Validating the use of ROS-scavenging bacteria as probiotics to increase coral resilience to thermal stress

Thermal stress causes the overproduction and toxic accumulation of reactive oxygen species(ROS),which seems to be correlated with coral bleaching and,ultimately,*** reduction of ROS concentration within the coral holobiont could minimize the effects of thermal stress and support efforts to reduce coral decline *** the current study,we explored the physiological responses of Pocillopora damicornis to ROS-scavenging bacteria inoculation as well as the microbiome restructuring that correlates with ***’s resilience to thermal stress after probiotic *** of corals with ROS-scavenging bacteria enhanced coral health and reduced ROS ***,the enhanced coral thermal resistance promoted by ROS-scavenging bacteria was also correlated with an overall coral microbiome *** addition,the complex network relationships between bacteria and Symbiodiniaceae in corals after ROS-scavenging bacteria inoculation contributed to corals’resilience to high ***,coral heat tolerance bacterial biomarkers,such as Myxococcota,were enriched in corals with added ROS-scavenging ***,our findings validate the selected ROS-scavenging bacteria as coral probiotics that could help corals resist thermal stress on a short ***,our data contribute to our understanding of the potential interactions between different members of the coral holobiont and the use of probiotics as tools to aid coral restoration efforts.

The genesis and environmental significance of red and black sedimentary interlay ers in coral reef of well Nanyong 2

The results of paleogeomagnetics and geo-chemistry of the coral reef in well Nanyong 2 of Nansha Is-lands showed that the bottom of the black sedimentary in-terlayer corresponds to the conversion boundary line be-tween Brunhes Postive Polarity and Matuyama Reversed Polarity (B/M) and the cold/warm (19/20) climatic conver-sion bounds on ()18O curve, 0.78 Ma ago; and the red sedi-mentary interlayer corresponds to the Reunion I polarity excursion (reversion) of the geomagnetic field, 2.01-2.04 Ma ago. Comparing with the normal light-coloured coral reef rock, the magnetic susceptibility (x), residual magnetization intensity (Mr) and the content of MnO and Fe2O3 of the black sedimentary layer appeared obviously positive ab-normity. The magnetic susceptibility (x), residual magnetiza-tion intensity (Mr) and the content of Fe2O3 of the red sedi-mentary layer also appeared positive abnormity. Hyperextended crustal structure of the Qiongdongnan Basin and subsequent magmatic influence from the Hainan mantle plume

The Qiongdongnan Basin(QDNB)is a rift basin located in the extension direction of the oceanic ridge of the Northwest Subbasin of the South China *** basin is surrounded by Late Cenozoic Ocean Island Basalts(OIBs)magmatism associated with the putative Hainan mantle ***,how the Hainan mantle plume has affected the QDNB has not been studied in *** reveal the crustal structure of the QDNB and the possible influence of the Hainan mantle plume,we conducted a wide-angle seismic exploration from Hainan Island across the QDNB to the Xisha Block,and obtained the crustal structure by travel-time *** results show that the crustal stretching factors of the Northern and Southern Rises of the QDNB are estimated to be 1.3-2.0,indicating slight or moderate crustal ***,the crustal stretching factor in the Central Depression of the QDNB is estimated to be more than 3.0,which means that the crust has been *** by two detachment faults(F2 and F11),the upper and lower crust show brittle and ductile thinning,*** anomalous low-velocity conduits penetrating the crystalline crust are developed in the Songnan Uplift and the Southern Rise of the *** P-wave velocities are 5.5-6.0 km s^(−1),which are significantly lower than those of the surrounding crust(6.0-6.8 km s^(−1)).The Late Cenozoic magmatic intrusions(e.g.,sills and dikes)and hydrothermal activities can be observed in the sedimentary strata above these low-velocity *** interpret that the low-velocity conduits might be the crustal magmatic footprints of the Hainan mantle plume,due to the correlated distributions of OIB-type magmatism,the magmatic intrusion patterns,the deep structure of the Hainan mantle plume and the high heat flow of 95 mW m^(−2).Thus,we propose that the crustal structure of the QDNB is the product of crustal hyperextension in the rifting stage and subsequently affected by the Hainan mantle plume *** study provide

We performed an assimilation experiment of the southern South China Sea in summer 2000, and the altimeter data were assimilated into Princeton Ocean Model (POM). The result was evaluated with the in situ data. There were obvious improvements of the currents in the southern South China Sea, and the modeling uncertainty coming from the error of wind stress forcing was reduced. This experiment provides us a new idea about improving the modeling of the ocean currents.

Low-noise,low-power-consumption seafloor vector magnetometer

The seafloor vector magnetometer is an effective tool for marine geomagnetic surveys and seafloor magnetotelluric(MT)***,the noise,power consumption,cost,and volume characteristics of existing seafloor vector magnetometers are insufficient for practical ***,a low-noise,low-power-consumption seafloor vector magnetometer that can be used for data acquisition of deep-ocean geomagnetic vector components is developed and presented.A seafloor vector magnetometer mainly consists of a fluxgate sensor,data acquisition module,acoustic release module,glass sphere,frame,burn-wire release,and anchor.A new low-noise data acquisition module and a fluxgate sensor greatly reduce power ***,compact size is achieved by integrating an acoustic telemetry module and replacing the acoustic release with an external burn-wire *** new design and magnetometer characteristics reduce the volume of the instrument and the cost of hardware considerably,thereby improving the integrity and deployment efficiency of the ***,it can operate for 90 days underwater at a maximum depth of 6000 *** seafloor vector magnetometer was tested in the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea and obtained high-quality geomagnetic *** deep-water environment facilitates magnetic field data measurements,and the magnetometer has an approximate noise level of 10 pT/rt(Hz)@1 Hz,a peak-to-peak value error of 0.2 nT,and approximate power consumption of 200 *** fluxgate sensor can measure the magnetic field in the lower frequency band and realize geomagnetic field measurements over prolonged periods.

Relationship Between Upper-Ocean Heat Content in the Tropical Indian Ocean and Summer Precipitation in China

An analysis of the Ishii ocean heat content(OHC) in the tropical Indian Ocean from the surface to 700-m depth shows that the OHC changes dramatically on the interannual timescale in the Indian *** first mode of empirical orthogonal function(EOF1) of the OHC shows that there is a strong air-sea interaction pattern in the Indian Ocean with a positive(negative) loading in the east and a negative(positive) loading in the *** seesaw oscillation pattern influences the summer precipitation in China with a North-South reversed *** analysis shows that during a positive(negative) OHC episode,an anomalous cyclonic(anticyclonic) circulation over the western Pacific and South China weakens(enhances) the monsoonal northward flow in the lower troposphere;meanwhile,anomalous meridional circulation connects the descending(ascending) branch over the Southeast Indian Ocean and the ascending(descending) branch in South China as well as a descending(ascending) branch over North *** of the mechanism behind these features suggests that(1) the accumulation of OHC-induced vorticity is related to the wave activity over the mid-latitudes and that(2) the meridional teleconnection induced by the Indo-Pacific air-OHC interaction appears over East Asia and the western *** of these patterns can cause summer precipitation anomalies in China.

The leafy seadragon certainly is among evolution’s most“beautiful and wonderful”species aptly named for its extraordinary camouflage mimicking its coastal seaweed ***,limited information is known about the genetic basis of its phenotypes and conspicuous ***,we revealed genomic signatures of rapid evolution and positive selection in core genes related to its camouflage,which allowed us to predict population dynamics for this *** genomic analysis revealed that seadragons have the smallest olfactory repertoires among all ray-finned fishes,suggesting adaptations to the highly specialized *** positively selected and rapidly evolving genes that serve in bone development and coloration are highly expressed in the leaf-like appendages,supporting a recent adaptive shift in camouflage appendage ***-out of bmp6 results in dysplastic intermuscular bones with a significantly reduced number in zebrafish,implying its important function in bone *** climate change-induced loss of seagrass beds now severely threatens the continued existence of this enigmatic *** leafy seadragon has a historically small population size likely due to its specific habitat requirements that further exacerbate its vulnerability to climate ***,taking climate change-induced range shifts into account while developing future protection strategies.
