Is It Workplace Stress a Trigger for Alcohol and Drug Abuse?

Those workers most vulnerable to pressure tend to suffer from scarce social and personal resources with which to respond adaptively to stress. In this case, the effects of psychoactive substances may exceed the stressed worker’s positive expectations. Thus, the aim is to analyze the scientific evidence on the relationship between drug abuse and workplace stress, based on an integrative review of the literature. Data were collected in February 2016 from the databases of the Virtual health Library and PubMed. The final sample of 16 articles was divided into two categories: alcohol and drugs abuse in professions with high degree of psychosocial hazards and risks, and alcohol and drugs abuse for workplace stress in other professions. A relationship between precarious conditions, the nature of the work and its influence on drug abuse could be seen. However, other variables may strengthen psychoactive drug use as a coping strategy for stress.

Patients’ Perspectives on Pre-Operative Education for Total Hip Replacement

The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore subjective experiences related to pre-operative patient education experience with total hip replacement (THR). Semi-structured, in depth interviews were used to collect data. Eleven participants aged 44 to 76 were recruited. Data were analyzed using a constant comparative method. Three categories emerged from interview data. 1) Obedience professions’ knowledge: trust professions’ authority, synchronization with instruction and satisfy information;2) Worries restrict mobility and lose job: post-op activities changes and impact on daily work;3) Information wanted by personal preference: motivation differently. Hopefully insights on pre-operative education to THR patients experience will provide valuable references for application in teaching materials for orthotics’ nurse to improve THR care.

International health Professional Migration and Brain Waste: A Situation of Double-Jeopardy

The migration of health professionals from low- and middle-income to high-income countries has received much attention amongst the global health community as an important factor influencing health care systems. There is however, much less dialogue about internationally trained health professionals who are not able to practice their professions in their countries of destination, a phenomenon labelled as “brain waste”. It has been shown that the integration of internationally trained health professionals in their country of destination is hindered due to inadequate language skills, a lack of local work experience, cultural incompetency, and barriers to the recognition of credentials from foreign academics and professionals. To maximize gains from migration of health professionals and to minimize the negative impacts, we need policies with proper guidelines for practical strategies to better integrate health professional immigrants into the workforce of destination countries. These policies and action plans should also foster healthcare system capacity building and appropriate compensation in low- and middle-income

At the beginning of this New Year of 2013, we are very pleased to present the English edition of the Journal of Integrative Medicine （JIM）, a PubMed-indexed, peer-reviewed, open-access journal on integrative medicine. The JIM is a continuation of the former Chinese-language journal, the Journal of Chinese Integrative Medicine （JCIM）, established in 2003 and published in Shanghai. Integrative medicine, grounded in patient-centered, evidence-based practice, incorporates the broad spectrum of complementary and alternative medicine （CAM） and includes acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, nutrition, chiropractic, mind-body medicine, taichi, qigong, and meditation, among other professions. In the past two decades, CAM has become one of the fastest growing branches of health care. CAM now commands attention worldwide and is rapidly being integrated into conventional medicine. China is the country in the world that has great number of scientists doing clinical and research work on integrative medicine. With this new, English-language publication, we are committed to make JIM an international platform for high-quality CAM papers and an open forum in which the different professions and international scholarly communities can exchange views, share research and their clinical experience, discuss CAM education, and confer about issues and problems in our various disciplines and in CAM as a whole in order to promote integrative medicine.

Role of Rehabilitation Counseling and Psychology in Working with Individuals with Work-related Chronic Pain Injuries: An Interdisciplinary Approach-Chronic Pain and Work Injuries in the United States

This paper addresses the topic of an interdisciplinary approach of chronic pain management from a biopsychosocial perspective. The first section provides an introduction to the definitions and theories of chronic pain and the various contributing factors (psychological, interpersonal/environmental and social support, and vocational). The second section presents the role of various health care professions (medical doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and rehabilitation counselors) and the evidence of their treatment effectiveness. The third section discusses the concept of an interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation program (IPRP) and its evidence to support its effectiveness. Finally, the clinical implications of rehabilitation counseling and psychology as part of the inter-disciplinary program in treating individuals with chronic pain will be highlighted.

Clinical Practice Guideline on Acupuncture and Moxibustion:Allergic Rhinitis was revised and released by the Standards Working Committee of World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies(WFAS)on October 9,*** is the first clinical practice guideline(CPG)on acupuncture and moxibustion for allergic rhinitis approved by an international academic organization,which provides evidence-based recommendations and the practical therapeutic protocols for acupuncture practitioners *** CPG was developed by following Grades of Recommendation,Assessment,Development,and Evaluation(GRADE)methodology,and the principles of the World health Organization Handbook for Guideline *** members in the guideline development group(GDG)were from different countries,with different professions,and they played a critical role in the development of clinical questions,recommendations,and therapeutic *** are the core of a CPG and the direct answers to clinical questions,due to which this article focuses on the recommendations of this *** recommendations were developed by using the modified Delphi method and the GRADE grid rules,based on the updated systematic reviews of clinical evidence.A total of 15 recommendations for 15 clinical questions were developed in this CPG,including one strong recommendation for intervention based on high-quality evidence,three conditional recommendations for either the intervention or the comparison based on very low quality of evidence,and 11 conditional recommendations for the intervention based on very low quality of evidence.

青少年心中的科学家形象是科学传播的重要组成部分,科学家形象的好坏,影响青少年未来是否将科学相关职业作为就业方向。科学家形象已经引起了国内外研究者的重视,但总体来说缺乏对不同国家青少年的对比分析。本文在问卷调查的基础上,对中美两国中学生心中的科学家形象进行了比较研究,发现中美学生对科学家仍然存在刻板印象。美国中学生愿意成为科学家是因为科学家能出名、过上好生活;中国中学生愿意成为科学家是由于父母的期望及周围人的态度。美国中学生眼中科学家只是职业的一种,想成为科学家是出于个人兴趣;而中国学生的职业选择被父母左右,科学家在父母眼中属于至高无上的职业,所以孩子才会选择科学。改变这一现状需要大众媒体的客观报道,父母、教师的正确引导,才能使青少年全面、正确地了解科学家和他们所从事的工作,面对科学事业可以做出更为理智的选择。

Biophotonics is an emerging multidisciplinary research area, embracing all light-based technologies applied to the life sciences and medicine [1-6]. The expression itself is the combination of the Greek syllables ＂bios＂ standing for life and ＂phos＂ standing for light. Photonics is the technical term for all methodologies and technologies utilizing photons over the whole spectrum from X-ray over the ultraviolet, visible and the infrared to the terahertz region, and its interaction with any matter. Beyond this definition, biophotonics is a scientific discipline of remarkable societal importance. As a part of photonics, it has proved to be an important enabling technology for accelerated progress in medicine and biotechnology. It can do so, because it originated at the interface of the most innovative academic disciplines of the last century, i.e., photonics, biotechnology and nanotechnologies. This field of research brings together scientists from different professions, such as physicists, biologists, pharmacists, medical doctors, etc. To work on common projects, they need to understand the ideas and the techniques of their counterparts.
