Biomass fermentation provides a potential route toward the ecological disposal for the bauxite residue(BR)with high alkalinity issues.However,how to accelerate the remediation of the alkaline problem with a long-term durability is still a big challenge.Herein,we investigated the acceleration of the decomposition of straw toward organic acid species via a pyrolysis strategy as well as the pH stability during long-term dry-wet aging for the treated BR.The pH of pyrolytic BR at 300℃ is stabilized at around 8.90 after 70 days’dry-wet aging.During the aging,the main Ca-contained alkaline minerals of calcite and cancrinite are dissolved and the content of exchangeable Na+is reduced.This pyrolysis process can decompose straw quickly and produce more organic matters that are easily degraded to fulvic and humic acid as evidenced by 3D fluorescence spectrum analysis.Compared to the fermentation with straw under natural conditions,the alkalinity regulation of BR after pyrolysis is featured with shorter period and lower pH as well as long-term pH stability.Therefore,the synergistic pyrolysis of BR with straw provides an alternative method to address the alkaline issues,which is conducive to promoting the soil formation of BR.

Habitat structure has been considered as an important factor affecting the acoustic evolution of birds,and bird songs are increasingly affected by artificial environmental variation.Invasive plants sometimes can dramatically alter native habitats,but the song variation of native songbirds migrating into invaded habitats has received little attention.The invasion of smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora in the coastal wetlands of eastern China has drastically altered the vegetation structure and some small passerines have begun to use invaded habitats to breed.In this study,we compared the song type prevalence and the song characteristics of male plain prinia Prinia inornata to identify differences in vocal behavior between native and invaded habitats.We also tested for differences in vocal behavior in relation to singing perch and wind speed variation between different habitats.The results indicated that males of plain prinia in invaded habitats sang shorter songs than those in native habitats and had a lower song diversity.The homogeneous vegetation structure and higher wind speed in invaded habitats likely leads to males changing the traditional perched singing style.The song variation may be related to the founder effect,the alteration of vegetation structure and microclimate in invaded habitats.This finding highlights the need for better understanding the behavioral evolution of native species in the process of adapting to the invaded habitat.In the future,experimental manipulation is needed to ascertain how the invasive plant drove these vocal behavior changes of native songbirds.

Coal spontaneous combustion(CSC)is a disaster associated with coal mining that leads to loss of coal resources and envi-ronmental and human health issues.To investigate kinetic characteristics for oxidation of coal,three coal samples were collected from different coal mining areas in the Southern Junggar coalfield.Subsequently,the collected coal samples were ground into different particle sizes and tested using microscopic and macroscopic methods,including thermal gravimetric analysis,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction,and temperature-programmed oxidation.The results obtained are as follows:the sharpest absorption peak(002)indicates that graphitization is high.Furthermore,the results show that the SKS coal sample is prone to spontaneous combustion;the greater the aromatic hydrocarbon content is,the more difficult it is for CSC to occur,while the opposite is true for oxygen-containing functional groups.The SKS data confirmed this conclusion;the rate for generation of CO and CO_(2)controlled the possibility of SKS oxidation at 110℃and provided an indication of the temperature.During the dehydration stage,the WD sample had the lowest activation energy,indicating that it was most susceptible to spontaneous combustion.During the combustion stage,the lowest activation energy was found for the SKS sample with particle sizes<0.075 mm,indicating that particle size was one of the factors affecting spontane-ous combustion.The activation energy for dehydration was significantly lower than that for combustion,which showed that the coal oxygen reaction was more likely to occur in the dehydration stage.Based on DSC curves,the SKS sample had the largest exothermicity,indicating that it would ignite more readily.

As typical metalloid toxic elements widely distributed in environmental media,the geochemical behaviour of antimony(Sb)and arsenic(As)affects environmental safety.We selected the surface waters and sediments at the river-lake junction of Dongting Lake as the research objects,analysed the concentration and chemical partitioning of Sb and As,assessed its contamination and ecological risk levels,and discussed its sources and potential influencing factors.The concentrations of dissolved Sb and As in surface waters were low(environmental behaviour of metalloids in specific hydrological conditions,such as river-lake junctions.

Mining,smelting and tailing deposition activities can cause metal(loid)contamination in surrounding soils,threatening ecosystems and human health.Microbial indicators are sensitive to environmental factors and have a crucial role in soil ecological risk assessment.Xikuangshan,the largest active antimony(Sb)mine in the world,was taken as the research area.The soil properties,metal(loid)contents and microbial characteristics were investigated and their internal response relationships were explored by multivariate statistical analysis.The assessment of the single pollution index and Nemerow synthetic pollution index(PN)showed that the soils were mainly polluted by Sb,followed by Cd and As,in which sampling site S1 had a slight metal(loid)pollution and the other sampling sites suffered from severe synthetic metal(loid)pollution.The microbial characteristics were dissimilar among sampling points at different locations from the mining area according to hierarchical cluster analysis.The correlation analysis indicated that fluorescein diacetate hydrolase,acid phosphatase,soil basal respiration andmicrobial biomass carbonwere negatively correlatedwith PN,indicating their sensitivity to combined metal(loid)contamination;that dehydrogenase was positively correlated with pH;and that urease,potential ammonia oxidation and abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea were correlated with N(nitrogen)contents.However,β-glucosidase activity had no significant correlations with physicochemical properties and metal(loid)contents.Principal components analysis suggested bioavailable Sb and pH were the dominant factors of soil environment in Xikuangshan Sb mining area.Our results can provide a theoretical basis for ecological risk assessment of contaminated soil.

The Aral Sea Basin in Central Asia is an important geographical environment unit in the center of Eurasia.It is of great significance to the ecological protection and sustainable development of Central Asia to carry out dynamic monitoring and effective evaluation of the eco-environmental quality of the Aral Sea Basin.In this study,the arid remote sensing ecological index(ARSEI)for large-scale arid areas was developed,which coupled the information of the greenness index,the salinity index,the humidity index,the heat index,and the land degradation index of arid areas.The ARSEI was used to monitor and evaluate the eco-environmental quality of the Aral Sea Basin from 2000 to 2019.The results show that the greenness index,the humidity index and the land degradation index had a positive impact on the quality of the ecological environment in the Aral Sea Basin,while the salinity index and the heat index exerted a negative impact on the quality of the ecological environment.The eco-environmental quality of the Aral Sea Basin demonstrated a trend of initial improvement,followed by deterioration,and finally further improvement.The spatial variation of these changes was significant.From 2000 to 2019,grassland and wasteland(saline alkali land and sandy land)in the central and western parts of the basin had the worst ecological environment quality.The areas with poor ecological environment quality are mainly distributed in rivers,wetlands,and cultivated land around lakes.During the period from 2000 to 2019,except for the surrounding areas of the Aral Sea,the ecological environment quality in other areas of the Aral Sea Basin has been improved in general.The correlation coefficients between the change in the eco-environmental quality and the heat index and between the change in the eco-environmental quality and the humidity index were–0.593 and 0.524,respectively.Climate conditions and human activities have led to different combinations of heat and humidity changes in the eco-environmental quality of the Aral Sea Basin.However

Phosphorus(P)is involved in various biochemical reactions in plant growth,so it is beneficial to plants growing in soils contaminated by metals,including cadmium(Cd).However,few studies have reported on the mechanistic roles of P in mitigating Cd toxicity to ryegrass root,and especially in alleviating the disruption of the mitochondrial function of living cells.In this study,the physiological and biochemical mechanisms associated with ryegrass growth under various Cd and P treatments were investigated using leaching and pot systems.The concentration of Cd in soil leachates showed a significantly positive relationship with redox potential(P<0.05),but negative relationship(P<0.05)with leachate pH values and dissolved organic carbon(DOC),indicating that exogenous P addition(as H_(2)PO_(4)*)may decrease Cd leaching from contaminated soil.Compared to the control(without P addition),the cumulative Cd content was reduced by 53.3%and 64.5%in the soil leachate with exogenous P application(20 mg/L and 80 mg/L),respectively.Notably,application of P decreased the Cd concentrations in the symplastic fractions and increased the Cd concentrations in the apoplastic fractions in root tips,which may help to alleviate Cd stress to the protoplast.Moreover,exogenous P was found to play a positive role in mitochondrial function and Ca^(2+)variation in root cells under Cd stress,which provides novel insights into the mechanisms of exogenous P in alleviating plant Cd injury.

Efficient and robust photocatalysts for environmental pollutants removal with outstanding stability have great significance.Herein,we report a kind of three dimensional(3D)photocatalyst presented as Z-scheme heterojunction,which combining TiO_(2) and ZnxCd1-xS with graphene aerogel to contrast TiO2-ZnxCd1-xS graphene aerogel(TSGA,x=0.5)through a moderate hydrothermal process.The as-prepared Z-scheme TSGA was used to remove aqueous Cr(VI)via a synergistic effect of adsorption and visible light photocatalysis.The adsorption equilibrium can be reached about 40 min,then after about 30 min irradiation under visible light(wavelength(λ)>420 nm)the removal rate of Cr(VI)almost reached 100%,which is much better than the performance of pristine TiO_(2) and Zn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S,as well as TiO2 graphene aerogel(TGA)and Zn0.5Cd0.5S graphene aerogel(SGA).The virulent Cr(VI)was reduced to Cr(III)with hypotoxicity after photocatalysis on TSGA,meanwhile the as-synthesized TSGA presented a good stability and reusability.The reduced graphene oxide(rGO)sheets between TiO_(2) and Zn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S played a role as charge transfer mediator,promoting the photoinduced electrons transfer and photocatalysis ability of TSGA was enhanced significantly.Hence,such photocatalyst exhibits a potential application on removing heavy metals with high efficiency and stability from polluted aqueous environment.

Vehicle emissions of primary air pollutants from 2009 to 2019 and projection for the 14th Five-Year Plan period in Beijing, China

Over the past decade,the emission standards and fuel standards in Beijing have been upgraded twice,and the vehicle structure has been improved by accelerating the elimination of 2.95 million old vehicles.Through the formulation and implementation of these policies,the emissions of carbon monoxide(CO),volatile organic compounds(VOCs),nitrogen oxides(NO_(x)),and fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5))in 2019 were 147.9,25.3,43.4,and 0.91 kton in Beijing,respectively.The emission factor method was adopted to better understand the emissions characteristics of primary air pollutants from combustion engine vehicles and to improve pollution control.In combination with the air quality improvement goals and the status of social and economic development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period in Beijing,different vehicle pollution control scenarios were established,and emissions reductions were projected.The results show that the emissions of four air pollutants(CO,VOCs,NO_(x),and PM_(2.5))fromvehicles in Beijing decreased by an average of 68% in 2019,compared to their levels in 2009.The contribution of NOx emissions from diesel vehicles increased from 35% in 2009 to 56% in 2019,which indicated that clean and energy-saving diesel vehicle fleets should be further improved.Electric vehicle adoption could be an important measure to reduce pollutant emissions.With the further upgrading of vehicle structure and the adoption of electric vehicles,it is expected that the total emissions of the four vehicle pollutants can be reduced by 20%-41% by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

In recent years,with the emergence of new pollutants,the effective treatment of wastewater has become very important.Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes have been successfully applied to the treatment of wastewater,such as wastewater containing antibiotics,pharmaceuticals and personal care products,dyes,endocrine-disrupting chemicals,chlorinated organic pollutants,and phenolics,for the degradation of refractory organic contaminants.This paper summarizes the production of sulfate radicals,which can be generated by the activation of persulfate via conventional and emerging approaches.The existing problems of persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes were analyzed in detail,including residual sulfates,coexisting factors(coexisting inorganic anions and natural organic matter),and energy consumption.This paper proposes corresponding possible solutions to the problems mentioned above,and this paper could provide a reference for the application of persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes in actual wastewater treatment.
