancing physical health, mental health, and overall well-being), work(improving working environment and service and supporting co-workers), and family(protecting their nuclear and extended families). The outcomes inform the older-adult research, practice, policy, public discourse, and education by enhancing the appreciation of older-adults' diverse strengths and promoting their engagement and contributions in disaster settings.
