Effect of potassium permanganate dosing position on the performance of coagulation/ultrafiltration combined process

The effects of potassium permanganate(KMnO_4)dosing position on the natural organic matter(NOM)removal as well as membrane fouling were investigated in the coagulation/ultrafiltration combined ***_4 oxidation altered the NOM characteristics in terms of hydrophobicity and molecular weight,and destroyed humic substances originated from terraneous organisms in raw *** optimal KMnO_4 dosage was 0.5 mg·L^(-1) in the peroxidation enhanced coagulation process with respect to the dissolved organic carbon(DOC)*** KMnO_4 was dosed into both upstream and downstream of coagulation,namely in the proposed twoposition dosing mode,coagulation and KMnO_4 oxidation worked individually on the apparent DOC ***,compared to the KMnO_4 addition prior to or after coagulation,the two-position dosing mode dramatically alleviated membrane fouling and reduced fouling *** was attributed to the change of NOM characteristics as a result of KMnO_4 addition prior to coagulation and the presence of MnO_2 on membrane surface as a result of KMnO_4 addition prior to *** work may provide useful information for the application of KMnO_4 oxidation in the coagulation/ultrafiltration combined system.

Aims Dead plant material(***)is the major source of soil organic matter and thus plays a fundamental role in regulating soil carbon cycling in global forest *** storage of litter is jointly determined by its production from plants and decomposition in a given ***,only few studies have explored the relative importance of en-vironmental(***)and plant(***)factors in driving the spa-tial variation of litter *** objective of this study is to quantify the relative contributions of biotic and abiotic factors in affecting the spatial variation of aboveground litter stock in a mature subtropical *** The aboveground litter mass was sampled in 187 grids of a 20-hm forest dynamics plot in a subtropical broad-leave forest in eastern *** contributions of environmental variables,topographical and species variables on litter stocks were quantified by the boosted regression tree *** Findings The mean aboveground litter stock was 367.5 g m^(−2) in the Tiantong dynamics forest plot across all the 187 *** litter stock ranged from 109.2 to 831.3 g m^(−2) and showed a large spatial variation with the coefficient of variance as 40.8%.The boosted regression tree analysis showed that slope elevation and soil moisture were the most influential variables on the spatial variation of litter *** relatively influence of abiotic factors(environmental and topographical factors)was 71.4%,which is larger than biotic factors(28.6%).Overall,these findings sug-gest that abiotic factors play a more important role than plants in driving the spatial variation of aboveground litter stock in the subtropical *** that the global carbon-cycle models have been aiming to refine from the hundred kilometers to sub-kilometer scale,this study highlights the urgency of a better understanding of the spatial variation of litter stock on the fine scale.

Objective: Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an inflammatory enzyme that is mainly released by activated neutrophils and monocytes. 3-nitrotyrosine (NT) is a stable inflammatory end product of MPO that is produced through nitrosylation of free and protein-bound tyrosines. Determination of the exact levels of free NT is technically a challenging matter. Also, there is limited information about the relationship between MPO and free NT levels and elevation of them in the plasma of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Therefore, we sought to determine the exact level of plasma free NT with a simple and exquisite technique in CAD patients. Methods: This study included 50 stable angina, 50 unstable angina patients, and 50 control subjects. Plasma MPO concentration was measured with an immunoassay method. Plasma free NT level was determined by a modified HPLC-fluorescence method. Lipid profile, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and other clinical risk factors of patients were also assigned. Results: Plasma level of free NT was efficiently measured by the HPLC-fluorescence method. Plasma levels of MPO and NT were significantly higher in patients with stable and unstable CAD than in control subjects (P < 0.001). There was a significant correlation between the two substances in CAD patients (P < 0.001). Conclusions: We determined plasma free NT levels with a sensitive HPLC-fluorescence method with some modifications in a clinical scale. Plasma levels of MPO and NT were profoundly elevated in CAD patients. The significant relationships of the two substances and elevation of them may have useful clinical implication in patients with stable and unstable CAD.

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion leads to white matter injury(WMI),which subsequently causes neurodegeneration and even cognitive ***,due to the lack of treatment specifically for WMI,novel recognized and effective therapeutic strategies are urgently *** this study,we found that honokiol and magnolol,two compounds derived from Magnolia officinalis,significantly facilitated the differentiation of primary oligodendrocyte precursor cells(OPCs)into mature oligodendrocytes,with a more prominent effect of the former ***,our results demonstrated that honokiol treatment improved myelin injury,induced mature oligodendrocyte protein expression,attenuated cognitive decline,promoted oligodendrocyte regeneration,and inhibited astrocytic activation in the bilateral carotid artery stenosis ***,honokiol increased the phosphorylation of serine/threonine kinase(Akt)and mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)by activating cannabinoid receptor 1 during OPC ***,our study indicates that honokiol might serve as a potential treatment for WMI in chronic cerebral ischemia.

This article focuses on children’s participation in disaster risk *** draws on a 2018 study done in New Zealand with 33 school children who conducted participatory mapping with LEGO and the video game Minecraft to assess disaster risk in their locality and identify ways to be more *** research involved participatory activities with the children actively involved in the co-design,implementation,and evaluation of the initiative.A focus group discussion was also conducted to assess the project from the viewpoint of the *** results indicate that LEGO and Minecraft are playful tools for children to participate in disaster risk *** research identifies four key elements of genuine children’s participation,including the Participants,Play,the Process,and Power(4 Ps).This framework emphasizes that fostering children’s participation in disaster risk reduction requires focusing on the process through which children gain power to influence decisions that matter to *** process,through play,is child-centered and fosters *** article concludes that Play is essential to ground participation within children’s worldviews and their networks of friends and relatives.

Origami has become an optimal methodological choice for creating complex three-dimensional(3D)structures and soft *** simple and low-cost origami-inspired folding assembly provides a new method for developing 3D soft robots,which is ideal for future intelligent robotic ***,we present a series of materials,structural designs,and fabrication methods for developing independent,electrically controlled origami 3D soft robots for walking and soft *** 3D soft robots are based on soft actuators,which are multilayer structures with a dielectric elastomer(DE)film as the deformation layer and a laser-cut PET film as the supporting flexible *** triangular and rectangular design of the soft actuators allows them to be easily assembled into crawling soft robots and pyramidal-and square-shaped 3D *** crawling robot exhibits very stable crawling behaviors and can carry loads while *** by origami folding,the pyramidal and square-shaped 3D soft robots exhibit programmable out-of-plane deformations and easy switching between two-dimensional(2D)and 3D *** electrically controllable origami deformation allows the 3D soft robots to be used as soft manipulators for grasping and precisely locking 3D *** work proves that origami-inspired fold-based assembly of DE actuators is a good reference for the development of soft actuators and future intelligent multifunctional soft robots.

Particle swarm optimization(PSO)is a stochastic computation tech-nique that has become an increasingly important branch of swarm intelligence ***,like other evolutionary algorithms,PSO also suffers from premature convergence and entrapment into local optima in dealing with complex multimodal *** this paper puts forward an adaptive multi-updating strategy based particle swarm optimization(abbreviated as AMS-PSO).To start with,the chaotic sequence is employed to generate high-quality initial particles to accelerate the convergence rate of the ***,according to the current iteration,different update schemes are used to regulate the particle search process at different evolution *** be specific,two different sets of velocity update strategies are utilized to enhance the exploration ability in the early evolution stage while the other two sets of velocity update schemes are applied to improve the exploitation capability in the later evolution *** by the unequal weightage of acceleration coefficients is used to guide the search for the global worst particle to enhance the swarm *** addition,an auxiliary update strategy is exclusively leveraged to the global best particle for the purpose of ensuring the convergence of the PSO ***,extensive experiments on two sets of well-known benchmark functions bear out that AMS-PSO outperforms several state-of-the-art PSOs in terms of solution accuracy and convergence rate.

Chinese energy industries are facing serious problems such as excess capacity,homogeneous product,and soft budget *** paper provides a duopoly model to investigate the influence of heterogeneity and soft budget constraint on production capacity decision and internal action mechanism,respectively,under Cournot and Bertrand competitions,which reveals the formation mechanism of excess *** conclude that excess capacity would exist when the products are not wholly heterogeneous under Cournot competition,and the higher level of the soft budget constraint or the more homogeneous the products are,the worse the excess capacity will *** insufficient capacity would exist provided that products are not wholly heterogeneous under Bertrand competition,and the higher level of soft budget constraint or the more homogeneous the products are,the more insufficient capacity will *** soft budget constraint and product heterogeneity mutually affect to decision-making of capacity and output.
