Optimising mesh size with escape gaps in a dual-species portunid-trap fishery

In south-eastern Australia,the same baited,round traps(comprising 50–57-mm mesh netting)are used to target giant mud,Scylla serrata and blue swimmer crabs,Portunus armatus in spatially separated *** fisheries are characterised by the common,problematic discarding of undersized portunids(<85 and 65 mm carapace length;CL for *** and ***)and fish(yellowfin bream,Acanthopagrus australis).This poor selectivity was addressed here in two experiments assessing the utility of(1)traps partially or completely covered in larger mesh(91 mm to match the minimum legal size of the smaller ***),and then(2)any cumulative benefits of fitting species-specific escape *** experiment 1,there were no differences among catches of legal-sized portunids associated with either partial,or complete trap coverage with larger *** of mesh coverage,both designs of 91-mm traps also retained significantly fewer(by up to 42%)undersized *** and *** experiment 2,replicate traps completely covered in 91-mm mesh were tested against conventional traps comprising 56-mm mesh,and traps with the same mesh sizes,but also three escape gaps configured for either ***(46×120 mm)or ***(36×120 mm)(*** treatments in total).All modified traps maintained catches of legal-sized ***,and only the 91-mm traps with escape gaps caught fewer legal-sized *** undersized ***,*** and ***(mean catches reduced by up to 49%)were retained in all larger-meshed than small-meshed traps,and in all of those traps with escape gaps(by up to 95%)than *** there were no significant cumulative benefits of escape gaps in largermeshed traps(measured by a statistical interaction),there was a trend of fewer unwanted catches *** data support configuring portunid traps with mesh sizes matching the morphology of the smallest legal-sized target ***,simply retroactively fitting escape gaps in existing,smaller-m

We have previously demonstrated the ability of malaria parasites to interfere with specific immune responses. CD4 T cells specific to parasite antigens, but not CD4 T cells specific to an irrelevant antigen, ovalbumin (OVA), are de- leted via apoptosis during malaria infection. It is of interest, therefore, to investigate the immune responses that developed following vaccination with the 19 kDa carboxylterminus of the merozoite surface protein 1 (MSP119) in mice that had previ- ously experienced malaria infection. In this study, pre-exposure of mice to Plasmodium yoelii elicited native anti-MSP119 an- tibody responses, which could be boosted by vaccination with recombinant MSP119 . likewise, infection of MSP119-primed mice with Plasmodium yoelii ( P . yoelii) led to an increase of anti-MSP119 antibodies. MSP119 vaccination of malaria pre- exposed mice or immunization by infection/cure of MSP119-primed mice enabled the mice to survive challenge infection, with the former group having slightly lower parasitaemia. The data suggest that exposure to malaria infection primes a natural im- mune response which can be boosted by vaccination. This information is relevant to the development of a vaccine for use in individuals living in malaria-endemic areas.

Highly efficient nonlinear optical（NLO） materials with well-defined architectures in the wavelength and subwavelength length scales are of particular importance for next generation of integrated photonic circuits. Fluorenone analogues have been demonstrated to be promising candidates as building blocks for assembly of organic NLO materials thanks to their synergistic supramolecular interactions and brilliant optical properties. Here we have studied the polymorphs of a phenylethynyl functionalized fluorenone derivative, and their controlled self-assembly for microstructures with different morphologies. These polymorphic microcrystals exhibit very distinctive NLO properties, highly related to their supramolecular and electronic structures.

In this report,we investigated expression of HPV16 wild type E7(Wt-E7) and two codon modified E7 genes(HB1-E7 and HB2-E7) in three cell *** blot and qRT-PCR analysis showed that both wt and HB E7 genes had similar RNA transcription ***,immunoblotting showed that HB1-E7 and HB2-E7 genes produced E7 proteins at least ten-fold higher than Wt-E7 ***16 E7 significantly inhibited expression of pRb that was associated with cell differentiation in primary human keratinocytes and prevented pRb expression in granular keratinocytes and the formation of a cornified envelope in mice injected with EL4-E7 *** also showed that HPV 16 E7 expression substantially upregulated Cyclin D2 and down-regulated cyclin B1 in primary human keratinocyte in vitro and skin epidermis of mice in vivo,leading to development of skin ***,HPV16 E7 protein dramatically inhibited expression of involucrin(keratinocyte differentiation marker),α-spectrin and β-adducin and disrupted the organization of involucrin filaments,spectrin cytoskeleton and the cytoskeletal structure of adducin in keratinocytes in vitro and in epidermis in vivo associated with *** provided evidence that HPV 16 E7 markedly induced expression of phosphorylated β-adducin(Ser662) and translocated the phosphorylated β-adducin(Ser662) to nucleus in keratinocytes,which may be an important event in the pathogenesis of HPV-induced cervical cancer.

Objectives: To assess the health- related quality- of- life (HRQOL) of children/adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF)- and compare HRQOL in children managed by cystic fibrosis outreach service (CFOS) with those treated in a cystic fibrosis center (CFC). To compare HRQOL of children with CF in Queensland with previously published HRQOL data from the United States and examine the relationship between HRQOL scores and pulmonary function. Study design: Participants were children/adolescents with CF and their parents managed by the royal Children’ s Hospital Queensl and at a CFC or CFOS. Two HRQOL surveys were used: PedsQLTM and Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire (CFQ). Results: There were 91 CFC and 71 CFOS participants with similar demographics. PedsQLTM total summary score was statistically higher in CFOS, P =0.05. There was no significant difference in CFQ scores between groups. Queensland parents reported lower HRQOL for their children compared with US parents (P < 0.01) despite similar pulmonary function. Declining pulmonary function correlated with worse CFQ scores in adolescents, P < 0.05. Conclusions: Children living in regional Queensland reported as good as or slightly better HRQOL compared with children attending a CFC. Parent proxy HRQOL scores were generally low suggesting a reduced perception of HRQOL by parents for their children.
