Red-emitting CaWO4:Eu^(3+),Tm^(3+)phosphor for solid-state lighting:Luminescent properties and morphology evolution

CaWO_(4):xEu^(3+),yTm^(3+)crystals were obtained by facile synthesis at low temperature by the microwaveassisted hydrothermal method(MAH).The phase formation,morphology,luminescent properties and ene rgy transfer were *** X-ray diffraction(XRD)re sults show the formation of a scheelitelike tetragonal structure without the presence of secondary *** growth mechanism of hierarchical micro structures based on self-assembly and Ostwald-ripening processes was evaluated,obtaining different types of *** luminescence spectra of CaWO_(4):Eu^(3+),Tm^(3+)at 325 nm excitation show the predominance of red emission at the 5 D0→7 F2(Eu^(3+))transition at 624 *** feature signals dominant behavior of the electric dipole *** presence of Tm^(3+)is notably evident in the absorption spectra by the related excitation transitions:3 H6→1 G4,3 H6→3 F3 and 3 H6→3 *** parameters are discussed to characterize CaWO_(4):Eu^(3+),Tm^(3+)*** study of the emission spectrum as a function of the concentration of Eu^(3+)(x mol%)and Tm^(3+)(y mol%)indicates that the CaWO_(4):Eu^(3+),Tm^(3+)phosphors show stronger red emission intensity and exhibit the CIE value of x=0.63 and y=*** photoluminescence results show 97%high color purity for CaWO_(4):4 mol%Eu^(3+),a high CRI(92%)and a low CCT of 1085 *** results demonstrate that the CaWO_(4):Eu^(3+),Tm^(3+)red phosphors are promising as color converters for application in white light-emitting diodes and display devices.

The Influence of Demoiselle Aircraft on Light and General Aviation Design

In 1907, aviation pioneer Santos-Dumont had the idea of building a very light airplane. He designed and built the SD 19, the Demoiselle, an aircraft with a 6 meter wing span and a 24 HP engine of his own design. The Demoiselle was very successful in flying and, became very popular and its development continued as SD20, SD21 and SD22 （his last airplane）. The influence of the Demoiselle on design principles of light aircraft and general aviation were studied in this work, using statistical entropy, The designs number 20 and 22 may be considered dominant and influenced the design principles of light aircraft and general aviation.

Evaluation of functional capacity, body composicion and pulmonary function after bariatric surgery

Introduction: Obesity has been considered a global epidemic and a serious public health problem closely related to other diseases. Moreover, obese individuals have limitations in physical capacity and pulmonary function. Weight loss induced by bariatric surgery appears to help reverse this situation. However, questions about physical capacity and lung function, and its relationship with body composition remain to be clarified. Objective: To evaluate the physical capacity, body composition and lung function in women undergoing bariatric surgery. Methods: Twenty five women who underwent bariatric surgery between 6 and 24 months ago, and 10 non-obese women were evaluated for exercise capacity by the six minutes walk test (6 MWT), body composition by bio-electrical impedance analysis and lung function by spirometry and measurement of maximal static respiratory pressures. Results: Subjects with BMI 2 were found to have better physical performance, demonstrated by increased 6 MWT distance, not differing from non-obese women. When compared with non-obese women, there were no significant differences in body composition and lung function. Higher BMI was correlated with shorter distances in 6 MWT. Conclusion: 6 to 24 months after surgery, when the weight loss of patients who underwent bariatric surgery reaches levels considered non-obese, it provides improvement in physical performance to a level similar to that of non-obese patients.

In Vitro Study of Photodynamic Therapy for Treatment of Bacteremia in Whole Blood

Antibiotic resistance has been compromised hospitalized patients with serious infections. The main cases of bacteremia can be caused by antibiotic resistant pathogens. Photodynamic therapy （PDT） has been shown as an alternative for inactivation of microorganisms in blood. In this therapy photochemical mechanisms occur that may prevent the development of bacteria. This study aims optimization of PDT parameters for blood decontamination. Concentration ofphotosensitizer （PS）, light dose （LD） and incubation time （IT） were studied for hemolysis and cell toxic effects. It was observed that PDT can be used for microbial inactivation in total blood reducing 0.85 log10 CFU/mL ofS. aureus at 15 J/cm^2 and 50μg/mL of Photogem .

Analysis on the daily courses of water potential of nine woody species from Cerrado vegetation during wet season

The water potential (Ψ) daily courses of 9 woody species from Cerrado vegetation in different weather conditions during wet season were observed and analyzed. The adjusting strategies of 9 species could be divided into 3 groups according to Cluster Analysis and based on the data observed on the January 18, March 20 and April 6. The Ψ values of the first group, which included 2 species, were maintained at the higher level consistently. The Ψ values of the second group, which included 5 species, were intermediate level. The Ψ values of the third group, which included 2 species, were kept in the lower level. The Ψ values of all species always kept pace with the weather condition, especially water condition. During the clear day only one Ψ value peak for all species occurred at midday (12∶30–13∶30). When the overcast or raining occurred for a short period, the fluctuation of Ψ values would appear after about 15–30 min responding to the change of weather condition. Even in the same group under the same external circumstance, there was a clear variation of the leaf Ψ values among different species, which showed that the strategy diversity for plant to balance water relation. From January to April, the Ψ values of 9 species reduced in response to the drought condition. The species with the lower values of water saturation deficiency at turgid loss point (W sdtlp) the osmotic potential at saturation (πsat), the osmotic potential at turgid lose point (πtip) or lower predawn water potential (Ψpd) usually had the lower Ψ values at midday. The mechanism of water balance controlled by many systems has been assumed.

Physical and Chemical Matrix Effects in Soil Carbon Quantification Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Advanced field methods of carbon (C) analysis should now be capable of providing repetitive, sequential measurements for the evaluation of spatial and temporal variation at a scale that was previously unfeasible. Some spectroscopy techniques, such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), have portable features that may potentially lead to clean and rapid alternative approaches for this purpose. The goal of this study was to quantify the C content of soils with different textures and with high iron and aluminum concentrations using LIBS. LIBS emission spectra from soil pellets were captured, and the C content was estimated (emission line of C (I) at 193.03 nm) after spectral offset and aluminum spectral interference correction. This technique is highly portable and could be ideal for providing the soil C content in a heterogeneous experiment. Dry combustion was used as a reference method, and for calibration a conventional linear model was evaluated based on soil textural classes. The correlation between reference and LIBS values showed r = 0.86 for medium-textured soils and r = 0.93 for fine-textured soils. The data showed that better correlation and lower error (14%) values were found for the fine-textured LIBS model. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 0.32% for medium-textured soils and 0.13% for fine-textured soils. The results indicated that LIBS quantification can be affected by the texture and chemical composition of soil. Signal treatment was shown to be very important for mitigation of these interferences and to improve quantification.

Comparison of artificial neural networks with empirical correlations for estimating the average cycle time in conical spouted beds

Conventional spouted beds have been extensively used in many real-life applications but are not suited for all types of materials, especially fine particles, which require internal devices to improve their motion in the spouted bed. However, unlike conventional spouted beds, there are almost no mechanistic or empirical models available for the design of spouted beds with internals. Given the availability of an extensive but not experimentally designed database, the main purpose of this study is to present an analysis of neural networks and empirical models in terms of their suitability to fit and predict average cycle times in conical spouted beds with and without draft tubes. The parameters investigated are particle size, density, contactor angle, gas inlet diameter, static bed height, and draft tube features. Although the amount of information is always a key factor when fitting models, the size of the database used in this study strongly affects the fitting performance of empirical models, whereas artificial neural networks are more influenced by how the data are scaled. Results of model verification show that both techniques are suitable for predicting average cycle times for data outside the range covered by the database.

Enhancement of the Photodynamic Therapy Effect on Streptococcus Mutans Biofilm

Biofilm is a community of bacteria, less susceptible to traditions treatments. Although photodynamic therapy （PDT） is a very effective way to microorganism inactivation, in biofilm it is not as efficient as it is in planktonic bacteria cultures. The increment of an element to increase the effectiveness of PDT was our aim. Therefore, this in vitro study evaluates the susceptibility ofa biofilm formed by Streptococcus mutans on metallic surface of orthodontic accessories under the application of PDT with a surfactant. Samples obtained from blades of orthodontic bands （NiCr）, where used as adhesion surface for the biofilm. They were treated with 1 mg/ml of curcumin, with 0.1% of sodium dodecyl sulfate and exposed to 30 J/cm^2 of light （455 nm）. Eight experimental groups were studied, including the positive and negative controls. The results show that the group with PDT and surfactant had a significant decrease （p 〈 0.001） in viability. In this case, the reduction observed was of 5.6 log10 （CFU/ml） in comparison to the control group. We have shown that, even though the biofilm is very tough and complex structure, we are able to promote almost the complete inactivation ofS. mutans in systems similar to an orthodontic treated patient＇s mouth.
