Understanding the paleoenvironment and phytogeographical history of the Tibetan Plateau,China relies on discovering new plant fossils.The Qaidam Basin has long been regarded as an ideal‘field laboratory’to investigate the paleoclimate and paleobiological evolution of the northern Tibetan Plateau.However,fossil angiosperms from the Qaidam Basin are rare,and our knowledge of its paleovegetation is poor.Here,we report fossil leaves and fruits of Betulaceae found from the Oligocene Shangganchaigou Formation of northwestern Qaidam Basin(Huatugou area).Comparative morphological analysis led us to assign the fruits to the Betula subgenus Betula and the leaves to Carpinus grandis.These findings,together with other reported fossil plants from the same locality,reveal a close floristic linkage between the Qaidam Basin and Europe during the Oligocene.The northern pathway of this floristic exchange may have crossed through the Qaidam Basin during the late Paleogene.This floristic linkage may have been facilitated by the continuous narrowing of the Turgai Strait and stronger westerlies,which transported moisture and provided favorable climatic conditions.Indeed,fossil plants collected from the Qaidam Basin suggest that during the Oligocene this region had warm and humid deciduous broad-leaf forest,which differs from the region’s modern vegetation and indicates that the Qaidam Basin may have been a suitable region for these plants to flourish and spread during the Oligocene.

RING finger 187(RNF187),a ubiquitin-ligating(E3)enzyme,plays a crucial role in the proliferation of cancer cells.However,it remains unclear whether RNF187 exhibits comparable functionality in the development of germline cells.To investigate thepotential involvement of RNF187 in germ cell development,we conducted interference and overexpression assays using GC-2 cells,a mouse spermatocyte-derived cell line.Our findings reveal that the interaction between RNF187 and histone H3 increases theviability,proliferation,and migratory capacity of GC-2 cells.Moreover,we provide evidence demonstrating that RNF187 interactswith H3 and mediates the ubiquitination of H3 at lysine 57(K57)or lysine 80(K80),directly or indirectly resulting in increasedcellular transcription.This is a study to report the role of RNF187 in maintaining the development of GC-2 cells by mediatinghistone H3 ubiquitination,thus highlighting the involvement of the K57 and K80 residues of H3 in the epistatic regulation of genetranscription.These discoveries provide a new theoretical foundation for further comprehensive investigations into the functionof RNF187 in the reproductive system.

Exosome-encapsulated lncRNA HOTAIRM1 contributes to PM_(2.5)-aggravated COPD airway remodeling by enhancing myofibroblast differentiation

Emphysema,myofibroblast accumulation and airway remodeling can occur in the lungs due to exposure to atmospheric pollution,especially fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5)),leading to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).Specifically,bronchial epithelium-fibroblast communication participates in airway remodeling,which results in COPD.An increasing number of studies are now being conducted on the role of exosome-mediated cell-cell communication in disease pathogenesis.Here,we investigated whether exosomes generated from bronchial epithelial cells could deliver information to normal stromal fibroblasts and provoke cellular responses,resulting in airway obstruction in COPD.We studied the mechanism of exosome-mediated intercellular communication between human bronchial epithelial(HBE) cells and primary lung fibroblasts(pLFs).We found that PM_(2.5)-induced HBE-derived exosomes promoted myofibroblast differentiation in pLFs.Then,the exosomal lncRNA expression profiles derived from PM_(2.5)-treated HBE cells and nontreated HBE cells were investigated using an Agilent human LncRNA Array.Combining coculture assays and direct exosome treatment,we found that HBE cell-derived exosomal HOTAIRM1 facilitated the myofibroblast differentiation of pLFs.Surprisingly,we discovered that exosomal HOTAIRM1 enhanced p LF proliferation to secrete excessive collagen secretion,leading to airway obstruction by stimulating the TGF-β/SMAD3 signaling pathway.Significantly,PM_(2.5)reduced FEV1/FVC and FEV1 and increased the level of serum exosomal HOTAIRM1 in healthy people;moreover,serum exosomal HOTAIRM1 was associated with PM_(2.5)-related reductions in FEV1/FVC and FVC.These findings show that PM_(2.5)triggers alterations in exosome components and clarify that one of the paracrine mediators of myofibroblast differentiation is bronchial epithelial cell-derived HOTAIRM1,which has the potential to be an effective prevention and therapeutic target for PM_(2.5)-induced COPD.

Spatial Differentiation and Convergence Trend of High-quality Development Level of China’s Tourism Economy

This paper aims to interpret the connotation of high-quality development of tourism economy(HQTE)from the perspective of the new development concepts of innovation,coordination,green,openness and sharing,and then to evaluate the spatial differenti-ation of China’s HQTE based on provincial panel data from 2009 to 2018.Specifically,we employ the spatial convergence model to ex-plore the absolute and conditionalβconvergence trends of HQTE in the whole country and the eastern,central and western regions of China.Our empirical results reveal that:1)within the decade,from 2009 to 2018,regions of China with the highest HQTE index is its eastern region followed by the central region and then the western region,but the fastest growing one is the western region of China fol-lowed by the central region and then the eastern region.2)Whether or not the spatial effect is included,there are absolute and condition-alβconvergence in HQTE in the whole country and aforementioned three regions.3)The degree of government attention as well as the level of economic development and location accessibility are the positive driving factors for the convergence of HQTE in the whole country and the three regions.The degree of marketization and human capital have not passed the significance test either in the whole country or in the three regions.The above conclusions could deepen the understanding of the regional imbalance and spatial conver-gence characteristics of HQTE,clarify the primary development objects,and accomplish the goal of China’s HQTE.

Multifunctional nanoparticle-mediated combining therapy for human diseases

Combining existing drug therapy is essential in developing new therapeutic agents in disease prevention and treatment.In preclinical investigations,combined effect of certain known drugs has been well established in treating extensive human diseases.Attributed to synergistic effects by targeting various disease pathways and advantages,such as reduced administration dose,decreased toxicity,and alleviated drug resistance,combinatorial treatment is now being pursued by delivering therapeutic agents to combat major clinical illnesses,such as cancer,atherosclerosis,pulmonary hypertension,myocarditis,rheumatoid arthritis,inflammatory bowel disease,metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.Combinatorial therapy involves combining or co-delivering two or more drugs for treating a specific disease.Nanoparticle(NP)-mediated drug delivery systems,i.e.,liposomal NPs,polymeric NPs and nanocrystals,are of great interest in combinatorial therapy for a wide range of disorders due to targeted drug delivery,extended drug release,and higher drug stability to avoid rapid clearance at infected areas.This review summarizes various targets of diseases,preclinical or clinically approved drug combinations and the development of multifunctional NPs for combining therapy and emphasizes combinatorial therapeutic strategies based on drug delivery for treating severe clinical diseases.Ultimately,we discuss the challenging of developing NP-codelivery and translation and provide potential approaches to address the limitations.This review offers a comprehensive overview for recent cutting-edge and challenging in developing NP-mediated combination therapy for human diseases.

Adhesive Properties between Recycled Concrete Aggregate and Asphalt

The unique surface microscopic morphology (SMM) and chemical composition of RCA would affect its adhesion to asphalt. This research examined the SMM parameters and surface energies of RCA and asphalt utilizing laser microscope system (LMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM)， correspondingly. The pull-off tests were employed to examine the macroscopic adhesive strength between recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and asphalt， and the study examined the impact of SMM and surface energies of the materials on this macroscopic adhesive strength. In the final phase， this study delved into the multi-scale adhesion mechanisms between RCA and asphalt. Findings demonstrate that an increase in grade correspondingly elevates the surface roughness and surface energy of the asphalt. For asphalt containing bee-like structures， the surface energy in other regions surpassed that of the convex part and concave part. With the increase of water-cement ratio of RCA， the SMM roughness increases and the surface energy decreases. The adhesion of RCA to asphalt is the result of both physical and chemical adhesion， about 60% from chemical effect and the remaining about 40% from physical effect.

Self-powered and self-sensing devices based on piezoelectric energy harvesting

Wearable devices,interactive human-machine interface equipment,wireless sensors,and small-scale cleaning devices play crucial roles in biomedical implantation,disease treatment,health monitoring,environmental purification,etc.These devices require a sustainable energy source to work effectively.With the consideration of the global energy crisis and environmental pollution,researchers are exploring new,stable,and environmentally friendly methods to power these low-powered devices.Mechanical energy is one of the most abundant natural energy sources.Converting mechanical energy from the ambient environment or host structures into electrical energy via the direct piezoelectric effect is an efficient energy harvesting technique.This paper reviews the application of advanced piezoelectric materials,and small-scale self-powered and self-sensing piezoelectric devices at the cubic centimeter scale in energy harvesting and health monitoring of human,animal,machinery,roads,bridges,as well as the pollutant degradation of the environment.Some of these devices have the capability to not only harvest mechanical energy but also enable real-time monitoring and analysis of the electrical signals generated by the direct piezoelectric effect,facilitating prompt decision-making and appropriate responses.In addition,potential challenges and future prospects of small-scale self-powered and self-sensing piezoelectric devices are discussed.

Disulfiram: A novel repurposed drug for cancer therapy

Cancer is a major global health issue. Effective therapeutic strategies can prolong patients’ survival and reduce the costs of treatment. Drug repurposing, which identifies new therapeutic uses for approved drugs, is a promising approach with the advantages of reducing research costs, shortening development time, and increasing efficiency and safety. Disulfiram (DSF), a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug used to treat chronic alcoholism, has a great potential as an anticancer drug by targeting diverse human malignancies. Several studies show the antitumor effects of DSF, particularly the combination of DSF and copper (DSF/Cu), on a wide range of cancers such as glioblastoma (GBM), breast cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and melanoma. In this review, we summarize the antitumor mechanisms of DSF/Cu, including induction of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and various cell death signaling pathways, and inhibition of proteasome activity, as well as inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling. Furthermore, we highlight the ability of DSF/Cu to target cancer stem cells (CSCs), which provides a new approach to prevent tumor recurrence and metastasis. Strikingly, DSF/Cu inhibits several molecular targets associated with drug resistance, and therefore it is becoming a novel option to increase the sensitivity of chemo-resistant and radio-resistant patients. Studies of DSF/Cu may shed light on its improved application to clinical tumor treatment.

β-cells are a type of endocrine cell found in pancreatic islets that synthesize,store and release insulin.In type 1 diabetes(T1D),T-cells of the immune system selectively destroy the insulin-producingβ-cells.Destruction of these cells leads to a lifelong dependence on exogenous insulin administration for survival.Consequently,there is an urgent need to identify novel therapies that stimulateβ-cell growth and induceβ-cell function.We and others have shown that pancreatic ductal progenitor cells are a promising source for regeneratingβ-cells for T1D owing to their inherent differentiation capacity.Default transcriptional suppression is refractory to exocrine reaction and tightly controls the regenerative potential by the EZH2 methyltransferase.In the present study,we show that transient stimulation of exocrine cells,derived from juvenile and adult T1D donors to the FDAapproved EZH2 inhibitors GSK126 and Tazemetostat(Taz)influence a phenotypic shift towards aβ-like cell identity.The transition from repressed to permissive chromatin states are dependent on bivalent H3K27me3 and H3K4me3 chromatin modification.Targeting EZH2 is fundamental toβ-cell regenerative potential.Reprogrammed pancreatic ductal cells exhibit insulin production and secretion in response to a physiological glucose challenge ex vivo.These pre-clinical studies underscore the potential of small molecule inhibitors as novel modulators of ductal progenitor differentiation and a promising new approach for the restoration ofβ-like cell function.

Androgen receptor(AR)is a major transcription factor that plays a role in inflammatory response including interleukin-6(IL6)signaling.1 While AR regulation through paracrine loop signaling in prostate tissue is well-studied,its impact through an IL6 autocrine loop in the lung has not been wellstudied despite the organ's response to respiratory viral infection.Chemical inhibition and RNA knockdown of AR identified a bZIP transcription factor MAF to be a common target of inflammation using these perturbations in lung cells.
