Dietary carbohydrate intake and risk of type 2 diabetes:a 16-year prospective cohort study

Despite considerable research underscoring the importance of carbohydrate intake in relation to the risk of type 2 diabetes(T2D), a comprehensive assessment of this relationship is currently lacking. We aimed to examine the associations of various types and food sources of dietary carbohydrate intake with the risk of T2D, to evaluate potential effect modification by other factors, including genetic susceptibility,and to explore the potential mediators for such associations. The present study included 161,872 participants of the UK Biobank who were free of prevalent cancer, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes, and had at least one validated 24-h dietary recall assessment. Multivariableadjusted age-stratified Cox proportional hazard regression models were applied to estimate hazard ratios(HRs) and 95% confidence intervals(CI) for the associations of various types and food sources of dietary carbohydrate intake with risk of T2D. During a median follow-up of13.6 years, 4,176 incident cases of T2D were identified. In the multivariable-adjusted models, a greater intake of fiber, carbohydrates from whole grains, and carbohydrates from non-starchy vegetables was significantly associated with a lower risk of T2D(highest vs. lowest quantile, HR [95% CI]=0.70 [0.62–0.79], 0.74 [0.67–0.82], and 0.83 [0.75–0.92], respectively, all P for trend <0.005). In contrast, a higher intake of starch and carbohydrate from starchy vegetables was associated with an increased risk of T2D(highest vs. lowest quantile, HR [95%CI]=1.31 [1.16–1.48] and 1.19 [1.09–1.31], respectively, both P for trend <0.005). Replacing one serving of refined grains or starchy vegetables with an equal amount of whole grains or non-starchy vegetables was associated with 4% to 10% lower risk of T2D(all P values <0.001).The observed associations were generally similar across population subgroups, including individuals with different genetic susceptibility to T2D. Colorectal cancer is a major global cause of morbidity and mortality. Current strategies employed to increase detection of early,curable stages of this disease are contributing to a reduction of the negative health impact from it. While there is a genetic component to the risk of disease,diet and environment are known to have major effects on the risk of an individual for developing the disease. However,there is the potential to reduce the impact of this disease further b y preventing disease develop ment. Biomarkers which can either predict the risk for or early stages of colorectal cancer could allow intervention at a time when prospects could be modified by environmental factors,including lifestyle and diet choices. Thus,such biomarkers could be used to identify high risk individuals who would benefit from lifestyle and dietary interventions to prevent this disease. This review will give an overview on one type of biomarker in the form of micro RNAs,which have the potential to predict an individual's risk for colorectal cancer,as well as providing a highly sensitive and non-invasive warning of disease presence and/or progression. Micro RNA biomarkers which have been studied and whose levels look promising for this purpose include Mi R-18 a,Mi R-21,Mi R-92 a,Mi R-135 b,Mi R-760,Mi R-601. Not only have several individual micro RNAs appeared promising as biomarkers,but panels of these may be even more useful. Furthermore,understanding dietary sources and ways of dietary modulation of these micro RNAs might be fruitful in reducing the incidence and slowing the progression of colorectal cancer.

Background:Immune checkpoint inhibitors play an important role in the treatment of solid tumors, but the currently used immune checkpoint inhibitors targeting programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) show limited clinical efficacy in many breast cancers. B7H3 has been widely reported as an immunosuppressive molecule, but its immunological function in breast cancer patients remains unclear.Methods:We analyzed the expression of B7H3 in breast cancer samples using data from the cancer Genome Atlas Program (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. MicroRNAs were selected using the TarBase, miRTarBase, and miRBase databases. The regulatory role of the microRNA hsa-miR-214-3p on B7H3 was investigated through dual-luciferase reporter assays, which identified the specific action sites of interaction. The expression levels of B7H3 and hsa-miR-214-3p in human breast cancer tissues and adjacent normal tissues were quantified using Western blotting and quantitative PCR (qPCR). experiments were performed to observe the effects of modulating the expression of B7H3 or hsa-miR-214-3p on breast cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis. Additionally, the regulatory impact of hsa-miR-214-3p on B7H3 was examined. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and flow cytometry were employed to assess the effects of co-cultured breast cancer cells and normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) on immune cells and associated cytokines.Results:In breast cancer tissues, the expression level of B7H3 is inversely correlated with that of hsa-miR-214-3p, as well as with the regulatory effects on breast cancercell behavior. Hsa-miR-214-3p was found to inhibit breast cancer cell growth by downregulating B7H3. The contribution of a non-governmental organisation’s Community Based Tuberculosis Care programme to case finding in Myanmar:trend over time

Active case-finding for tuberculosis by mobile teams in Myanmar:yield and treatment outcomes

Background:Since 2005,the Myanmar National Tuberculosis programme(NTP)has been implementing active case finding(ACF)activities involving mobile teams in hard-to-reach *** study revealed the contribution of mobile team activities to total tuberculosis(TB)case detection,characteristics of TB patients detected by mobile teams and their treatment ***:This was a descriptive study using routine programme data between October 2014 and December *** team activities were a one-stop service and included portable digital chest radiography(CXR)and microscopy of two sputum *** algorithm of the case detection included screening patients by symptoms,then by CXR followed by sputum microscopy for *** patients were started on treatment and followed until a final outcome was ***:A total of 9349 people with symptoms suggestive of TB were screened by CXR,with an uptake of 96.6%.Of those who were meant to undergo sputum smear microscopy,51.4%had sputum ***,504 TB patients were identified by the mobile teams and the overall contribution to total TB case detection in the respective townships was 25.3%.Among total cases examined by microscopy,6.4%were sputum smear positive *** success rate was high as 91.8%in study townships compared to national rate 85%(2014 cohort).Conclusions:This study confirmed the feasibility and acceptability of ACF by mobile teams in hard-to-reach contexts,especially when equipped with portable,digital CXR machines that provided immediate ***,the follow-up process of sputum examination created a significant barrier to confirmation of the *** order to optimize the ACF through mobile team activity,future ACF activities were needed to be strengthened one stop service including molecular diagnostics or provision of sputum cups to all presumptive TB cases prior to CXR and testing if CXR suggestive of TB.

Magnetic mitohormesis:A non-invasive therapy for inflammatory disorders?

Role of Ca^(2+) on Growth of Brassica campestris *** ***(L.) Czern & Coss under Na^+ Stress

Root and shoot growth of Brassica campestris L. and B. juncea increased significantly （P 〈 0.01） with enhanced Ca2＋ treatment along with 60 mM NaCl in the root medium. The maximum fresh mass of shoot and root in *** was recorded at 10 mM Ca2＋ concentration. The relative growth rate of shoot of both species reached its maximum at 8 mM of Ca2＋ concentration. Average rate of Ca2＋ intake （lCa） was higher in B. juncea than 6. campestris. In B. juncea, the average transport of Ca2＋ to shoot increased by 19%, 38%, 119%, 125% and 169% compared with the control. Furthermore specific utilization rate of Ca2＋ was higher in B. juncea than B. campestris. In B. campestris it increased by 9%, 32%, 41% and 59% at 4, 6, 8, and 10 mM of calcium in comparison to 2 mM Ca2＋ treatment. At 4, 6, 8 and 10 mM of Ca2＋ application, the increase in the leaf area ratio was 10,17, 23 and 30%, respectively. In the shoot and root portions of B. campestris and ***, Ca2＋ had a linear relationship with potassium and sulfur, whereas it was in antagonism with sodium ion.
