Marine dispersion of Fukushima-derived radiocesium in the North Pacific and its implications

In recent years, Asia became the region with the highest increase in rate of urbanization and economic development in the world. According to recent estimates from the United Nations, the world population will increase 36% between 2000 and 2030, leading to a doubling of the number of urban dwellers in less developed regions, like Asia. Such rapid economic development has many associated environmental problems, including development of heavy aerosol pollution over Asia.

Classical integrability of strings in γ-deformed backgrounds

This paper considers classical strings propagating in γ-deformed AdS3 γ S^3 backgrounds generated by certain shift T-dualities accompanied （TsT） transformations on S^3 and AdS3, respectively. It finds that the U（1） currents of strings with the twisted boundary conditions are equal to those in γ-deformed backgrounds generated by TsT transformations on both S3 and ADS3. Applying the TsT transformations, it derives the local Lax connections and the monodromy matrices in γ-deformed backgrounds with the spectral parameter which ensure the classical integrability of the string theories.

Magnetic properties of Jiaxian red clay sequences from northern Chinese Loess Plateau and its paleoclimatic significance

Detailed rock magnetism investigation of the Jiaxian red clay sequences indicated that there are common magnetic mineralogy properties in red clay and loess-paleosol sequences from the Chinese Loess Plateau as well as the marked properties of themselves, magnetic min-erals mainly with magnetite, maghemite, hematite, and possibly limonite/goethite contributing to the magnetic behavior. Meanwhile, it is found that the strong paleosol in red clay sequences has a lower coercivity and higher content of ultra-fine ferrimagnetic grains than that of the weak pa-leosol, which is similar to loess and paleosol in upper Wucheng Loess sequences, and indicates that humid conditions and relatively strong pedogenesis play a significant role in the increase of ultra-fine magnetic minerals and transformation of the magnetic minerals. This suggests that, like Quaternary loess-paleosols, the change of characteristics of paleoclimatic conditions of the late Tertiary red clay deposits is fluctuant. In addition, the results of magnetic hysteresis properties show that the applied saturated field for samples from the Jiaxian red clay sequences is higher than that of the samples from eastern and southern Chinese Loess Plateau. It is obviously shown that there exist more hard magnetic minerals and relatively weak biochemical processes in the Jiaxian red clay sequences on northern Chinese Loess Plateau. We conclude that the paleocli-matic environment is different between northern and eastern/southern Chinese Loess Plateau, and it should be more arid in northern Chinese Loess Plateau.

Analysis of the causes of heavy aerosol pollution in Beijing,China:A case study with the WRF-Chem model

The causes and variability of a heavy haze episode in the Beijing region was analyzed. During the episode, the PM2.5 concentration reached a peak value of 450 μg/kg on January 18, 2013 and rapidly decreased to 100μg/kg on January 19, 2013, characterizing a large variability in a very short period. This strong vari- ability provides a good opportunity to study the causes of the haze formation. The in situ measurements （including surface meteorological data and vertical structures of the winds, temperature, humidity, and planetary boundary layer （PBL）） together with a chemical/dynamical regional model （WRF-Chem） were used for the analysis. In order to understand the rapid variability of the PM2.5 concentration in the episode, the correlation between the measured meteorological data （including wind speed, PBL height, relative humidity, etc.） and the measured particle concentration （PM2.5 concentration） was studied. In addition, two sensitive model experiments were performed to study the effect of individual contribution from local emissions and regional surrounding emissions to the heavy haze formation. The results suggest that there were two major meteorological factors in controlling the variability of the PM2.5 concentration, namely, surface wind speed and PBL height. During high wind periods, the horizontal transport of aerosol particles played an important role, and the heavy haze was formed when the wind speeds were very weak （less than 1 m/s）. Under weak wind conditions, the horizontal transport of aerosol particles was also weak, and the vertical mixing of aerosol particles played an important role. As a result, the PBL height was a major factor in controlling the variability of the PM2.5 concentration. Under the shallow PBL height, aerosol particles were strongly confined near the surface, producing a high surface PM2.5 concentration. Evolution of planetary boundary layer under different weather conditions,and its impact on aerosol concentrations

A field experiment was conducted in Tianjin, China from September 9-30, 2010, focused on the evolution of Planetary Boundary Layer （PBL） and its impact on surface air pollutants. The experiment used three remote sensing instruments, wind profile radar （WPR）, microwave radiometer （MWR） and micro-pulse lidar （MPL）, to detect the vertical profiles of winds, temperature, and aerosol backscattering coefficient and to measure the vertical profiles of surface pollutants （aerosol, CO, SO2, NOx）, and also collected sonic anemometers data from a 255-m meteorological tower. Based on these measurements, the evolution of the PBL was estimated. The averaged PBL height was about 1000-1300 m during noon/afternoon-time, and 200-300 m during night-time. The PBL height and the aerosol concentrations were anti-correlated during clear and haze conditions. The averaged maximum PBL heights were 1.08 and 1.70 km while the averaged aerosol concentrations were 52 and 17 μg/m＆3 under haze and clear sky conditions, respectively, The influence of aerosols and clouds on solar radiation was observed based on sonic anemometers data collected from the 255-m meteorological tower. The heat flux was found significantly decreased by haze （heavy pollution） or cloud, which tended to depress the development of PBL, while the repressed structure of PBL further weakened the diffusion of pollutants, leading to heavy pollution. This possible positive feedback cycle （more aerosols→lower PBL height → more aerosols） would induce an acceleration process for heavy ground pollution in megacities.

We show that for the Green-Schwarz superstring on AdS5 × S^5. the Caftan 1-forms associated with the fiat currents given by Bena, Polchinski and Roiban [Phys. Rev. D 69 （2004）046002] also satisfy equations of motion and the Virasoro constraint. Thus one can generate a series of classical solutions with a spectrum parameter from the existing one, and these solutions have the same infinite set of classically conserved quantities.

Dated deposition couplets link catchment erosion flux with storm discharge on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Tracing erosion flux within a single catchment is one of the major targets for the earth's Critical Zone science. The sedimentary succession in landslide-dammed reservoirs within the Chinese Loess Plateau(CLP) serves as a valuable archive of past erosion history. Deposition couplets and annual freeze–thaw layers were firstly identified for the sedimentary succession of the Jingbian reservoir on the northern CLP with high-resolution XRF core scanning. The deposition couplets in the reservoir since 1963 A.D. were further dated with ^(137) Cs activity. We found consistent one-to-one correspondence between couplet specific sediment yield and storm intensity. The reconstructed soil erosion history highlights the control of storm intensity and frequency on loess erosion on the northern CLP in the past hundreds of years.

Possible effects of climate change of wind on aerosol variation during winter in Shanghai,China

Several data sets were introduced to investigate the possible effects of climate-change-related variation of wind on aerosol concentration during winter in Shanghai, China. These data sets included the daily wind speed, wind direction, visibility, and precipitation from 1956 to 2010, hourly PM10 concentration from 2008 to 2010, and the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data of global atmospheric circulation from 1956 to 2010. The trend of aerosol concentration and its correlations with wind speed and wind direction in winter were analyzed. Results indicated that there was an increase in the number of haze days in winter of 2.1 days/decade. Aerosol concentration, represented by PMl0 in this study, was highly correlated to both wind speed and direction in winter. The PMl0 concentration increased as wind speed decreased, reaching maximum values under static wind conditions. The PM10 concentration was relatively lower under easterly winds and higher under westerly winds. The analysis showed that weaker East Asia winter monsoons have resulted in a reduction of wind speed, increase in static wind frequency, and decline in the frequency of northerly winds since the 1980s. Moreover, the rapid expansion of urban construction in Shanghai has changed the underlying surface considerably, which has led to a reduction in wind speed. Finally, a wind factor was defined to estimate the combined effects of wind speed and wind direction on aerosol concentrations in Shanghai. The analysis of this factor indicated that changes in atmosphere circulation and urbanization have had important effects on the number of winter haze days in Shanghai.
