While the versatile composition of layered double hydroxides(LDHs)allows the introduction of almost any polyvalent cation in their structure,the exchangeable negatively charged ions intercalated between the plates increase their vast range of functionalities.Here we report on the preparation and optical properties of pillared Eu^(3+)-substituted ZnAl LDHs intercalated by aliphatic dicarboxylates:-OOC-(CH_(2))_(n-2)-COO-.The basal distance in these materials is dependent on the size and packing of the intercalated anions.By varying the number(n)of carbon atoms in the aliphatic chain from 2 to 12,the interlayer gallery of these ZnAlEu LDHs is considerably expanded from 0.9 to 2.1 nm.In the interlayer gallery,the aliphatic dicarboxylates form a monolayer,with the aliphatic chain inclined by an angleα≈63°with the hydroxide layers.The carbon atom in the COO-group is 0.43 nm far from the metal plane,showing that these carboxylates are not grafted in the brucite-like layers.These LDHs are thermally stable up to around 150℃,after which dehydroxylation of the hydroxide layers is observed.The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters were obtained and compared to the Eu^(3+)-containing complexes with the same ligand series indicating a more symmetrical and less polarizable chemical environment around the rare earth ion.

Neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury(SCI) is a complex condition that responds poorly to usual treatments. Cell transplantation represents a promising therapy;nevertheless, the ideal cell type in terms of neurogenic potential and effectiveness against pain remains largely controversial. Here, we evaluated the ability of fetal neural stem cells(fNSC) to relieve chronic pain and, secondarily, their effects on motor recovery. Adult Wistar rats with traumatic SCI were treated, 10 days after injury, with intra-spinal injections of culture medium(sham) or fNSCs extracted from telencephalic vesicles(TV group) or the ventral medulla(VM group) of E/14 embryos. Sensory(von Frey filaments and hot plate) and motor(the Basso, Beattie,Bresnahan locomotor rating scale and inclined plane test) assessments were performed during 8 weeks. Thereafter, spinal cords were processed for immunofluorescence and transplanted cells were quantified by stereology. The results showed improvement of thermal hyperalgesia in the TV and VM groups at 4 and 5 weeks after transplantation, respectively. Moreover, mechanical allodynia improved in both the TV and VM groups at 8 weeks. No significant motor recovery was observed in the TV or VM groups compared with sham. Stereological analyses showed that ~70% of TV and VM cells differentiated into NeuN+ neurons,with a high proportion of enkephalinergic and GABAergic cells in the TV group and enkephalinergic and serotoninergic cells in the VM group. Our study suggests that neuronal precursors from TV and VM, once implanted into the injured spinal cord, maturate into different neuronal subtypes, mainly GABAergic, serotoninergic, and enkephalinergic, and all subtypes alleviate pain, despite no significant motor recovery. The study was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of the Medical School of the university of S?o paulo(protocol number 033/14) on March 4, 2016.

In the last few years,feed additives have been used in animal nutrition to improve nutrient utilization,health parameters and animal performance.However,the use of antibiotics as feed additives has allowed the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance(AMR),which can bring as a consequence,an increase in the morbidity and mortality of diseases that were previously treatable with antibiotics.In this context,antimicrobial peptides(AMP)have appeared as a promising strategy because they have multiple bio-logical activities and represent a powerful strategy to prevent the development of resistant microor-ganisms.Despite the small number of studies applied in vivo,AMP appear as a potent alternative to the use of antibiotics in animal nutrition,due to an increase in feed efficiency and the prevention/treatment of some animal diseases.This review discusses the problems associated with antimicrobial resistance and the use of AMP as a strong candidate to replace conventional antibiotics,mainly in the animal industry.

Use of regression trees to predict overweight trucks from historical weigh-in-motion data

The traffic of overloaded trucks is a critical problem in highways.It affects pavement performance life,reduces the service life of bridges,and has a negative impact on road safety,average speed and level of service.There are several practices to prevent the truck overloading issue,i.e.,enforcement activities to verify the truck’s compliance with the legal weight limits.This paper investigates the development of a method that uses available weigh-in-motion(WIM)data to identify overloaded truck weight and travel patterns.The proposed approach is based on regression trees method,a simple and easily understandable analytic tool used to build prediction models from a large set of data.An overall analysis of the overloaded truck regression tree model shows that the most important variable to classify and predict overloading is the truck type.Regarding the axle overloading,the most significant variable is the time of the day(most of the overloaded trucks travel at late night or early morning).The regression tree results can be used to optimize the efficiency of administration activities by planning truck enforcement operations based on the more critical scenarios.Also,the results improve the knowledge about the load characteristics of trucks,which can lead to more effective pavement management systems and more assertive pavement structure designs.

In the inspiring extract highlighted in this paper,Saussure observes how the relation between the elements of the sign change and evolve over time.In his Cours,he also details the elements of the linguistic sign and the principles governing them,defining language as a system of signs.Despite the natural resistance to changes in language in order to enable it to continually fulfill its function,that is,despite the necessary immutability of linguistic signs,they change over time,by being in constant contact with the communities of speakers,to whom language actually belongs.This may seem paradoxical because language is composed of arbitrary relations between signified and signifier that seek to represent concepts.Saussure refers to a principle of change in language linked to a principle of continuity.The present study focuses on the semiotic and communicational aspects of the development of linguistic systems in time,understood from a systemic perspective.It is sought to evince how signs perpetuate themselves and evolve through their constant interaction with real communities of language users.This approach can offer new insights about the continuity of linguistic systems as systems of signs that present immutable and mutable characters,and whose evolution can be understood based on open systems parameters,such as permanence,autonomy and sensitivity to flows of information,as studied by current theories and authors,showing that,to preserve its semiological life (CGL,1959,p.76),a living language must continuously reflect the purposes of its users.

Papillary fistulotomy vs conventional cannulation for endoscopic biliary access:A prospective randomized trial

AIM To compare the cannulation success, biochemical profile, and complications of the papillary fistulotomy technique vs catheter and guidewire standard access.METHODS From July 2010 to May 2017, patients were prospectively randomized into two groups: Cannulation with a catheter and guidewire(Group Ⅰ) and papillary fistulotomy(Group Ⅱ). Amylase, lipase and C-reactive protein at T0, as well as 12 h and 24 h after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and complications(pancreatitis, bleeding, perforation) were recorded.RESULTS We included 102 patients(66 females and 36 males, mean age 59.11 ± 18.7 years). Group Ⅰ and Group Ⅱ had 51 patients each. The successful cannulation rates were 76.5% and 100%, respectively(P = 0.0002). Twelve patients(23.5%) in Group Ⅰ had a difficult cannulation and underwent fistulotomy, which led to successful secondary biliary access(Failure Group). The complication rate was 13.7%(2 perforations and 5 mild pancreatitis) vs 2.0%(1 patient with perforation and pancreatitis) in Groups Ⅰ and Ⅱ, respectively(P = 0.0597). CONCLUSION Papillary fistulotomy was more effective than guidewire cannulation, and it was associated with a lower profile of amylase and lipase. Complications were similar in both groups.

Pterygium is a benign lesion usually growing from the nasal side of the conjunctiva onto the cornea.Most cases of pterygium does not cause problem or requires specific treatment.The exact cause of pterygium is not clear yet,but some factors are pointed as causes,being the most important the long-term ultraviolet ray exposure.Pterygium surgery is usually considered when there are symptoms that do not respond to conservative treatment.Recurrence is the main complication of the surgery,and much has been done to avoid it.Mitomycin C（MMC） has been used as a fibroblast proliferation inhibitor during the surgery to reduce the chance of recurrence of the pterygium.This review describes the use of MMC as an adjunctive,the optimal dosage,the duration of administration of MMC and possible complications,when used during,after and before the surgery.Most studies suggest that increased exposure（dose or duration） of MMC is associated with a lower recurrence,but with higher risks of complications.

Mast cells are immune cells of the myeloid lineage that are found throughout the body,including the central nervous system.They perform many functions associated with innate and specific immunity,angiogenesis,and vascular homeostasis.Moreover,they have been implicated in a series of pathologies(e.g.,hypersensitivity reactions,tumors,and inflammatory disorders).In this review,we propose that this cell could be a relevant therapeutic target in multiple sclerosis,which is a central nervous system degenerative disease.To support this proposition,we describe the general biological properties of mast cells,their contribution to innate and specific immunity,and the participation of mast cells in the various stages of multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis development.The final part of this review is dedicated to an overview of the available mast cells immunomodulatory drugs and their activity on multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis,including our own experience related to the effect of ketotifen fumarate on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis evolution.

Zeyheria tuberculosa(Vell.)Bureau ex Verl.is among the Brazilian flora threatened with extinction.It has high-quality wood and can be used to recover herbicidecontaminated areas.However,abiotic stresses can harm seed germination and seedling development under adverse conditions and need to be understood to improve autochthonous or indigenous biodiversity conservation and strengthen reforestation projects.This study evaluated the effects of temperature,water and saline stress on Z.tuberculosa seed germination and water stress on seedling growth.Three laboratory experiments evaluated germination under:(1)different temperatures(20,25,30,35 and 40℃);(2)different water potentials simulated with polyethylene glycol(PEG6000)at 25 and 30℃;and,(3)different osmotic potentials simulated with NaCl at 25 and 30℃.In addition,a greenhouse experiment subjected seedlings to five water regimes(20%,35%,50%,65%and 80%of maximum substrate water holding capacity).In the laboratory,seedling biometry and germination were evaluated,while physiological and morphological parameters were assessed in the greenhouse.Physiological potential of seeds increased at 25 and 30℃.Germination and vigor decreased as water and saline stresses increased.Germination tolerance thresholds for water and salt stresses were-0.6 and-0.4 MPa,respectively.In the greenhouse,the most restrictive water regimes reduced seedling physiological and morphological parameters.Seedling development was compromised at moisture levels below50%field capacity.

The rare earth elements are considered critical metals,due to the risk of supply interruption.The recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment can be an alternative to supply the rare earth market.Several processes have been developed,and by aqueous media is the most prominent,which makes possible the extraction and separation of elements even in low concentration(traces).As an example of thermal processing,the use of thermodynamic simulations might benefit the metal extraction in hydrometallurgical processing.For this reason,the goal of this work is to evaluate the use of FactSage 7.2 software for the leaching of fluorescent lamp powders by sulfuric acid.The effect of concentration and temperature was evaluated.Results comprise that the thermodynamic software wellpredicted the solid phase formed in all residues of leaching experiments-gypsum was predicted by the software and identified in XRD analyses.It demonstrates that FactSage software can be explored for metals extraction in aqueous media,being important for trace-elements extraction.Yttrium extraction reaches up to 95%at 45℃using H_(2)SO_(4)2 mol/L.
