A Novel All-Optical Sensor Design Based on a Tunable Resonant Nanocavity in Photonic Crystal Microstructure Applicable in MEMS Accelerometers

In view of the large scientific and technical interest in the microelectromechanical system(MEMS)accelerometer sensor and the limitations of capacitive,resistive piezo,and piezoelectric methods,we focus on the measurement of the seismic mass displacement using a novel design of the all-optical sensor(AOS).The proposed AOS consists of two waveguides and a ring resonator in a two-dimensional rod-based photonic crystal(PhC)microstructure,and a holder which connects the central rod of a nanocavity to a proof *** photonic band structure of the AOS is calculated with the plane-wave expansion approach for TE and TM polarization modes,and the light wave propagation inside the sensor is analyzed by solving MaxwelFs equations using the finite-difference time-domain *** results of our simulations demonstrate that the fundamental PhC has a free spectral range of about 730 nm covering the optical communication *** also show that the AOS has the resonant peak of 0.8 at 1.644μm,quality factor of 3288,full width at half maximum of 0.5nm,and figure of merit of ***,for the maximum 200nm nanocavity displacements in the x-or y-direction,the resonant wavelengths shift to 1.618μm and 1.547μm,*** also calculate all characteristics of the nanocavity displacement in positive and negative directions of the jc-axis and *** small area of 104.35μm^(2)and short propagation time of the AOS make it an interesting sensor for various applications,especially in the vehicle navigation systems and aviation safety tools.

The ef fects of salinity on the copepod, A cartia tonsa in terms of daily egg production rate(EPR), hatching success, fecal pellet production rate(FPR), naupliar development time and survival, sex ratio, and total life span were determined in laboratory conditions through three experiments. In experiment 1, EPR, hatching success, and FPR of individual females were monitored at salinities of 13, 20, 35 and 45 during short-periods(seven consecutive days). Results show EPR was aff ected by salinity with the highest outputs recorded at 20 and 35, respectively, which were considerably higher than those at 13 and 45. Mean FPR was also higher in 35 and 20. In experiment 2, the same parameters were evaluated over total life span of females(long-term study). The best EPR and FPR were observed in 35, which was statistically higher than at 13 and 20. In experiment 3, survival rates of early nauplii until adult stage were lowest at a salinity of 13. The development time increased with increasing of salinity. Female percentage clearly decreased with increasing salinity. Higher female percentages(56.7% and 52.2%, respectively) were signifi cantly observed at two salinities of 13 and 20 compared to that at 35(25%). Total longevity of females was not af fected by salinity increment. Based on our results, for mass culture we recommend that a salinity of 35 be adopted due to higher reproductive performances, better feeding, and faster development of A. tonsa.

Road prisms, such as cutslopes, fillslopes and road surfaces, can be important contributors of sediment to streams in forested watersheds. In this study rainfall simulations were carried out on cutslopes, fillslopes, road surfaces and forest grounds in hardwood forests of Lolet and Lat Talar, Iran. Water at intensity of 32.4 mm·h-1 was sprayed from a nozzle onto a square area of 0.48 m2. Runoff was collected by water gauge every 4 min and then runoff and sediment parameters were measured in each plot. Results indicated that on road surfaces, the runoff coefficient was 63.28%. On the cutslopes and fillslopes, the runoff coefficients were 35.14% and 10.23%, respectively. On the forest ground as a control, the runoff coefficient was 5.90%. Runoff volume was 2.73 mL·s^-1 on the road surfaces and 1.52 mL·s^-1 on cutslopes. On fillslopes the runoff volume was 0.44 mL·s^-1 and on the forest ground 0.25 mL·s^-1 The greatest rate of soil loss was found on the cutslope （280.79 g·m-2·h-1）. The total soil loss from the cutslopes was two times higher than that from the road surfaces and six times higher than that from the fillslopes. We conclude that cutslopes can be considered the main source of sediments in our study sites, but the function of road surface as a source of runoff generation is more important.

A supervised multimanifold method with locality preserving for face recognition using single sample per person

Although real-world experiences show that preparing one image per person is more convenient, most of the appearance-based face recognition methods degrade or fail to work if there is only a single sample per person(SSPP). In this work, we introduce a novel supervised learning method called supervised locality preserving multimanifold(SLPMM) for face recognition with SSPP. In SLPMM, two graphs: within-manifold graph and between-manifold graph are made to represent the information inside every manifold and the information among different manifolds, respectively. SLPMM simultaneously maximizes the between-manifold scatter and minimizes the within-manifold scatter which leads to discriminant space by adopting locality preserving projection(LPP) concept. Experimental results on two widely used face databases FERET and AR face database are presented to prove the efficacy of the proposed approach.

In recent years, more head and neck cancer patients have been treated with radiotherapy. Radiation-induced mucositis is a common and dose limiting toxicity of radiotherapy among patients with head and neck cancers. Patients undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer are also at increased risk of developing oral candidiasis. A number of new agents applied locally or systemically to prevent or treat radiationinduced mucositis have been investigated, but there is no widely accepted prophylactic or effective treatment for mucositis. Topical Aloe vera is widely used for mild sunburn, frostbites, and scalding burns. Studies have reported the beneficial effects of Aloe gel for wound healing, mucous membrane protection, and treatment of oral ulcers, in addition to antiinflammatory, immunomudulation, antifungal, scavenging free radicals, increasing collagen formation and inhibiting collagenase. Herein the author postulates that oral Aloe vera mouthwash may not only prevent radiation-induced mucositis by its wound healing and antiinflammatory mechanism, but also may reduce oral candidiasis of patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy due to its antifungal and immunomodulatory properties. Hence, Aloe vera mouthwash may provide an alternative agent for treating radiation-induced oral mucositis and candidiasis in patients with head and neck cancers.

Mixed-effects modeling for tree height prediction models of Oriental beech in the Hyrcanian forests

Height–diameter relationships are essential elements of forest assessment and modeling *** this work,two linear and eighteen nonlinear height–diameter equations were evaluated to find a local model for Oriental beech（Fagus orientalis Lipsky） in the Hyrcanian Forest in *** predictive performance of these models was first assessed by different evaluation criteria： adjusted R^2（R^2_（adj））,root mean square error（RMSE）,relative RMSE（%RMSE）,bias,and relative bias（%bias） *** best model was selected for use as the base mixed-effects *** parameters for test plots were estimated with different tree selection *** show that the Chapman–Richards model had better predictive ability in terms of adj R^2（0.81）,RMSE（3.7 m）,%RMSE（12.9）,bias（0.8）,%Bias（2.79） than the other ***,the calibration response,based on a selection of four trees from the sample plots,resulted in a reduction percentage for bias and RMSE of about 1.6–2.7%.Our results indicate that the calibrated model produced the most accurate results.

Electrospinning is a useful and efficient technique to produce polymeric nanofibers. Nanofibers of polymers are electrospun by creating an electrically charged jet of polymer solution. Numerical study on non-Newtonian and viscoelastic jets of polymer nanofibers in electrospinning process is presented in this work. In particular, the effect of non-Newtonian rheology on the jet profile during the electrospinning process is examined. The governing equations of the problem are solved numerically using the Keller-Box method. The effects of yield stress and power-law index on the elongation, velocity, stress and total force are presented and discussed in detail. The results show that by increasing the values of yield stress, the fluid elongation is reduced significantly.

Large-scale annual climate indices were used to forecast annual drought conditions in the Maharlu-Bakhtegan watershed,located in Iran,using a neuro-fuzzy *** Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI) was used as a proxy for drought *** the 45 climate indices considered,eight identified as most relevant were the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO),Atlantic Meridional Mode(AMM),the Bivariate ENSO Time series(BEST),the East Central Tropical Pacific Surface Temperature(NINO 3.4),the Central Tropical Pacific Surface Temperature(NINO 4),the North Tropical Atlantic Index(NTA),the Southern Oscillation Index(SOI),and the Tropical Northern Atlantic Index(TNA).These indices accounted for 81% of the variance in the Principal Components Analysis(PCA) *** Atlantic surface temperature(SST:Atlantic) had an inverse relationship with SPI,and the AMM index had the highest *** forecasts of neuro-fuzzy model demonstrate better prediction at a two-year lag compared to a stepwise regression model.

Cu doped ZnO nanocrystalline powder(10 mol%) has been found to be an efficient catalyst for the one‐pot multi‐component synthesis of fully substituted new indeno[1,2‐b]pyridines through a com-bination of 1,3‐indandione, propiophenone or acetophenone derivatives, aromatic aldehydes, and ammonium acetate in ethanol/H2 O at room temperature. The methodology is mild, efficient and high to excellent yielding.
