Experimental determination of heat generation rates of lithium-ion batteries by thermal protection method

Experimental determination of heat generation rates is crucial in the thermal safety design of automotive batteries. A thermal protection method(TPM) is proposed to determine the heat generation rates of 18650 cylindrical lithium-ion batteries under different discharge rates. The physical model based on the thermal protection method is established, and its feasibility is demonstrated through theoretical analysis. In the experimental setup, by introducing lateral thermal protection batteries(TPB) to minimize the heat loss of the center test battery(CTB), heat generation rates of the battery can be obtained based on the temperature change of the CTB. The average heat generation rates of the battery at 1, 2, and 3 C discharge rates are found to be0.255, 0.844, and 1.811 W, respectively, which can be quadratically correlated with the discharge rate. In addition, a benchmark test of the present measurement against the commonly used accelerating rate calorimeter(ARC) was conducted. Relatively small deviations of 3.77%, 4.20%, and 1.09% were identified in the heat generation rates for the discharge rates at 1, 2, and 3 C. In comparison with the ARC equipment, the present TPM can be more representative of the transient battery heat generation characteristics with a much shorter time for thermal equalization. Finally, to further verify the accuracy of the present method,standard samples of the same size as the actual battery were made, which were capable of controlling heat generation through a direct current power supply. A comparison of the heat inputs of the standard sample with the heat generation rates measured by the thermal protection method shows a relative deviation of 1.01% maximum. With high measurement accuracy and an easy-tobuild experimental setup, the proposed method has promising prospects in automotive applications.

Investigating natural-inspired applications is a perennially appealing subject for scientists. The current increase in the speed of natural-origin structure growth may be linked to their superior mechanical properties and environmental resilience. Biological composite structures with helicoidal schemes and designs have remarkable capacities to absorb impact energy and withstand damage. However, there is a dearth of extensive study on the influence of fiber redirection and reorientation inside the matrix of a helicoid structure on its mechanical performance and reactivity. The present study aimed to explore the static and transient responses of a bio-inspired helicoid laminated composite(B-iHLC) shell under the influence of an explosive load using an isomorphic method. The structural integrity of the shell is maintained by a viscoelastic basis known as the Pasternak foundation, which encompasses two coefficients of stiffness and one coefficient of damping. The equilibrium equations governing shell dynamics are obtained by using Hamilton's principle and including the modified first-order shear theory,therefore obviating the need to employ a shear correction factor. The paper's model and approach are validated by doing numerical comparisons with respected publications. The findings of this study may be used in the construction of military and civilian infrastructure in situations when the structure is subjected to severe stresses that might potentially result in catastrophic collapse. The findings of this paper serve as the foundation for several other issues, including geometric optimization and the dynamic response of similar mechanical structures.

The increasingly stringent emission regulations and fuel consumption requirements have elevated the demands of internal combustion engines with higher fuel efficiency and lower *** has been widely demonstrated that fash boiling spray can generate shorter and wider spray with improved atomization and evaporation to promote a better air-fuel mixing *** this study,macroscopic(far-field)spray morphologies and primary breakup(near-field)characteristics of a two-hole gasoline direct injection injector are investigated under non-flash boiling and flash boiling *** speed macroscopic and microscopic imaging was used to capture the overall spray structure and near-field characteristics,respectively.N-Hexane is used as the test fuel with the injection pressure ranging from 10 MPa up to 40 *** sub-cooled liquid fuel sprays,increasing fuel pressure contributes to enhanced fuel atomization and *** collapses occurred under fare flash boiling conditions,and higher injection pressure weakened this phenomenon since the spray cone angle decreased due to a higher injection velocity.

This study investigated the formation mechanism of new grains due to twin–twin intersections in a coarse-grained Mg–6Al–3Sn–2Zn alloy during different strain rates of an isothermal *** results of electron backscattered diffraction investigations showed that the activated twins were primarily{1012}tension twins,and 60°boundaries formed due to twin–twin intersections under different strain *** twin variants with 60°boundaries transformed into new grains through lattice rotations at a low strain rate(0.01 s^(−1)).At a high strain rate(10 s^(−1)),the regions surrounded by subgrain boundaries through high-density dislocation arrangement and the 60°boundaries transformed into new grains via dynamic recrystallization.

Examination of two-phase behaviors in porous media during pool boiling

The enhancement of pool boiling heat transfer using porous media has been extensively *** the two-phase distribution and evolution in porous media are crucial to the heat transfer performance,including the critical heat flux(CHF)and heat transfer coefficient(HTC),direct observation of the two-phase flow inside the media is limited owing to the blockage of the direct view from the porous *** this study,pool boiling visualization experiments were conducted on porous samples with different throat widths in deionized *** results showed that the HTC increased with the throat ***,the growth-contraction cycle of the vapor region and the formation and drying of the wall liquid film inside the porous media were *** vapor region,including the maximum and minimum areas in the boiling cycle,was quantitatively ***,the relationship between the minimum gas-phase area and HTC peak was identified.A one-dimensional transient model was developed considering solid skeleton heat conduction,liquid film evaporation,and vapor region growth to quantitatively study the influence of heat flux on the internal two-phase *** model successfully captured the maximum gas-phase area,duration of boiling cycles,and HTC trends at specific heat *** results of this quantitative study provide insights into the internal two-phase distribution and evolution induced by pool boiling.

Reshaping force for deformed casing repairing with hydraulic rolling reshaper and its influencing factors

Hydraulic rolling reshaper is an advanced reshaping tool to solve the problem of casing deformation,which has been widely used in recent years. When it is used for well repair operation, the reshaping force provided by ground devices is generally determined by experience. However, too large reshaping force may destroy the deformed casing, and too small reshaping force may also prolong the construction period and affect the repairing effect. In this paper, based on Hertz contact theory and elastic-plastic theory, combined with the process parameters of shaping, and considering the structural characteristics of the deformed casing and reshaper, we propose a mathematical model for calculating the reshaping force required for repairing deformed casing by hydraulic rolling reshaper. Meanwhile, the finite element model and numerical method of hydraulic rolling reshaper repairing deformed casing are established by using the finite element method, and the reliability of the mathematical model is verified by several examples. On this basis, the control variable method is used to investigate the influence of each parameter on the reshaping force, and the influence degree of each parameter is explored by orthogonal simulation test and Pearson correlation analysis. The research results not only provide an important theoretical basis for the prediction of reshaping force in on-site construction, but also provide a reference for the subsequent improvement of the shaping process.

Co-estimation of state-of-charge and state-of-temperature for large-format lithium-ion batteries based on a novel electrothermal model

The safe and efficient operation of the electric vehicle significantly depends on the accurate state-of-charge(SOC)and state-of-temperature(SOT)of Lithium-ion(Li-ion)*** the influence of cross-interference between the two states indicated above,this study establishs a co-estimation framework of battery SOC and *** framwork is based on an innovative electrothermal model and adaptive estimation *** first-order RC electric model and an innovative thermal model are components of the electrothermal ***,the thermal model includes two lumped-mass thermal submodels for two tabs and a two-dimensional(2-D)thermal resistance network(TRN)submodel for the main battery body,capable of capturing the detailed thermodynamics of large-format Li-ion ***,the proposed thermal model strikes an acceptable compromise between the estimation fidelity and computational complexity by representing the heat transfer processes by the thermal ***,the adaptive estimation algorithms are composed of an adaptive unscented Kalman filter(AUKF)and an adaptive Kalman filter(AKF),which adaptively update the state and noise *** the estimation results,the mean absolute errors(MAEs)of SOC and SOT estimation are controlled within 1%and 0.4°C at two temperatures,indicating that the co-estimation method yields superior prediction performance in a wide temperature range of 5–35°C.

Cool white light and tunable multicolor emission from Tb^(3+)/Dy^(3+)co-activated glasses under different excitations for WLEDs

A set of co-doped(Tb^(3+)/Dy^(3+))lithium zinc borate(LZB)glasses were developed by melt *** structural evaluation was performed for synthesized glassy *** Dy^(3+)and Tb^(3+)individually doped glasses exhibit intense yellow and green luminescence bands at 575 nm(^(4)F_(9/2)→^(6)H_(13/2))and543 nm(^(5)D_(4)→^(7)F_(5)),*** sensitization effect of Dy^(3+)on Tb^(3+)was analyzed by increasing the Tb^(3+)content with respect to the optimum Dy^(3+)content(0.5 mol%)in Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+).The spectral overlay of Dy^(3+)luminescence and Tb^(3+)absorption profiles,Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)PL spectra under different excitations 352,362,376,and 385 nm,shortening decay lifetimes of Dy^(3+)in Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)co-activated glasses,energy transfer(ET)parameters,chromaticity coordinates and their corresponding correlated temperatures all help to explain ET from Dy^(3+)to Tb^(3+).At 385 nm of Dy^(3+)excitation,the optimized co-activated(0.5Dy^(3+)+1.0Tb^(3+)):LZB glass displays cool white light *** non-radiative ET from Dy^(3+)to Tb^(3+)is dominated by electric dipole-dipole interaction and its ET efficiency was calculated to be 63%.At the same time,reverse ET from Tb^(3+)to Dy^(3+)was also *** shift in color coordinates from dominant yellow to greenish-yellow,green and white light emission suggests that Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)coactivated LZB glasses can be a potential candidate for UV converted multicolor and white light emitting devices.
