Evaluation of in vitro cell and blood compatibility and in vivo analgesic activity of plant-derived dietary supplements

Objective: In vitro cell and blood compatibility of three dietary supplements, comprised of multiple plant extracts, Pneumo Go(PG), Green active(GA) and Equistasi(Eq), and their main component, the phytocomplex Matrix U.B.ò(Union Bio s.r.l.)(M), were evaluated. Moreover, preliminary in vivo tests were performed on GA in order to assess its ability to reduce pain in an animal ***: Cell compatibility was determined using fibroblasts(NIH3T3) and primary adult human microvascular endothelial cells(HMVECad) and the neutral red uptake test. Blood compatibility was evaluated by analyzing blood parameters after incubation of the products with sodium citrate anticoagulated whole blood. Thrombin time was determined by adding thrombin to aliquots of human plasma containing the samples. Clotting time was revealed by an automatic coagulometer. The in vivo analgesic effect of GA was evaluated in Wistar rats using the formalin ***: M and PG reduced the percentage of viable NIH3T3 cells, indicating their interference in the cell cycle. GA and Eq stimulated fibroblast proliferation and neutralized the toxic effect of M. M and PG reduced HMVECad cell viability. GA and Eq did not affect cell viability as well as negative control. The hemocompatibility tests indicated that all the samples did not interfere with fibrinogen. The in vivo test carried out in male rats showed a significant analgesic effect of GA in all formalin-induced pain ***: No hemotoxicity and good cell compatibility were found for all the tested samples. GA and Eq were the best candidates for further biocompatibility testing. Moreover, GA reduced pain in the animal model.

In this work, we report the modeling and the experimental demonstration of intermodal spontaneous as well as stimulated four-wave mixing(FWM) in silicon waveguides. In intermodal FWM, the phase-matching condition is achieved by exploiting the different dispersion profiles of the optical modes in a multimode waveguide. since both the energy and the wave vectors have to be conserved in the FWM process, this leads to a wide tunability of the generated photon wavelength, allowing us to achieve a large spectral conversion. We measured several waveguides that differ by their widths and demonstrate large signal generation spanning from the pump wavelength(1550 nm) down to 1202 nm. A suited setup evidences that the different waves propagated indeed on different order modes, which supports the modeling. Despite observing a reduced efficiency with respect to intramodal FWM due to the decreased modal overlap, we were able to show a maximum spectral distance between the signal and idler of 979.6 nm with a 1550 nm pump. Our measurements suggest the intermodal FWM is a viable means for large wavelength conversion and heralded photon sources.

This experimental study investigates the friction and wear of three coatings commonly used in industrial applications,particularly in hydrodynamic *** three materials under investigation were Babbitt,polyether ether ketone(PEEK)reinforced with 15%carbon fibers,and PEEK reinforced with 20%carbon *** first polymer material was extruded,while the other was produced by fused deposition modelling(FDM).The materials were subjected to sliding tests in a pin-on-disc configuration,with a steel ball serving as the counter *** tests were conducted at room temperature,with a load of 10 N and under three different lubrication conditions:dry,grease,and *** linear speed was set at 0.3 m/s for the dry and semi-solid lubrication tests,while for the oil tests,the speed was set at 0.25 m/*** greases used had consistency grades of NGlI 000 and NGlI *** IsO VG 68 circulation oil was used for the oil lubrication ***,thermodynamic analyses were performed under the most severe conditions(i.e.,dry)to investigate the steel-Babbitt and steel-PEEK contact.

Herein, we present a 2.5-dimensionaldynamic structural color based on nanogratings of heterogeneous materials, which were obtained by interweaving a pH-responsive hydrogelwith an IP-l photoresist. Transverse gratings printed with pH-responsive hydrogels elongated the period of longitudinal grating in the swollenstate, resulting in pH-tuned structural colors at a 45° incidence. Moreover, the patterned encoding and array printing of dynamic structuralcolors were achieved using grayscale stripe images to accurately encode the periods and heights of the nanogrid structures. Overall, dynamicstructural color networks exhibit promising potential for applications in information encryption and in situ sensing for microfluidic chips.

Probability distributions of arsenic in soil from brownfield sites in Beijing （China）： statistical characterization of the background populations and implications for site assessment studies

A probabilistic analysis was performed on soil arsenic concentration data from 4 brownfield sites at Beijing （Chaoyang and Haidian Districts）, involved in environmental assessment studies. The available data sets were processed to provide a statistical characterization of the background populations and differentiate ＂anomalous data＂ from the natural range of variation of arsenic concentrations in soil. The site-specific background distributions and the existing wide-scale background values defined for the Beijing area were compared, discussing related implications for the definition of metal contamination soil screening levels （ssls） in site assess- ment studies. The statistical analysis of As data sets discriminated site-specific background populations, encompassing 88% to 94% of the sample data, from oufliers values, associated with either subsoil natural enrichments or possible anthropogenic releases. Upper Baseline Concentration （UBC） limits （＋ 2σ level）, including most of the site-specific metal background variability, were derived based on the statistical characterization of the background populations. sites in the Chaoyang south District area had UBC values in the range 10.4-12.6mg·kg^-1. These ranges provide meaningful ssl values to be adopted for As in local site assessment studies. Using the wide-scale background value for the Beijing area would have erroneously classified most of the areas in the subject sites as potentially contaminated.

In order to solve the problem of poor formability caused by different materials and properties in the process of tailor-welded sheets forming,a forming method was proposed to change the stress state of tailor-welded sheets by covering the tailor-welded sheets with better plastic properties overlapping *** the same time,the interface friction effect between the overlapping and tailor-welded sheets was utilized to control the stress magnitude and further improve the formability and quality of the tailor-welded *** this work,the bulging process of the tailor-welded overlapping sheets was taken as the research *** alloy tailor-welded overlapping sheets bulging specimens were studied by a combination of finite element analysis and experimental *** results show that the appropriate use of interface friction between tailor-welded and overlapping sheets can improve the formability of tailor-welded sheets and control the flow of weld seam to improve the forming *** increasing the interface friction coefficient on the side of tailor-welded sheets with higher strength and decreasing that on the side of tailor-welded sheets with lower strength,the deformation of the tailor-welded sheets are more uniform,the offset of the weld seam is minimal,the limit bulging height is maximal,and the forming quality is optimal.

Is it better to be safe than sorry?This Hamletic dilemma has always stimulated medical-scientific debates in numerous fields of *** among these,the preventive-therapeutic approach to the treatment of brain trauma is one of the most striking *** brain injury(TBI)is a leading cause of brain damage among young and elderly populations with a very high hospitalization and death *** is characterized by two pathologically distinct but strictly consequential phases:a first characterized by an immediate and highly variable mechanical dysfunction of the brain tissue,which involves widespread cell death and tissue degeneration,followed by a second phase which can last from days to even years depending on the severity of the TBI and the patient’s pre-existing health *** processes,including inflammatory phenomena,oxidative stress associated with metabolic,vascular,and neuro-modulatory deficits,are very often responsible for neuro-motor and psychological deficits leading to long-term disabilities(Kaur and sharma,2018).

Analysis of images obtained from two-dimensional gel electrophoresis （2D-GE） is a topic of utmost importance in bioinformatics research, since commercial and academic software available currently has proven to be neither completely effective nor fully automatic, often requiring manual revision and refinement of computer generated matches. In this work, we present an effective technique for the detection and the reconstruction of over-saturated protein spots. Firstly, the algorithm reveals overexposed areas, where spots may be truncated, and plateau regions caused by smeared and overlapping spots. Next, it reconstructs the correct distribution of pixel values in these overexposed areas and plateau regions, using a two-dimensional least-squares fitting based on a generalized Gaussian distribution. Pixel correction in saturated and smeared spots allows more accurate quantification, providing more reliable image analysis results. The method is validated for *** exposed 2D-GE images, comparing reconstructed spots with the corresponding non-saturated image, demonstrating that the algorithm enables correct spot quantification.

This work aims to analyse the actions that companies working in large-scale distribution carry along their value chains to minimise impacts on climate *** operating in this field are aware that it is less effective to act directly on the core processes and need to involve the upstream value chain in their carbon reduction *** businesses,in fact,need to focus on the indirect GHG(Greenhouse Gases)emissions and depend on how suppliers manage their *** this sector,virtuous companies collaborate with their suppliers to get involved in a common path of quantifying and cutting said impacts *** aspect is particularly relevant in the case of large-scale ***,the process is not immediate since the supply chain is usually very dense and diverse,for instance,adopting various approaches that do not always *** any case,the key aspect is mapping these suppliers:one of the tools mostly used for this purpose is the survey,as a quick instrument able to reach hundreds of suppliers at the same time,receiving a fast and standardized response,which can easily be processed to form a comprehensive and harmonized mapping of the results as the first step for the subsequent implementation of mitigation strategies.
