An Analysis of Suicide in the Chinese and English Cultural Contexts in the Early Modern Period

In early modern English and European culture,suicide was both a sin and a *** was condemned both by religion and civil *** corpse of the suicide would be profaned;his/her property would be confiscated,and his/her family would be *** china at the same time,suicide was neither a sin nor a crime;the body of a suicide was never subject to any form of *** the 17th century,the term for“suicide”in English was“selfmurder.”The terms for“suicide”in Chinese convey the manner of death,but never suggest the idea of“murder,”and there are many terms in Chinese that start with“xùn”(meaning“sacrifice one’s life for…”).Although Chinese and English people often had similar reasons for committing suicide(for love,illness,debts and humiliation),there were forms of suicide that were peculiar to Chinese *** included suicide to achieve moral fulfilment;suicide to remonstrate or admonish;and suicide as a way of redressing a *** the early modern period,English people believed that the right of ownership of life resided solely with God;no one had right to take their own *** contrast,the Chinese were primarily concerned with whether someone had caused the suicide and whether it had been committed for a *** conclusion is that in Chinese and English culture,notions of the“self”are different,and the way suicide is understood in Chinese culture is different from the way it is conceived in English *** is in large part due to the differences between Confucianism,Buddhism,and Taoism on the one hand and Christianity on the *** society conceives of suicide in an obligational sense and sanctions certain forms of suicide as righteous;English society focuses on the absence of a right to commit suicide and condemns suicide no matter what its motivation might be.

Settlements are excellent spatiotemporal indicators for studying historical human activities and environmental *** paper discusses the spatial and temporal changes of sites on the Ordos Plateau in china since the Neolithic Age,based on an analysis of spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of the human *** frequency of human settlements on the Ordos Plateau presented a phased fluctuation process,and the sizes were mainly small and *** spatial distribution of human settlements was fractal,and the D value of the aggregation dimension was generally small,indicating that the spatial distribution of the sites was *** by the desert,the sites were mainly distributed in the south and east of the Ordos *** spatiotemporal distribution pattern of human settlements in the Ordos Plateau resulted from the combined action of natural and human factors,especially climate ***,local livelihood patterns significantly affected the frequency of human *** number of human settlements in the farming period was large,and the distribution was *** contrast,the number of sites in the nomadic period was small and *** central government’s policies and the conflicts between farming and nomadic groups further affected the spatiotemporal distribution of human *** study may contribute to a better understanding of historical environmental change and human-land relationships in the Ordos Plateau.

This paper undertook the C and N stable isotopic analysis of human bones unearthed at the Gouwan site in Xichuan,Henan,to reveal the human diets and to explore the lifestyle of humans and the development of rice and millet *** contribution of rice to human diets was almost equal to that of millet in this site though millet agriculture is the traditional economic model for the middle Yellow River *** the other hand,the comparison of C and N stable isotopes in different cultural periods clearly indicates changes in millet and rice *** mainly depended on agriculture and gathering in the Yangshao culture I. Millet agriculture,livestock rearing,and fishing were enhanced in the Yangshao culture *** agriculture and animal husbandry developed steadily in the Yangshao culture *** that the mixed rice and millet agriculture developed *** addition,rice agriculture spread to the north in the climate suitable for cultural exchanges between north and south in the Yangshao culture *** the Qujialing culture period,under a colder climate,the rice farming was not dominant,though the Qujialing culture played a key role in the site.

Development of Fenghuang Dancong Tea and Chestnut Sauce

To produce Fenghuang Dancong tea and chestnut sauce that is more in line with people s health needs and has better flavor,the dosage of tea,tea powder,white sugar and milk was analyzed,and the optimal formula of Fenghuang Dancong tea and chestnut sauce was studied through a single factor experiment and orthogonal *** results showed that the best formula of Fenghuang Dancong tea and chestnut sauce was composed of 4.5 g of tea,1.5 g of tea powder,60 g of milk and 5 g of white *** Fenghuang Dancong tea and chestnut sauce made under these conditions was light brown,and had suitable viscosity,delicate and rich *** had the fragrance of Fenghuang Dancong tea and the sweet aroma of chestnuts.

Institutional Condition,Subject Consciousness and Cultural Symbiosis:Qingshui River Basin Experience on Interactions and Exchanges among Different Ethnic Groups

Based on cases in specific regions,historical anthropology is one kind of vital academic orientation to explore interactions and exchanges among different ethnic groups of different historical periods,so as to gain new knowledge and understanding on the structure of Chinese history and culture as a *** on Qingshui River Basin in southeast Guizhou Province,this paper:1)briefly summarizes the geospatial pattern and new social environment formed by institutional designs and governance practice since the beginning of Qing Dynasty,including the administrative design"prefecture,subprefecture,hall,and county"(fu,zhou,ting,and xian),the military institution tunwei",and the ethnic regional leader“tusi";2)depicts the common economic activity of Qingshui River Basin with the plantation,lumbering and transportation of china fir at its core,which takes shape alongside the development of this region,as well as the sharing of knowledge and interests,and the subject consciousness of that period;and 3)further discusses the identity expression with the nation of subjects from different ethnic groups,which is based on their identification with mainstream cultural value,alongside the creation of local culture,including regional tradition reform and the popularizing of common written *** actual situation and occurrence mechanism of interactions and exchanges among different ethnic groups in Qingshui River Basin since Qing dynasty is the basic pathway to understand the formation process,ethnic integration,and cultural symbiosis of a regional society;and as a shared and common pattern of the harmonious development of economy and social culture in southwest china,it also provides valuable experience for exploring the forming of the"diversity in unity"feature of the Chinese nation as well as the fostering of a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.

Wild aurochs(Bos primigenius)were once widespread across Eurasia and North Africa but became extinct around the 17th century[1].Aurochs are considered the ancestor of modern taurine(*** taurus)and indicine(***)cattle,which were independently domesticated within regions restricted to Southwest Asia and South Asia,respectively[2,3].Extensive gene flow from local aurochs to domestic cattle has been well documented in Southwest Asia,Europe,and Africa[3,4],raising questions about the mechanisms underlying both the domestication and dispersal of early cattle.

The Models of Modern Human Origins:Eastern Perspective

The origin of modern humans is one of the fundamental scientific questions that has been widely debated in the international academic *** the 1980s,the discussion on this issue has formed two opposing camps:the""Out of Africa"hypothesis and the"Multiregional Evolution"*** the continuous accumulation of new materials and rapid technological advancements in the new century,there have been significant adjustments in the debate over the origin models of modern humans,with materials from the East Asia playing an increasingly important *** article reviews the major hypotheses and models regarding the origin of modern humans and the evolution of modern behavior,tracing their sources,history,and *** also provides a comprehensive overview of some of the latest archaeological discoveries and research ***,it discusses the motives and directions for adjusting the models of modern human origins and behavioral evolution,emphasizing the importance of considering a vast amount of archaeological evidence in the discussion of various models and reflecting on the cultural implications of"modernity".The article calls for increased investment in research on the origin of modern humans in china and emphasizes the need to provide a solid Eastern perspective for discussing modern human origin models.
