Antibacterial HA-coatings on bioresorbable Mg alloy

In this study, a calcium-phosphate coating was formed on a Mg-Mn-Ce alloy by the plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO). The antibiotic vancomycin, widely used in the treatment of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus), was impregnated into the coating.Samples with vancomycin showed high bactericidal activity against S. aureus. The mechanical and electrochemical properties of the formed coatings were studied, as well as in vitro cytotoxicity tests and in vivo tests on mature male rats were performed. According to SEM,EDS, XRD and XPS data, coatings had a developed morphology and contained hydroxyapatite, which indicates high biocompatibility.The analysis of roughness of coatings without and with vancomycin did not reveal any differences, confirming the high roughness of the samples. During electrochemical tests, an increase in corrosion resistance by more than two times after the application of PEO coatings was revealed. According to the results of an in vivo study, after 28 days of the implantation of samples with calcium phosphate PEO coating and vancomycin, no signs of inflammation were observed, while an inflammatory reaction developed in the area of implantation of bare alloy,followed by encapsulation. Antibiotic release tests from the coatings show a sharp decrease in the concentration of the released antibiotic on day 7 and then a gradual decrease until day 28. Throughout the experiment, no significant deviations in the condition and behavior of the animals were observed; clinical tests did not reveal a systemic toxic reaction.

Architecture of Graphics System with 3D Acceleration Support for Embedded Operating Systems

An increasing number of tasks now require the use of hardware accelerators to reduce the time required for computation and display the computational results.This paper presents a new graphics system architecture for operating systems(OSs)with microkernel architecture,including real-time OSs.The proposed system architecture provides capabilities for displaying graphical images on various information display devices and for accelerating graphical operations on GPU.The architecture of the graphics system uses a concept of allocators to manage system and video memory,provides an abstraction of memory operations with a single interface for video memory management,and simplifies memory handling where incorrect operation is the cause of many failures.A comparison between the performance of a real-time OS and Linux OS implementing the graphics system using the example of a glmark2 benchmark is presented,thereby the superiority of the proposed architecture in several scenarios is demonstrated.

A new theoretical method to study super-multiperiod superlattices has been developed.The method combines the precision of the 8-band kp-method with the flexibility of the shooting method and the Monte Carlo approach.This method was applied to examine the finest quality samples of super-multiperiod Al_(0.3)Ga_(0.7)As/GaAs superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy.The express photoreflectance spectroscopy method was utilized to validate the proposed theoretical method.For the first time,the accurate theoretical analysis of the energy band diagram of super-multiperiod superlattices with experimental verification has been conducted.The proposed approach highly accurately determines transition peak positions and enables the calculation of the energy band diagram,transition energies,relaxation rates,and gain estimation.It has achieved a remarkably low 5%error compared to the commonly used method,which typically results in a 25%error,and allowed to recover the superlattice parameters.The retrieved intrinsic parameters of the samples aligned with XRD data and growth parameters.The proposed method also accurately predicted the escape of the second energy level for quantum well thicknesses less than 5 nm,as was observed in photoreflectance experiments.The new designs of THz light-emitting devices operating at room temperature were suggested by the developed method.

Catalytic co-combustion of biomass and brown coal in a fluidized bed:Economic and environmental benefits

The work is devoted to the study of combustion of brown coal,pine sawdust,and their mixtures in a fluidized bed of catalyst at 600-750℃.It is shown that an increase in the content of sawdust in a mixture with brown coal leads to an increase in the burnout degree of solid fuel from 94.4%to 99.9%,while the emission of greenhouse gases in the form of CO_(2)CO and NOxis reduced(CO_(2)from the biomass is not included in the balance).The high content of alkaline earth metal oxides(CaO and MgO)in the mineral part of brown coal,sawdust,and their mixtures eliminates the emission of sulfur oxides and the slagging of heat-exchange surfaces during the combustion in a fluidized bed of catalyst.The optimal temperature,when the highest burnout degree of the above fuels is achieved in the combustion is 750℃.It is also shown that the increase in temperature and the content of sawdust in the composition of the fuel mixtures has a positive effect on the economic and environmental process indicators.

Study of asphaltene reaggregation in toluene/heptane mixture by dynamic and static light scattering

This paper presents the study of the effect of multiple ultrasonic impacts on submicron asphaltene aggregates in a toluene/heptane solution,conducted with dynamic light scattering technique.The objects of the study were four samples of asphaltenes obtained from four different oils.For all samples,the change in the average size of the asphaltene submicron aggregates with time was measured after the addition of a precipitant(heptane)to a solution of asphaltenes in toluene at an amount above the threshold concentration.Asphaltene aggregates formed in solution after the addition of the precipitant and were subjected to ultrasonic treatment,which led to the destruction of the asphaltene aggregates.Aggregation of destroyed asphaltenes was observed.The kinetics of this aggregation were similar to the kinetics of aggregation of asphaltenes after the addition of a precipitant.Multiple iterations of asphaltene aggregate destruction in the sample led to a significant change in the kinetics of aggregation:the growth of aggregates slowed and stabilized at a size of approximately 200 nm and 30 nm for the different studied samples.

The activity and selectivity of electrocatalytic CO_(2)reduction reaction(CO_(2)RR)to C_(2)products on metal catalysts can be regulated by molecular surfactants.However,the mechanism behind it remains elusive and debatable.Herein,copper nanowires(Cu NWs)were fabricated and decorated with cobalt phthalocyanine(CoPc).The electronic interaction between the Cu NWs,CoPc,CO_(2) and CO_(2)RR intermediates were explored by density functional theory(DFT)calculations.It was found that the selectivity and activity of CO_(2)RR towards C_(2)products on Cu NWs were considerably enhanced from 35.2%to 69.9%by surface decoration of CoPc.DFT calculations revealed that CO_(2)RR can proceed in the interphase between Cu substrate and CoPc,and the CO_(2)RR intermediates could synergistically bond with both Cu and Co metal centre in CuNWs-CoPc,which favours the adsorption of CO_(2),CO and CO_(2)RR intermediates,thus reducing the free energy for CO-COcoupling towards C_(2)products.The synergistic interaction was further extended to phthalocyanine(Pc)and other metal phthalocyanine derivatives(MPc),where a relatively weaker synergistic interaction of COintermediates with MPc and Cu substrate and only a slight enhancement of CO_(2)RR towards C_(2) products were observed.This study demonstrates a synergistic catalysis pathway for CO_(2)RR,a novel perspective in interpreting the role of CoPc in enhancing the activity and selectivity of CO_(2)RR on Cu NWs,in contrast to the conventional tandem catalysis mechanism.

Satellite mapping of air temperature under polar night conditions

A novel satellite technique for air temperature mapping with a spatial resolution of~100 m was proposed for the town of Apatity,the Kola Peninsula(Russia),taken as a case study.The main idea behind this novel technique is to find the statistical relationships between the land surface temperatures in each point of the study area,observed by multiple infrared thermal satellite imagery,and the time series of air temperatures recorded by World Meteorological Organization(WMO)weather station.Fourteen scenes of infrared thermal spectral band of the Landsat satellites for the period 2014–2019 were used,as well as the long-term time series of air temperature from the weather station and the results of air temperature observations carried out by the network of loggers.For calm weather conditions,according to the ground truth,the error of air temperature mapping wasσ=1.5°C,and the precision was estimated asδ=1.0°C.An analysis of the compiled air temperature map showed that,under polar night conditions,the air temperature on the hilltops was by 10–18°C higher than in the lowlands.It was concluded that,for economic reasons,as well as for the reasons of population health protection in the Arctic,it would be advisable to plan the placement of new cities on the hills.Each of these new areas should be designed in a“semi-isolated”manner in order to minimize the time needed by the local people for crossing the lowlands between the nearby districts.A characteristic feature of modern megalopolises is their internal structure formed by the growing primary settlements that can be considered as nuclei interlinked by transportation routes.Thus,the new Arctic cities can be called“Arctic megalopolises”because of their internal structure that is specific to megalopolises.

Fundamental matrix operations and solving linear systems of equations are ubiquitous in scientific investigations.Using the‘sender-receiver’model,we propose quantum algorithms for matrix operations such as matrix-vector product,matrix-matrix product,the sum of two matrices,and the calculation of determinant and inverse matrix.We encode the matrix entries into the probability amplitudes of the pure initial states of senders.After applying proper unitary transformation to the complete quantum system,the desired result can be found in certain blocks of the receiver’s density matrix.These quantum protocols can be used as subroutines in other quantum schemes.Furthermore,we present an alternative quantum algorithm for solving linear systems of equations.

CaAl_(2)Si_(2)O_(8) polymorphs:Sensitive geothermometers and geospeedometers

Plagioclase is the major rock-forming mineral constituting the Earth's crust,whereas anorthite(CaAl_(2)Si_(2)O_(8))is a common minerals in lunar highlands crust,meteorites,possibly in some comets and on Mercury.Besides anorthite,two high-temperature polymorphs of CaAl_(2)Si_(2)O_(8)are known:dmisteinbergite and svyatoslavite,which are found in burnt coal dumps,meteorites and pseudotachylytes.Here we present the results of detailed studies(quenching experiments,elemental analysis,Raman spectroscopy and in situ high temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction(up to 1000℃))on naturally co-occurring CaAl_(2)Si_(2)O_(8)polymorphs(anorthite,dmisteinbergite and svyatoslavite)from a burnt coal dump in Kopeisk,Russia.New polymorphs were found in all natural samples and obtained upon heating of dmisteinbergite(unquenchableβ-dmisteinbergite and quenchable y-dmisteinbergite).It was shown that Ca coordination differs significantly in CaAl_(2)Si_(2)O_(8)polymorphs,resulting in a different capacity to host Ba and possibly other large ion lithophile elements.Combining our data on natural samples with the previously published data on natural and synthetic compounds,we propose a new scheme of CaAl_(2)Si_(2)O_(8)polymorphs stability.Our results indicate that CaAl_(2)Si_(2)O_(8)polymorphs could be used for temperature estimations for both Earth and planetary sciences.

Evolutionary history of mountain voles of the subgenus Aschizomys (Cricetidae, Rodentia), inferred from mitochondrial and nuclear markers

In this study,we present an assessment of the evolutionary history and phylogenetic relationships of Asian mountain voles of the subgenus Aschizomys,genus Alticola,based on extensive sampling and phylogenetic analyses of data from mitochondrial and nuclear markers.Two species of this subgenus are widespread in the mountain areas of north-eastern Asia.However,both their distribution and taxonomic borders remained questionable for more than 100 years.Our study showed discordance in the phylogenetic patterns between nuclear and mtDNA markers.We found that mtDNA in A.lemminus is paraphyletic relative to A.macrotis,but nuclear markers demonstrated reciprocal monophyly.According to species distribution modeling,ranges of A.macrotis and A.lemminus experienced a secondary contact during the Last Glacial Maximum(approximately 22 kyr BP),and thus a hybridization event seems plausible during that period.Species tree analyses recovered a sister group relationship between the two species of the Aschizomys subgenus,with an estimated divergence date of around 0.8 Ma.Our results provided good support for currently recognized subspecies within both A.macrotis and A.lemminus based on mitochondrial and nuclear datasets.A new,yet undescribed form,supposedly of a subspecific status within A.lemminus,was found in the Bureinskiy Range in the Khabarovsk area.This finding expands the current species distribution range further to the southeast.
