Determination of functional fitness age in women aged 50 and older

Background: The construction of useful and attainable indicators of fitness assessment deserves special attention in clinical practice. We aimed to construct an indicator of the functional fitness age(FFA) of women aged 50 and older by an equation using fitness outcomes and its correlation with chronological age(CA) and to analyze the external validity of our results by comparing our sample to ***: Participants(n=459, age: 70.3 ± 7.9 years, mean ± SD) were evaluated using the Senior Fitness Test battery. We applied a multiple regression and a subsequent Holt's exponential smoothing to analyze the ***: We obtained a statistically significant expression of F(6, 452) = 328.384; p in which the coefficients of the equation explain81% of variability(R_(corrected)~2 = 0.813). The equation correlates fitness assessment in women aged 50 and over with regards to CA:FFA = 40.146 + 0.350 X CS(stand)-0.714 X AC(rep)-0.110 X ST(step)-0.177 X CSR(cm)-0.101 X BS(cm) + 8.835 X FUG(s) where CS means chair stand test, AC. means arm curl test, ST means 2-min step test, CSR means chair sit-and-reach test, BS means back scratch test, FUG means 8-foot up-and-go test. We compared this index with percentiles distribution from our sample and from other ***: We suggest the use of FFA as a valid indicator of fitness in adult and senior women as well as a useful motivational tool to undertake exercise programs.

Microwave-Assisted Hydrolysis of Hemicellulose over Sulfonated Catalysts

Sulfonated catalysts based on zirconia (SO3H-ZrO2), silica (SO3H-SBA-15) and zeolite (SO3H-ZSM-5) were studied in the catalytic hydrolysis reaction of hemicellulose in a microwave reactor. The prepared catalysts were characterized by various techniques (XRD, N2 physisorption at 77 K, SEM, TEM and NH3-TPD). The obtained results reveal that despite the differences in their structural and textural properties, the ZrO2, Al-SBA-15 and H-ZSM-5 supports show similar conversions. Doping supports with sulfonate species created hydrogen bonds between SO3H groups and increased the amount of weak acid sites, which enhanced the hydrolysis of hemicellulose. SO3H- ZSM-5 showed the highest catalytic activity followed by SO3H-SBA-15 while SO3H-ZrO2 exhibited a poor conversion. Furthermore, the catalytic hydrolysis of the hemicellulose leads to several interesting products, such as formic acid, acetic acid, lactic acid and xylan. The correlation between the catalytic performances and the acidic properties of the different samples indicates that the best catalytic performances were obtained with the least acidic solids and especially when the density of strong acid sites decreases.

Thou shalt not get fat: Medical representations and self-images of obesity in a Mediterranean society

This paper examines the link between lipophobia and representations and experiences of obesity in Catalonia (Spain) from two points of view: that of the physicians and other health professionals who diagnose and treat obesity as an illness, and that of their patients, especially those between adolescence and early adulthood. The qualitative data demonstrate that the increasing social rejection of fat people can be traced not only to moralizing discourses on “excessive” food consumption or the commodification of slenderness and health, but also to the recent definition of obesity as a disease. The medicalization of fatness, far from helping to destigmatize obesity, is becoming a way of resignifying it in moral terms. While doctors’ and patients’ perspectives diverge in some ways, they converge in others. in this text, i focus on the points of convergence arguing that biomedical understandings of obesity and overweight are characterized by a profound ambivalence. Young patients are regarded both as innocent victims of a permissive consumer society, and guilty of not following doctors’ orders. Although the family is held accountable for overweight or obesity in children, as young people become more independent, guilt is individualized and environmental causes are limited to inappropriate diet and insufficient exercise. Most narratives of young people with weight problems reflect similar ideas about the causes and the responsibility for obesity. Their acceptance of the basic premise that deviating from weight standards and rules for healthy eating are voluntary actions leads them to lose faith in themselves. The stigmatization of obesity thus becomes a vicious circle: the obese acceptance—even consider normal—the incriminations leveled at them, and blame themselves for their situation and their inability to prevent it.

A continuous-wave Nd:KGd(WO4)2 single-longitudinal-mode laser is demonstrated with Fabry-Perot etalons in a simple linear *** thermal lens effect is dramatically lowered by propagating the laser beam along the‘athermal’direction inside the laser crystal,which is very beneficial to removing the heat generated in the mode selection *** maximum single-longitudinal-mode output power obtained is 64.8 mW at incident pump power of 4.7 W,corresponding to an optical conversion efficiency of 1.3%and a slope efficiency of 1.7%.

in existing software registration schemes, the privacy of users is not taken into account and may be in the risks of abuses. in this paper, we proposed a novel software registration system which can greatly reduce unauthorized use of software while keeping the privacy of users. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first system that the privacy of users is guaranteed in software registration. Our system enjoys a modular design and can be implemented by any secure iD-based partially blind signature scheme. Furthermore, the proposal allows flexible registration information definition. This feature makes our scheme flexible and practical for more software registration applications.

A Feature Selection Strategy to Optimize Retinal Vasculature Segmentation

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a complication of diabetesmellitus thatappears in the retina. Clinitians use retina images to detect DR pathologicalsigns related to the occlusion of tiny blood vessels. Such occlusion brings adegenerative cycle between the breaking off and the new generation of thinnerand weaker blood vessels. This research aims to develop a suitable retinalvasculature segmentation method for improving retinal screening proceduresby means of computer-aided diagnosis systems. The blood vessel segmentationmethodology relies on an effective feature selection based on SequentialForward Selection, using the error rate of a decision tree classifier in theevaluation function. Subsequently, the classification process is performed bythree alternative approaches: artificial neural networks, decision trees andsupport vector machines. The proposed methodology is validated on threepublicly accessible datasets and a private one provided by Hospital Sant Joanof Reus. in all cases we obtain an average accuracy above 96% with a sensitivityof 72% in the blood vessel segmentation process. Compared with the state-ofthe-art, our approach achieves the same performance as other methods thatneed more computational *** method significantly reduces the numberof features used in the segmentation process from 20 to 5 dimensions. Theimplementation of the three classifiers confirmed that the five selected featureshave a good effectiveness, independently of the classification algorithm.

The tremendous impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the global aviation industry has led to many cases of airline financial distress and *** Asia–Pacific region(APAC)contains more than half of the world’s population,and its airlines had the highest profit margin of any *** this study,we investigate whether corporate sustainability practice can reduce the financial distress risk of air carriers,and,if so,what would the effect be in APAC?We first examine the relationship between environmental,social,and governance disclosure and the likelihood of financial distress of airlines as measured by the Altman Z″-***,we analyze the moderating role of being an APAC airline in this *** findings support the claim that implementing environmental actions may increase financial distress risk,and by improving social and governance activities,airlines can mitigate the risk of financial *** negative influence of the environmental pillar and the positive influence of the social pillar can be smaller for APAC *** study provides empirical evidence of the influence of environmental,social,and governance(ESG)on the likelihood of financial distress in the airline ***,we analyze the moderating role of being an APAC airline in the relationship between sustainability and financial *** study has significant implications for executives,managers,and policymakers in the aviation industry on ESG strategy decisions and the general issue of sustainability.

An improvement on the parameter extraction technique for compact device models based on Genetic algorithms is presented. The use of fuzzy logic based rules to direct the evolution of the genetic algorithm enhances the convergence and the physical meaning of the parameters is preserved. Another advantage of this method is that the fuzzy rules can be applied just to a reduced set of model parameters. The parameter extraction procedure is applied to find the parameters in an OTFT model from a set of experimental data. Agreement between measured and modeled DC i-V characteristics is excellent. Moreover, the parameter values obtained with this procedure agree remarkably with the ones obtained by a direct extraction method
