The nanoscale zinc oxide(n-ZnO)was used in food packages due to its superior antibac terial activity,resulting in potential intake of n-ZnO through the digestive system,wherein n-ZnO interacted with *** recent,facet engineering,a technique for controlling the exposed facets,was applied to n-ZnO,whereas risk of n-ZnO with specific exposed facets in saliva was *** nanoflakes(ZnO-0001)and nanoneedles(ZnO-1010)with the pri mary exposed facets of{0001}and{1010}respectively were prepared in this study,investigat ing stability and toxicity of ZnO-0001 and ZnO-1010 in synthetic *** ZnO-0001 and ZnO-1010 partially transformed into amorphous Zn_(3)(PO_(4))_(2)within 1 hr in the saliva even containing orgnaic components,forming a ZnO-Zn_(3)(PO_(4))_(2)core-shell *** less,ZnO-1010 relative to ZnO-0001 would likely transform into Zn_(3)(PO_(4))_(2),being attributed to superior dissolution of{1010}facet due to its lower vacancy formation energy(1.15 eV than{0001}facet(3.90 eV)).The toxicity of n-ZnO to Caco-2 cells was also dependent on the primary exposed facet;ZnO-0001 caused cell toxicity through oxidative stress,whereas ZnO-1010 resulted in lower cells viability than ZnO-0001 through oxidative stress and mem brane *** functional theory calculations illustrated that·O_(2)^(-)was formed and released on{1010}facet,yet O_(2)^(2-)instead of·O_(2)^(-)was generated on{0001}facet,leading to low oxidative stress from *** findings demonstrated that stability and toxicity of n-ZnO were dependent on the primary exposed facet,improving our understanding o health risk of nanomaterials.

Background： American ginseng（Panax quinquefolius L.） and Chinese jujube（Zizyphus jujuba Mill.） are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to enhance immune function. Objective： The present study aimed to develop one Chinese prescription, Shenzao Cha（SZC）, consisting of American ginseng and Chinese jujube, and systematically investigate its immunomodulation in healthy ICR mice. Methods： Normal ICR mice received intragastric administration of SZC（1.3, 2.6, and 5.2 g raw material/kg body weight） once daily for four weeks, while a control group received the same amount of sterile water. Results： SZC significantly increased the spleen and thymus indices and T-lymphocyte proliferation, while the T-lymphocyte proliferation in the 5.2 g/kg group was 1.4-fold higher than that in the control. Further, 1.3 g/kg SZC could markedly improve hemolytic activity by 25.2%, and 2.6 g/kg SZC increased the NK cell activity by 78.6% relative to the control. In addition, the activities of antioxidant enzymes（superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase）, that participated in modulating oxidative stress, were significantly increased in the liver, spleen, thymus, and serum, while the contents of malondialdehyde were dramatically decreased. Conclusions： SZC exhibited potent immunomodulatory effects on innate and adaptive immunity in healthy ICR mice, as well as potential antioxidant activity for prevention of oxidative stress, which was suggested to partly contribute to the immune enhancement.

Drinking water disinfection is an essential process to assure public health all over the *** this study,silver nanoparticles(AgNPs)on UiO-66(Zr)Metal-Organic Frameworks(Ag@UiO-66)is proposed as a potential water disinfection *** are synthesized using polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP)as stabilizing agent,and sodium borohydride as reducing agent are subsequently embedded on UiO-66,a high-stability organometallic *** effect of premixing time,reaction time and reactant concentration on the loading rate of AgNPs on UiO-66 was *** maximum load rate of AgNPs on UiO-66 could reach 13%when the premixing time is 3 h,the reaction time is 45 min and the concentration of AgNO_(3) is10μg/*** formation of AgNPs loaded on UiO-66 was observed and confirmed with ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry(UV-Vis),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),infrared emission spectroscopy(IES)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)***@UiO-66 exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both Gramnegative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus,with minimum inhibitory concentrations(MIC)of 64 and 128μg/mL,*** germicidal efficacy of Ag@UiO-66 enhanced significantly as the temperature rose from 4℃to 37℃.The results indicate that Ag@UiO-66 is potential candidate as a feasible water disinfection material.

The effect of hot air（HA, 45°C, 3.5 h） treatment on reducing gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea in strawberry fruit and the possible mechanisms were investigated. The results showed that HA treatment significantly reduced lesion diameter and enhanced activities of chitinase（CHI）, β-1,3-glucanase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase（PAL） in strawberry fruit. Total phenolic contents were also increased by HA treatment. The activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase（SOD）, catalase（CAT） and ascorbate peroxidase（APX） were higher in HA treated strawberry fruit than those in control. Expression of three defense related genes such as CAT, CCR-1 allele and PLA6 was greatly induced in HA treated strawberry fruit with or without inoculation by B. cinerea. In addition, the in vitro experiment showed that HA treatment inhibited spore germination and tube growth of B. cinerea. These results suggested that HA treatment directly activated disease resistance against B. cinerea in strawberry fruit without priming response and directly inhibiting growth of B. cinerea.

Quantitative and qualitative measurement of pear firmness based on near infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics

Firmness is one of the most important characteristics to estimate fruit maturity and *** potential of near-infrared(NIR)diffuse reflectance spectroscopy as a nondestructive way for pear firmness evaluation of three varieties(‘Cuiguan’,‘Xueqing’and‘Xizilv’)was studied,both quantitatively and *** models were established using partial least square(PLS)methods in the spectral range of 800 to 2500 *** quantitative analysis,the correlation coefficient r increased with more varieties involved in the *** results were obtained in the model for all three varieties:rcalwas 0.934,root mean square error of calibration(RMSEC)and root mean square error of prediction(RMSEP)were 2.06 N and 3.14 N,*** qualitative analysis,the overall accuracies of discriminant PLS models for classifying pears into three firmness levels:low,medium and high firmness level were not so good,percentage of samples correctly classified ranged from 70.63%to 81.25%for calibration and from 56.25%to 74.38%for *** results indicate that NIR spectroscopy together with PLS chemometrics method is feasible for quantitative analysis of pear firmness,however,the classification accuracy is too low to put into practical application.

Blood spots are one of undesired inclusions in eggs,whose detection success is highly dependent on shell *** research reports a method for detecting blood spots in light brown-shelled eggs on the basis of hyperspectral transmittance *** normalized spectra of intact eggs and their shells were *** feature wavelengths of intact eggs selected by the successive projections algorithm and 3 absorption peak locations of eggshells were regarded as characteristic *** k-nearest neighbor(kNN)and support vector machine(SVM)algorithms were adopted to develop detection *** latter achieved better *** overall classification accuracy increased to 100% by merging normalized spectra of intact eggs at 5 feature wavelengths with 3 absorption peaks of eggshells as input variables of SVM-based ***,a practical SVM-based model with 96.43% overall classification accuracy was established by replacing inputs with normalized spectra of intact eggs at characteristic bands.

A novel carbon composite electrode modified with bismuth oxide nanoparticles and the ionic liquid n-octylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate was fabricated and used to simultaneously determine cadmium and lead levels using square wave anodic stripping *** electrode combines the unique advantages of nanomaterials and ionic liquid with the low cost and easy fabrication of the carbon composite *** with the traditional binder based composite electrode,our electrode exhibited well-defined and separate stripping voltammetric peaks for cadmium and ***,the antifouling capacity of the bismuth film electrode was significantly improved by the ionic *** optimized conditions,the linear range of the composite electrode was from 3.0 to 30.0 μg L-1 for both metal ions with a detection limit of 0.15 μg L-1 for cadmium and 0.21 μg L-1 for *** milk sample analyses showed that the modified electrode was sensitive,reliable and effective for the determination of trace heavy metals,holding great promise for routine analysis applications.
