Estimates of hydrocarbon losses during migration are critical to petroleum resource assessments based on mass balance calculations.Using knowledge acquired from physical experiments,we conducted numerical experiments to qualitatively simulate migration processes on a basin scale, and we have estimated the proportions of oil lost along different parts of the migration pathway. Between the point where oil is expelled from a source rock and its arrival in a trap,migration pathways were divided into three sections,namely vertical and lateral pathways within the area of the effective source rock(W),and lateral pathways outside this area(W). With reference to the concept of an independent migration unit(IMU),a prism-shaped domain with square top and bottom faces,the proportion of vertical pathways(Q) and lateral pathways (Q) in carrier beds in W may be estimated,using parameters obtained in migration experiments. The proportion of oil lost in W was obtained by statistical analysis of modelled results.It is found that the loss of oil within W decreases rapidly with increasing distance from the contact between W and W. Relative oil losses in migration pathways were estimated by considering two typical migration models:a sloping rectangular plate model,and a circular synclinal model.Simulation results show that,for sandstone carrier beds at a basin scale,Q is one order of magnitude less than Q,and losses(Q) in W are two orders of magnitude less than those(Q + Q) in W.

Recent experimental observations have demonstrated that losses of oil in a secondary migration pathway depend largely on the characteristics of the pathway itself.Accurate assessments of the residual saturation are required to quantify losses during migration.In the present paper,the authors report on experimental procedures designed to evaluate the oil saturation at various stages of the migrationlinvasion process.The experiments made use of both apparatuses filled with an artificial medium composed of glass beads,and cores composed of reservoir sandstones from oilfields in NE China.The saturation of residual oil in the pathways was measured by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. Experiment results show that mobile oil continues to migrate in a porous medium when the supply of oil has been stopped,but that the migration pathway shrinks and may become disconnected into isolated segments.Once active migration ceases,the residual oil saturation varies significantly from location to location within a pathway,and the average residual oil saturation falls to 30-60%, depending on grain size and composition.A porous medium composed of large grains commonly contains large pores and pore throats and thus may correlate with low residual oil saturations.

Natural hydrofracturing caused by overpressure plays an important role in geopressure evolution and hydrocarbon migration in petroliferous basins.Its mechanism is quite well understood in the case of artificial hydraulic fracturing triggered by high-pressure fluid injection in a well.This is not so for natural hydraulic fracturing which is assumed to initiate as micro-cracks with large influence on the permeability of the medium.The mechanism of natural hydraulic cracking,triggered by increasing pore pressure during geological periods,is studied using a fracturing model coupled to the physical processes occurring during basin evolution.In this model, the hydraulic cracking threshold is assumed to lie between the classical failure limit and the beginning of dilatancy.Fluid pressure evolution is calculated iteratively in order to allow dynamic adjustment of permeability so that the fracturing limit is always preserved.The increase of permeability is interpreted on the basis of equivalent fractures.It is found that fracturing is very efficient to keep a stress level at the rock’s hydraulic cracking limit:a fracture permeability one order of magnitude larger than the intrinsic permeability of the rock would be enough. Observations reported from actual basins and model results strongly suggest that natural hydraulic cracking occurs continuously to keep the pressure at the fracturing limit under relaxed stress conditions.

Two dimensional simulations of percolation are realized on square networks of pore throats with a random capillary pressure distribution.We analyse the influence of a destabilizing gravity field(g) and of the standard deviation of the distribution of the capillary pressure thresholds(W).The fragmentation process is not taken into account in this study.For an increase of g or/and when W decreases,two transitions are analyzed with three different regimes displacement patterns:Invasion percolation,invasion percolation in a gradient,and invasion in a pure gradient.The transitions are controlled both by the ratio g/W,and by the sample size(L).A scaling law between the saturation at the percolation threshold and g/W allows delineating the three regimes in agreement with theoretical argument of the percolation in a gradient.

Accurate estimates of losses occurring during secondary petroleum migration are of vital importance for valid petroleum systems assessments.In this paper,we discuss the development of migration pathways and the corresponding hydrocarbon losses using data from laboratory experiments based on diphasic immiscible draining processes.These experiments permitted us to study the formation of migration pathways,the distribution of non-wetting oil along these pathways, and the re-utilization of existing pathways by later pulses of migrating oil. The configuration of a migration pathway can be characterized by a phase diagram whose coordinates are two dimensionless numbers:the capillary number and the Bond number(a measure of the buoyancy force).NMR imaging was used to measure the saturation of residual oil within the pathways.It was found that,after migration,the average residual oil saturation within a pathway was generally less than 40%at a resolution of 0.4mm.Hydrocarbon losses during migration were estimated as the product of the volumetric proportion of the migrating cluster struaure,defined using this spatial resolution,multiplied by the average residual oil saturation in the pathway.

In Sidi Chennane deposits (Morocco), the phosphatic series is composed of regular interbedded phosphatic and marly limestone layers. Exploitation of the phosphate in these deposits collides frequently with problems bound to the existence, in this series, of sterile bodies qualified as derangements. They cause two kinds of problems: 1) as they are hard, compact and masked by a Quaternary cover, they disturb the exploitation in some yards and give bad reserve calculation;2) even the use of wells and mechanical boreholes did not evidence their delimitation. Our study shows that these bodies can be detected and delimited using ground penetrating radar and electrical resistivity tomography methods. It is based on the acquisition and the interpretation of series tests using these methods carried out above visible sterile bodies in a trench of exploitation in order to have geologically valid information. The article concerns to the analysis of the results and of the proceeding for a possible large geophysics survey.
