Therapeutic potential of rutin in male infertility:A mini review

Male infertility has become a problem worldwide,and recent research has emphasized the development of more effective therapy options.Among natural compounds,rutin has been widely studied for its potential to treat dysfunction related to male infertility,including a reduction in sperm quality,spermatogenesis disruption and structural disruption in the testis.A thorough review of scientific literature published in several databases,including Google Scholar,PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus,was used to synthesize the present state of research on the role of rutin in male reproductive health.Rutin has been shown to possess antiapoptotic,antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities,among others,which are crucial in the management of male infertility.Numerous investigations have shown that rutin protects against male infertility and have explored the underlying mechanisms involved.The present review,therefore,assesses the therapeutic mechanisms involved in male infertility treatment using rutin.Rutin was able to mitigate the induced oxidative stress,apoptosis,inflammation,and related physiological processes that can cause testicular dysfunction.

Plantain-based diet modulates atrazine-induced testicular toxicities in rats

Objective:To assess the potential of plantain-based diet in modulating testicular toxicities in rats exposed to atrazine.Methods:The plantain-based diet at 50%,25% and 12.5% were prepared from the basal diet by substituting the corn starch with plantain fruit pulp flour at different percentages.Wistar rats were fed plantain-based diet in varying concentrations ranging from 12.5% to 50% of the basal diet for 21 days before or after atrazine treatment in a two-phase experiment:preventive and therapeutic phases.The therapeutic model(n=35)had seven groups with 5 rats each,including the control,atrazine,atrazine recovery,atrazine plus plantain-based diet 50%,25%,12.5%,and atrazine plus quercetin groups.The preventive model(n=30)had six groups of 5 rats,consisting of the control,atrazine,50%,25%,12.5% plantain-based diet plus atrazine,and quercetin plus atrazine groups.Gonadal hormones(testosterone,luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone),sperm parameters(sperm motility,viability,morphology and concentration),and testicular function indices(protein,cholesterol,glycogen,acid phosphatase,alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase)were measured.Results:The gonadal hormones,sperm characteristics,and testicular function indices of the rat testis decreased significantly in the atrazine group alongside degeneration of the histoarchitecture.However,plantain-based diet restored the gonadal hormone concentrations,semen parameters,and testicular function indices in both the preventive and therapeutic models.Conclusions:Treatment with plantain-based diet protects against rat testicular toxicity caused by atrazine via the modulation of gonadal hormones,sperm quality,testicular function index as well as histoarchitecture of rat testes.

Environmental pollution,such as water contamination,is a critical issue that must be absolutely addressed.Here,three different morphologies of tungsten-based photocatalysts(WO_(3)nanorods,WO_(3)/WS_(2)nanobricks,WO_(3)/WS_(2)nanorods)are made using a simple hydrothermal method by changing the solvents(H_(2)O,DMF,aqueous HCl solution).The as-prepared nanocatalysts have excellent thermal stability,large porosity,and high hydrophilicity.The results show all materials have good photocatalytic activity in aqueous media,with WO_(3)/WS_(2)nanorods(NRs)having the best activity in the photodegradation of bisphenol A(BPA)under visible-light irradiation.This may originate from increased migration of charge carriers and effective prevention of electron–hole recombination in WO_(3)/WS_(2)NRs,whereby this photocatalyst is able to generate more reactive·OH and·O_(2)^(–)species,leading to greater photocatalytic activity.About 99.6% of BPA is photodegraded within 60 min when using 1.5 g/L WO_(3)/WS_(2)NRs and 5.0 mg/L BPA at pH 7.0.Additionally,the optimal conditions(pH,catalyst dosage,initial BPA concentration)for WO_(3)/WS_(2)NRs are also elaborately investigated.These rod-like heterostructures are expressed as potential catalysts with excellent photostability,efficient reusability,and highly active effectivity in different types of water.In particular,the removal efficiency of BPA by WO_(3)/WS_(2)NRs reduces by only 1.5% after five recycling runs and even reaches 89.1%in contaminated lake water.This study provides promising insights for the nearly complete removal of BPA from wastewater or different water resources,which is advantageous to various applications in environmental remediation.

Long-Lasting Filtration of Oily Water by Anti-Fouling Underwater Oleophobic Sand Particles

The produced water from the oilfield was purified with filter material and then injected back into the ground.The serpentine filter material was easy to harden with the increase in filtration amount,which affected the water quality.A superhydrophilic/underwater oleophobic serpentine filter material was successfully prepared by a simple method of coating modification,which exhibited long-lasting filtration of oily water,good filtration and anti-fouling properties,and resistance to harden.The film-forming material of the superhydrophilic/underwater oleophobic coating was composed of SiO_(2) particles with small size,which could completely and evenly cover the filter particle.The weight loss was only 7.6%after mechanical stirring for 90 min.Compared with the original filter material,the superhydrophilic/underwater oleophobic serpentine filter material showed a better anti-fouling ability and resistance to harden.The filtration of crude oil emulsion and oil slick sewage showed a better backwashing performance.After 35 cycles of continuous filtration of suspended solids in wastewater,the backwashing rate reached 78.4%.The results provided an effective method for the filtration of oily wastewater in the oilfield.

Lower WC grain sizes in the nanometer range have positive effects on the properties of hardmetals(e.g.,hardness),but the established production processes of WC are limited to grain sizes of about 150 nm.To produce WC powder with grain sizes in the lower nanometer range,an alternative WC production process based on the chemical vapor transport(CVT) reaction of WO_(3) and H_(2)O forming gaseous WO_(2)(OH)_(2) at about 1100 ℃,followed by a carburation reaction with H_(2)/CH_(4)-gas mixtures was investigated.The influences of different process parameters such as furnace temperature,humidity and gas flows were investigated to improve the process.With the right set of parameters the produced powder consisted mainly of agglomerated WC grains with a size of about 5 nm.Beside the common hexagonal WC phase,the cubic WC1-xphase was stabilized due to the small crystallite sizes.In addition,a thin layer of amorphous carbon was present on the powder surface due to the catalytic methane decomposition on the WC surface.The amount of oxidic and metallic residues in the product powder was minimized with the parameter optimization and the powder yield was increased up to about 50%.With further optimization of the process parameters and usage of improved flow breakers,the purity and yield of the product powder can be further improved.Since an application in the hardmetal section is not realistic at the moment,applications in the catalysis sector could be considered due to the small grain size and good catalytic activity of the cubic WC1-xphase.

The Dimbokro health district has one of the highest incidences of malaria in Côte d’Ivoire, despite numerous campaigns to distribute Long-Acting Impregnated Mosquito Nets (LLINs). Given this observation, what are the population’s attitudes towards LLINs that could explain the high endemicity of malaria in Dimbokro? The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of people in the health area of Nofou, one of the villages in the Dimbokro health district where malaria is most prevalent, with a view to strengthening malaria control strategies. A collection of historical health data (malaria cases and LLIN usage rates) and a cross-sectional questionnaire survey was carried out from July 20 to August 03, 2022 in 400 households selected by systematic random sampling. Data were entered using Epi Info 7 and multivariate statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS 22 software. In the Dimbokro health district, the rate of LLIN use was negatively correlated (r = -0.771) with malaria incidence over the six years of historical data collection. Households had an average of 53% good knowledge, 68.6% good practices and 28.4% good attitudes towards LLINs. The study also revealed that the main factors explaining LLIN use in the Nofou health area are mosquito bite (ORa = 5.29 (1.12 - 25.04)), age of household members (ORa = 1.07 (1.01 - 1.14)) and marital status (ORa = 8.45 (1.70 - 45.02)). Awareness-raising on the use of LLINs should be intensified in the Dimbokro health district. Other control strategies, such as vector control and environmental sanitation, should be considered to combat malaria.

Background In developing countries,there is a lack of epilepsy knowledge among health workers.The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge,attitude and practice concerning epilepsy among nurses and midwives working in primary health care settings in Ouagadougou.Methods We carried out a cross-sectional study in the health districts of Ouagadougou from August 1st to September 15th,2017.All nurses and midwives working in three health districts were included in this study.Results A total of 213 participants with a mean age of 39.5 years were included in the survey;79.81%of them had a general certification in secondary education and 62%had a professional experience of more than 10 years.About 99%of the participants had not received training on epilepsy-related care during the last six months.In addition,74.5%of the participants had a good knowledge on epilepsy and 65%had a good practice toward epilepsy.The level of knowledge was associated with the workplace,years of training,and the professional experience.The level of knowledge about epilepsy was also associated with the level of education,while there was a significant link between professional status and nurses’level of practice in the management of seizures.Conclusions Efforts must be made to provide continuing education for nurses in order to improve their knowledge on epilepsy.

Lignin is a versatile biomass that possesses many different desirable properties such as antioxidant,antibacterial,anti-UV,and good biocompatibility.Natural lignin can be processed through several chemical processes.The processed lignin can be modified into functionalized lignin through chemical modifications to develop and enhance biomaterials.Thus,lignin is one of the prime candidate for various biomaterial applications such as drug and gene delivery,biosensors,bioimaging,3D printing,tissue engineering,and dietary supplement additive.This review presents the potential of developing and utilizing lignin in the outlook of new and sustainable biomaterials.Thereafter,we also discuss on the challenges and outlook of utilizing lignin as a biomaterial.

Background： Microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes （T2DM）, including diabatic retinopathy （DR）, diabetic kidney disease （DKD）, diabetic peripheral neuropathy （DPN） are the leading causes of visual loss, end-stage renal disease or amputation, while the current therapies are still unsatisfactory. Chinese medicine （CM） has been widely used for treating diabetic mettitus. However, most of the previous studies focused on the single complication. The role of CM treatment in T2DM patients with 2 or multiple microvascular complications is not clear. Objective： To appraise the curative effect of CM in T2DM patients with 2 or multiple microvascular complications, and to compare the effects of stationary treatment and individualized treatment in T2DM patients with microvascular complications. Methods： This trial will be an 8-center, randomized, controlled study with 8 parallel groups. A total of 432 patients will be randomized to 8 groups： DR study group （32 cases） and a corresponding control group （32 cases）, DR＋DKD study group （64 cases） and a corresponding control group （64 cases）, DR＋DPN study group （64 cases） and a corresponding control group （64 cases）, DR＋DKD＋DPN study group （56 cases） and a corresponding control group （56 cases）. The control group will receive stationary treatment, and the study group will receive individualized treatment based on CM syndrome differentiation in addition to stationary treatment. The study duration will be 50 weeks, comprising a 2-week run-in period, 24 weeks of intervention, and 24 weeks of follow-up. The outcomes will assess efficacy of treatment, improvement in CM symptoms, safety assessments, adherence to the treatment, and adverse events. Conclusion： This study will provide evidence of evidence-based medicine for CM treatment in two or multiple microvascular complications caused by T2DM. （Registration No. ChiCTR-IPR-15007072）
