Regression discontinuity design and its applications to Science of Science:A survey

Purpose:With the availability of large-scale scholarly datasets,scientists from various domains hope to understand the underlying mechanisms behind science,forming a vibrant area of inquiry in the emerging“science of science”field.As the results from the science of science often has strong policy implications,understanding the causal relationships between variables becomes prominent.However,the most credible quasi-experimental method among all causal inference methods,and a highly valuable tool in the empirical toolkit,Regression Discontinuity Design(RDD)has not been fully exploited in the field of science of science.In this paper,we provide a systematic survey of the RDD method,and its practical applications in the science of science.Design/methodology/approach:First,we introduce the basic assumptions,mathematical notations,and two types of RDD,i.e.,sharp and fuzzy RDD.Second,we use the Web of Science and the Microsoft Academic Graph datasets to study the evolution and citation patterns of RDD papers.Moreover,we provide a systematic survey of the applications of RDD methodologies in various scientific domains,as well as in the science of science.Finally,we demonstrate a case study to estimate the effect of Head Start Funding Proposals on child mortality.Findings:RDD was almost neglected for 30 years after it was first introduced in 1960.Afterward,scientists used mathematical and economic tools to develop the RDD methodology.After 2010,RDD methods showed strong applications in various domains,including medicine,psychology,political science and environmental science.However,we also notice that the RDD method has not been well developed in science of science research.Research Limitations:This work uses a keyword search to obtain RDD papers,which may neglect some related work.Additionally,our work does not aim to develop rigorous mathematical and technical details of RDD but rather focuses on its intuitions and applications.Practical implications:This work proposes how to use the RDD method in science of science res

The Chinese population is entering a new stage of development,marked by the fertility intentions of women of childbearing age continuing to decline and concerns over their consistently low fertility rates.The number of newborns has been decreasing annually,with 2022 figures falling below 10 million for the first time since the founding of the People’s Republic of China,resulting in negative population growth(1).Currently,China’s population over the age of 60 years is nearing 300 million and is projected to surpass 20%of the total population during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

In the face of increasingly severe cybersecurity threats, ASEAN countries have significantly strengthened their emphasis on cybersecurity, which has also become an important area of cooperation between ASEAN and non-regional countries and international organizations. China and ASEAN share extensive common interests in safeguarding cybersecurity and have enormous cooperation potential. Expanding and deepening cooperation in cybersecurity can not only create a sound environment for the development of digital economy, but also promote the building of a community of shared future in cyberspace.

Macro Debt Burden and Consumption Expansion:An Analysis Based on Panel Model and Panel Quantile Regression Model

As the level of social credit burden rises,to ease the liquidity constraint for residents is currently an important way to boost the domestic demand in China.This paper uses the panel data of Chinese provincial-level administrative units in 2007−2017 and adopts the panel regression model and panel quantile regression model to empirically analyze the relationship between debt burden level and average propensity to consume(APC).The result shows that increase in the level of macro debt burden can significantly improve the APC of residents;the marginal promoting effect of macro debt burden for the APC is in a V-shaped structure;such marginal influence differs evidently in different areas,with the marginal promoting effect turning out most prominent in the northeast of China.Accordingly,it’s suggested for government to keep refining the credit market,increase residents’income in multiple means,guide supply of liquidity towards the real economy and promote equalization of basic public services,so as to realize the expansion and upgrade of consumption.

Identifying Neighborhood Effects on Geohazard Adaptation in Mountainous Rural Areas of China:A Spatial Econometric Model

In mountainous rural settlements facing the threat of geohazards,local adaptation is a self-organizing process influenced by individual and group behaviors.Encouraging a wide range of local populations to embrace geohazard adaptation strategies emerges as a potent means of mitigating disaster risks.The purpose of this study was to investigate whether neighbors influence individuals'adaptation decisions,as well as to unravel the mechanisms through which neighborhood effects exert their influence.We employed a spatial Durbin model and a series of robustness checks to confirm the results.The dataset used in this research came from a face-to-face survey involving 516 respondents residing in 32 rural settlements highly susceptible to geohazards.Our empirical results reveal that neighborhood effects are an important determinant of adaptation to geohazards.That is,a farmer's adaptation decision is influenced by the adaptation choices of his/her neighbors.Furthermore,when neighbors adopt adaptation strategies,the focal individuals may also want to adapt,both because they learn from their neighbors'choices(social learning)and because they tend to abide by the majority's choice(social norms).Incorporating neighborhood effects into geohazard adaptation studies offers a new perspective for promoting disaster risk reduction decision making.

Dialect Diversity,Factor Agglomeration and City Size:Empirical Test Based on Satellite Night-Time Light Data

Since the reform and opening up program was initiated in 1978,China’s urbanization has made rapid progress,but urban development remains unbalanced and insufficient.From the perspective of social and cultural diversity,this paper explores the impact of dialect diversity on city size.Dialect diversity impedes the expansion of cities by causing a trust segmentation and impeding cross-regional factor flow and the factor agglomeration effect.Based on the regional dialect diversity indicator and the NPP-VIIRS city night-time light index of 2016,this paper offers an empirical study of the impact of dialect diversity on city size.Econometric results indicate that dialect diversity has a significantly negative impact on city size.On average,an increase of each dialect sub-category leads to a decrease in city size estimated by the night-time light index by 4.55%.Robustness test and causality identification reveal that the estimated results of this paper have a robust causal relationship.Further empirical research indicates that dialect diversity affects the expansion of city size by inhibiting the flow and agglomeration of labor,capital and technology factors.Our research suggests that the development of diverse and inclusive modern cities needs to balance the costs and benefits of cultural diversity and uniformity,break through cultural barriers,remove cultural prejudices,raise the level of social trust,and give play to the complementary effect of cultural diversity.

Central government agencies in China:toward a research agenda

Central government agencies play key roles in making and implementing public policies in China,but the empirical studies on these organisations are disproportionally scarce.Scholars in political science and public administration predominantly focus their researches on local governments at various levels,while paying little,if any,attention to the central counterparts.This article discusses the phenomenon of strong local but weak central government research pattern(the so called‘central-local research divide’),and identifies the driving forces behind this research gap.It also introduces the lessons and implications from the US and European research projects for developing,replicating,and extending central agency databases.The research further elaborates the existing variables and data sources on central agencies and develops the China Central Agency Database(CCAD)to advance the quantitative research of central agencies in China.Finally,a conclusion is drawn with a research agenda to encourage researchers to coproduce the CCAD and embrace the study of central agencies.

Insight into the Disciplinary Structure of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology

Purpose： This paper aims to gain an insight into the disciplinary structure of nanoscience ＆ nanotechnology （N＆N）： What is the disciplinary network of N＆N like？ Which disciplines are being integrated into N＆N over time？ For a specific discipline, how many other disciplines have direct or indirect connections with it？ What are the distinct subgroups of N＆N at different evolutionary stages？ Such critical issues are to be addressed in this paper. Design/methodology/approach： We map the disciplinary network structure of N＆N by employing the social network analysis tool, Netdraw, identifying which Web of Science Categories （WCs） mediate nbetweenness centrality in different stages of nano development. Cliques analysis embedded in the Ucinet program is applied to do the disciplinary cluster analysis in the study according to the path of ＂Network-Subgroup-Cliques,＂ and a tree diagram is selected as the visualizing type. Findings： The disciplinary network structure reveals the relationships among different disciplines in the N＆N developing process clearly, and it is easy for us to identify which disciplines are connected with the core ＂N＆N＂ directly or indirectly. The tree diagram showing N＆N related disciplines provides an interesting perspective on nano research and development （R＆D） structure. Research limitations： The matrices used to draw the N＆N disciplinary network are the original ones, and normalized matrix could be tried in future similar studies. Practical implications： Results in this paper can help us better understand the disciplinary structure of N＆N, and the dynamic evolution of N＆N related disciplines over time. The findings could benefit R＆D decision making. It can support policy makers from government agencies engaging in science and technology （S＆T） management or S＆T strategy planners to formulate efficient decisions according to a perspective of converging sciences and technologies. Factors Influencing the Entrepreneurial Intentions of Hong Kong and Macao Students in Chinese Mainland Universities in the Context of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area:A Study from the Perspective of Cultivating Innovative Talents

Based on the theory of planned behavior,this study considers entrepreneurial traits and divides the entrepreneurial environment into policy environment,economic environment,and educational and cultural environment.Using SPSS 23.0 and Amos 24.0 softwares,a structural equation model of entrepreneurial intentions for university students originating from Hong Kong and Macao is constructed.A questionnaire survey method is used to collect data from 689 Hong Kong and Macao students in Chinese mainland universities to explore the factors influencing their entrepreneurial intentions and the ranges of their entrepreneurial intentions based on demographic variables.The results show that entrepreneurial attitude,subjective norms,perceived behavioral control,entrepreneurial traits,and entrepreneurial environment have a significant positive impact on the entrepreneurial intentions of Hong Kong and Macao students in the mainland universities.Male students have a higher level of entrepreneurial intentions than female students.Hong Kong students are more likely to have entrepreneurial intentions than Macao students,and students in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(briefly,Greater Bay Area)universities are more likely to have such intentions than those from non-Greater Bay Area universities.Students majoring in science,engineering and medicine show a lower likelihood of intension than those majoring in humanities and social sciences.To comprehensively improve the entrepreneurial intentions of Hong Kong and Macao students and enable them to better shoulder their responsibilities in sharing the development dividends of the Greater Bay Area,it is necessary to start from the entrepreneurial environment and from the perspective of cultivating innovative talents.A support framework that integrates a training system,an ecological system,and a resource system is proposed to support students from Hong Kong and Macao in entrepreneurial development in the mainland.
