In eukaryotic organisms cellular fate and tissue specific gene expression are regulated by the activity of proteins known as transcription factors that by interacting with specific DNA sequences direct the activation or repression of target genes. The post genomic era has shown that transcription factors are not the unique key regulators of gene expression. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation, post-translational modifications of histone proteins, remodeling of nucleosomes and expression of small regulatory RNAs also contribute to regulation of gene expression, determination of cell and tissue specificity and assurance of inheritance of gene expression levels. The relevant contri- bution of epigenetic mechanisms to a proper cellular function is highlighted by the effects of their deregulation that cooperate with genetic alterations to the development of various diseases and to the establishment and progression of tumors.

Heart Rate Variability as an Indicator of Stress in Students’ Athletes

Introduction: The wellbeing of student’s athletes has a paramount importance, a prolonged period of cognitive and physical performance that characterizes the life of student’s athletes often leads to fatigue, and a psychobiological state that increases the risk of injury and accidents. The use of Heart rate variability (HRV) has become increasingly popular as a non-invasive methodology that provides an indirect insight into the autonomic nervous system. HRV can be utilized as a diagnostic tool in detection of autonomic nervous system impairment and sympatho-vagal imbalance. HRV technology is employed to monitor the internal response of athletes to workload and identify athletes’s psychophysical stress to predict and therefore prevent injuries. Objective: The objective of the investigation is to establish whether the use of Polar H10 sensor heart rate monitors worn by athletes in a sitting position (inclination 60 degrees) during periods characterized by stress can provide a valid and non-invasive method to assess the psychophysiological state during sports competition and school exams. Method and Statistics: In the study, the HRV of 12 basketball students athletes and 4 students non-athletes was analyzed as a control group. The autonomic nervous system activity was assessed based on heart variability parameters (HRV): SDNN, rMSSD, LF, HF, and LF/HF. The measurements were made after establishing the baseline at rest, during the training phase (CT), competition phase (CC) and during the acute phase of stressors due to school exams coinciding with the competitive season (CC + E). Results: Compared to the respective values prior to the stress of the competitions and exams, a significant decrease in HRV indices was found: SDNN (P Conclusions: The analysis and examination of the data on the sample of the student population also showed a statistically significant correlation between decreased cardiac variability and injuries or indisposition to physical exertion.

The Corporate Social Responsibility in the Italian Agri-Food Sector

The considerable social, economic, legislative and political changes that have marked the agri-food sector over time have brought about new needs related to the ethical-social and environmental field. These requirements have imposed on organizations operating in the sector a change in their organizational and management models. In this context, CSR （corporate social responsibility） has assumed great importance in the context of the new managerial logic of agri-food companies, outlining a management model based on balancing the interests of all stakeholders, thanks to integration of traditional economic objectives with others environmental and social. This paper aims to examine, in the first part, the path that has characterized the enlargement of the corporate vision and the related responsibilities, towards aspects related to the ethical, social and environmental dimension, in the Italian agri-food sector. Subsequently, the current approach to CSR was outlined through a review of the main tools implemented. This is in order to evaluate the opportunities that may derive from a strategic orientation aimed at building the sustainability of organizations in its triple dimension： economic, environmental and social. Finally, the main critical elements that hinder the dissemination of CSR tools in agri-food organizations have been outlined.

The Role of biogas in the Italian Energy Scenario： The Case of “Tempio” Farm

Over the last few years, anaerobic digestion has been widespread in many European countries, including Italy. This technology is used not only for the purpose of recovering renewable energy （biogas） but also to control smelly emissions and to stabilize biomasses before their agronomic use. Therefore, it is necessary to stxengfthen and rationalize systems that exploit anaerobic digestion processes of vanious types ofbiomass （biomass ofzootechnical and agro-industrial biomass, energy crops, crop residues, etc.）, a case in point is the “Tempio” farm. The agricultural world increasingly is interested in the opportunities deriving from the attention to environmental issues linked, for example, to the enhancement of organic waste, the growing energy demand, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, the zootechinical sector can be the driving force for the large-scale development of anaerobic digestion, as is already happening in other European realities. The benefits that they can derive are many and are linked to an improvement in the environmental sustainability of farms, the integration of green energy income, the reduction of enviromnental problems related to emissions into the atmosphere and smells and better utilization of agronomic fertilizer elements present in the slurry.

Bisphosphonates and adipogenesis: Evidence for alendronate inhibition of adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes through a vitamin D receptor mediated effect

Background: Adipocyte and osteoblast derive from the same mesenchimal progenitor. Age-related decrease in bone mass is accompanied by an increase in marrow adipose tissue. Vitamin D3 (VD3) inhibits adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Recently it has been demonstrated that alendronate (ALN) inhibits adipogenesis while promoting osteoblast differentiation of mesenchimal stem cells. Aim of the Study: To evaluate the role of ALN on adipocyte differentiation in vitro and the potential synergic role of VD3 co-treatment. Procedures: Murine 3T3-L1 and 3T3-F442A preadipocytes were routinely differentiated in presence of ALN and VD3 10-9 - 10-7 M for 7 days and then stained with Oil Red O. The effect of these treatments on mRNA expression of the main molecular markers of adipocyte differentiation (PPARγ and C/EBPα) and VD Receptor (VDR) were analyzed through RT-PCR. Results: Both ALN and VD3 showed a marked anti-adipogenic effect on 3T3-L1 cells. Co-incubation of ALN 10-8 M and VD3 10-9 M displayed no synergic effect on inhibition of adipogenesis. PPARγ mRNA expression was significantly reduced by ALN and VD3. mRNA expression of C/EBPα was reduced only by VD3 treatment. An increase in VDR mRNA expression of 3T3-L1 cells was observed with both ALN and VD3. On the contrary, 3T3-F442A cells, which are in a more advanced adipogenic differentiation stage compared to 3T3-L1, did not express detectable levels of VDR. Interestingly, adipose differentiation of 3T3-F442A was not affected by ALN nor VD3. These results suggest that VDR may represent the molecular target of the anti-adipogenic effect of ALN. Conclusion: VDR plays a critical role in mediating the anti-adipogenic effect of ALN. Further studies to clarify this mechanism are warranted.

The traditional business view—which assumes that the main contribution of companies to society is the creation of economic value—is being surpassed by a growing awareness of other values, including social and environmental ones. The diffusion of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in all sectors and, in recent time, also in the wine business, has been based on a stakeholder approach. Most of the existing key concepts and tools addressing CSR issues have been developed by, and in, the context of large enterprises. The multitude of Italian wine SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) remain at an early stage of environmental and social management, limited in most cases to local activities, characterized by an occasional approach and unrelated to the business strategy. But, due to increased pressure from stakeholders, environmental and social concern is gradually growing in SMEs as well. Nevertheless, CSR initiatives developed by large companies frequently fail when they are adopted by SMEs and also by the wine SMEs. In recent years, major companies have felt the need to work on CSR and progressively defined and adopted a wide range of instruments such as codes of conduct, process standard, environmental management standard, cause related marketing, corporate social reports, sustainability reports, etc. These instruments more than often represent the final result of experiments established by large sized organizations, often operating in distant countries, which have decided to satisfy the multiple requests from the always more complex context in which they operate. Many companies, therefore, have orientated themselves towards the accomplishment of new objectives centred, not only on gaining profit but, moreover, towards the creation of values: a more extensive value better known as “pluri-dimensional” shared by all the stakeholders within a new interdependent dynamism and inspired by a multitude of references (such as UN Global Compact, AA1000 Guidelines, Global R
