External organic carbon sources are needed to provide electron donors for the denitrification of wastewater with a low COD/NO_(3)^(-)-N(C/N)ratio,increasing the treatment cost.The economic strategy is to enhance the bioactivity and/or biodiversity of denitrifiers to efficiently utilize organic substances in wastewater.In this study,novel zero-valent iron(ZVI)composite carriers were prepared and implemented in a suspended carrier biofilm reactor to enhance the bioactivity and/or biodiversity of denitrifiers.At the influent C/N ratio of 4(COD was 179.5±5.0 mg/L and TN was 44.2±0.8 mg/L),COD and TN removal efficiencies were 85.1%and 66.4%,respectively,in the reactors filled with 3 wt%ZVI composite carriers.In contrast,COD and TN removal efficiencies were 70.4%and 55.3%,respectively,in the reactor filled with conventional high-density polyethylene(HDPE)biofilm carriers.The biofilm formation on the 3 wt%ZVI composite carriers was optimized due to its higher roughness(surface square roughness increased from 76.0 nm to 93.8 nm)and favorable hydrophilicity(water contact angle dropped to 72.5°±1.4°from 94.3°±3.2°)compared with the HDPE biofilm carriers.In addition,heterotrophic denitrifiers,Thauera and Dechloromonas,were enriched,whereas autotrophic denitrifiers,Raoultella and Thiobacillus,exhibited high relative abundance in the biofilm of ZVI composite carriers.The coexistence of heterotrophic denitrifiers and autotrophic denitrifiers on the surface of ZVI composite carriers provided mixotrophic metabolism of denitrification(including heterotrophic and iron-based autotrophic),thereby ensuring effective denitrification for wastewater with a low C/N ratio without external organic carbon source addition.

We propose a novel sulfide-driven process to recover N_(2)O during the traditional denitrification process.The optimum initial sulfide concentration was 120 mg/L,and the N_(2)O percentage in the gaseous products (N_(2)O+N_(2)) was up to 82.9%.Moreover,sulfide involved in denitrification processes could substitute for organic carbon as an electron donor,e.g.,1g sulfide was equivalent to 0.5-2 g COD when sulfide was oxidized to sulfur and sulfate.The accumulation of N_(2)O was mainly due to the inhibiting effect of sulfide on nitrous oxide reductase (N_(2)OR),which was induced by the supply insufficiency of electrons from cytochrome c (cyt c) to N_(2)OR.When the initial sulfide concentration was 120 mg/L,the N_(2)OR activity was only 36.8%of its original level.According to the results of cyclic voltammetry,circular dichroism spectra and fluorescence spectra,significant changes in the conformations and protein structures of cyt c were caused by sulfide,and cyt c completely lost its electron transport capacity.This study provides a new concept for N_(2)O recovery driven by sulfide in the denitrification process.In addition,the findings regarding the mechanism of the inhibition of N_(2)OR activity have important implications both for reducing emissions of N_(2)O and recovering N_(2)O in the sulfide-driven denitrification process.

Conductive and stable polyphenylene/CNT composite membrane for electrically enhanced membrane fouling mitigation

Nanocarbon-based conductive membranes, especially carbon nanotube (CNT)-based membranes, have tremendous potential for wastewater treatment and water purification because of their excellent water permeability and selectivity, as well as their electrochemically enhanced performance (e.g., improved antifouling ability). However, it remains challenging to prepare CNT membranes with high structural stability and high electrical conductivity. In this study, a highly electroconductive and structurally stable polyphenylene/CNT (PP/CNT) composite membrane was prepared by electropolymerizing biphenyl on a CNT hollow fiber membrane. The PP/CNT membrane showed 3.4 and 5.0 times higher electrical conductivity than pure CNT and poly(vinyl alcohol)/CNT (PVA/CNT) membranes, respectively. The structural stability of the membrane was superior to that of the pure CNT membrane and comparable to that of the PVA/CNT membrane. The membrane fouling was significantly alleviated under an electrical assistance of −2.0 V, with a flux loss of only 11.7% after 5 h filtration of humic acid, which is significantly lower than those of PP/CNT membranes without electro-assistance (56.8%) and commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes (64.1%). Additionally, the rejection of negatively charged pollutants (humic acid and sodium alginate) was improved by the enhanced electrostatic repulsion. After four consecutive filtration-cleaning cycle tests, the flux recovery rate after backwashing reached 97.2%, which was much higher than those of electricity-free PP/CNT membranes (67.0%) and commercial PVDF membranes (61.1%). This study offers insights into the preparation of stable conductive membranes for membrane fouling control in potential water treatment applications.

Characteristics of soil organic carbon andtotal nitrogen storages for differentland-use types in Central Yunnan Plateau

Two-factor analysis of variance and redundancy analysis were used to analyze the characte-ristics of soil organic carbon total nitrogen storage in garden land,forestland,grassland,farmland,and bare land in the Dachunhe watershed of Jinning District,Kunming City,Yunnan Province,China.The effects of the soil organic carbon,total nitrogen stratification ratio,soil physical and chemical factors on the storage characteristics of organic carbon and total nitrogen of different land-use types were analyzed.The results show that the rates of carbon and nitrogen stratification in soil from 0-20 cm and 40-60 cm of the same land-use types differed are statistically significant(P<0.05).The organic carbon and total nitrogen stratification ratio SR1 of garden land soil are 38.5%and 25.3%,respectively,which are higher than SR^(2).The soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stratification ratio SR^(2) of different land-use types are greater than SR1.There are statistically significant differences in the SR^(2) soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stratification ratios(P<0.05).Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen storage of diffe-rent land-use types gradually decrease with increasing soil depth,with the maximum soil organic carbon and total nitrogen storage in the 0-20 cm soil layer.Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen sto-rage at the same soil depth are significantly different(P<0.05).Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen storage in the garden land are greater than those in the other land-use types.Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen storage in 0-20 cm garden land are 4.96 and 3.19 times than those in bare land,respectively;soil organic carbon and total nitrogen storage are explained by 93.66%and 1.53%in redundancy analysis RDA1 and RDA2,respectively.All physicochemical factors except Available Phosphorus and pH are statistically significance with carbon and nitrogen storage(P<0.05).Soil cationic exchange capacity,Available Phosphorus,C/N ratio,and Moisture Content are positively correlated with organic carbon and total

Methanotrophic–heterotrophic communities were selectively enriched from sewage sludge to obtain a mixed culture with high levels of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate（PHB）accumulation capacity from methane.Methane was used as the carbon source,N2as sole nitrogen source,and oxygen and Cu content were varied.Copper proved essential for PHB synthesis.All cultures enriched with Cu could accumulate high content of PHB（43.2%–45.9%）,while only small amounts of PHB were accumulated by cultures enriched without Cu（11.9%–17.5%）.Batch assays revealed that communities grown with Cu and a higher O2content synthesized more PHB,which had a wider optimal CH4：O2range and produced a high PHB content（48.7%）even though in the presence of N2.In all methanotrophic–heterotrophic communities,both methanotrophic and heterotrophic populations showed the ability to accumulate PHB.Although methane was added as the sole carbon source,heterotrophs dominated with abundances between 77.2%and 85.6%.All methanotrophs detected belonged to type II genera,which formed stable communities with heterotrophs of different PHB production capacities.

Nanofiltration(NF)has attracted increasing attention for wastewater treatment and potable water purification.However,the high-efficiency removal of micropollutants by NF membranes is a critical challenge.Owing to the adsorption and subsequent diffusion,some weakly charged or uncharged micropollutants,such as bisphenol A(BPA),can pass through NF membranes,resulting in low removal rates.Herein,an effective strategy is proposed to enhance the BPA removal efficiency of a crosslinked polyaniline/carbon nanotube NF membrane by coupling the membrane with electro-assistance.The membrane exhibited a 31.9%removal rate for 5 mg/L BPA with a permeance of 6.8 L/(m2·h·bar),while the removal rate was significantly improved to 98.1%after applying a voltage of 2.0 V to the membrane.Furthermore,when BPA coexisted with humic acid,the membrane maintained 94%removal of total organic carbon and nearly 100%removal of BPA at 2.0 V over the entire filtration period.Compared to continuous voltage applied to the membrane,an intermittent voltage(2.0 V for 0.5 h with an interval of 3.5 h)could achieve comparable BPA removal efficiency,because of the combined effect of membrane adsorption and subsequent electrochemical oxidation.Density functional theory calculations and BPA oxidation process analyses suggested that BPA was adsorbed by two main interactions:π–πand hydrogen-bond interactions.The adsorbed BPA was further electro-degraded into small organic acids or mineralized to CO_(2) and H2O.This work demonstrates that NF membranes coupled with electro-assistance are feasible for improving the removal of weakly charged or uncharged micropollutants.

Benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BT-UVs) have attracted concems due to their ubiquitous occurrence in the aquatic environment,and their bioaccumulative and toxic properties.However,little is known about their aquatic environmental degradation behavior.In this study,photodegradation of a representative of BT-UVs,2-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl) benzotriazole (UV-P),was investigated under simulated sunlight irradiation.Results show that UV-P photodegrades slower under neutral conditions (neutral form) than under acidic or alkaline conditions (cationic and anionic forms).Indirect photodegradation is a dominant elimination pathway of UV-P in coastal seawaters.Dissolved organic matter (DOM) from seawaters accelerate the photodegradation rates mainly through excited triplet DOM (3DOM*),and the roles of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical are negligible in the matrixes.DOM from seawaters impacted by mariculture exhibits higher steady-state concentration of 3DOM*([3DOM*]) relative to those from pristine seawaters,leading to higher photosensitizing effects on the photodegradation.Halide ions inhibit the DOM-sensitized photodegradation of UV-P by decreasing [3DOM*].Photodegradation half-lives of UV-P are estimated to range from 24.38 to 49.66 hr in field water bodies of the Yellow River estuary.These results are of importance for assessing environmental fate and risk UV-P in coastal water bodies.

La_(1-x)CoO_(3-δ)catalysts with different non-stoichiometry of lanthanum ions were synthesized by using the sol-gel method,and their catalytic performance in toluene combustion was investigated.The results showed that the catalytic activity and stability of A-site nonstoichiometric La_(1-x)CoO_(3-δ)were improved to a certain extent compared with pure LaCoO_(3)perovskite.Among them,the La_(0.9)CoO_(3-δ)catalyst gave the best catalytic performance for toluene oxidation.It achieved 90%toluene conversion at 205℃under the conditions of a WHSV(weight hourly space velocity)of 22,500 mL/(g·hr)and a 500 ppmV-toluene concentration.Various characterization techniques were used to investigate the relationship between the structure of these catalysts and their catalytic performance.It was found that the non-stoichiometric modification of the lanthanum ion at position A in LaCoO_(3)changed the surface element state of the catalyst and increased the oxygen vacancy content,thus,combined with improved reducibility,improving toluene degradation on the catalyst.
