Human bocavirus in children hospitalized for acute respiratory tract infection in rome

Background The role of human bocavirus (HBoV) as a respiratory pathogen has not been fulfilled *** aimed to describe clinical and serological characteristics of children with HBoV hospitalized for acute respiratory tract infection and to evaluate whether differences occur between HBoV alone and in *** We retrospectively reviewed data from 60 children (median age of 6.2 months,range 0.6-70.9) hospitalized for acute respiratory symptoms,with HBoV detected from a respiratory sample,using a reverse transcriptase-PCR for 14 respiratory viruses (including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV),influenza virus A and B,human coronavirus OC43,229E,NL-63 and HUK1,adenovirus,rhinovirus,parainfluenza virus 1-3,and human metapneumovirus).Results HBoV was detected alone in 29 (48.3%) patients,while in co-infection with other viruses in 31 patients (51.7%),with a peak between December and *** the 60 patients,34 were bronchiolitis,19 wheezing,3 pneumonia,2 upper respiratory tract infection,and 2 whooping *** children (11.6%) required admission to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for respiratory *** differences was observed in age,family history for atopy and/or asthma,clinical presentations,chest X-ray,or laboratory findings in children with HBoV alone *** viral *** was the most frequently co-detected virus (61.3%).When compared with HBoV detection alone,the co-detection of RSV and HBoV was associated with male sex (P=0.013),younger age (P=0.01),and lower blood neutrophil count (P=0.032).Conclusions HBoV can be detected alone and in co-infection respiratory samples of children with an acute respiratory tract infection.A cause-effect relationship between HBoV and respiratory infection is not clear,so further studies are needed to clarify this point.

Methodology and evidence from a case study in rome to increase pedestrian safety along home-to-school routes

Home-to-school routes are very sensitive areas: they represent, for children, a learning tool for their everyday activities, but if poorly designed, maintained and equipped they can expose them to traffic risks. Sidewalks' inappropriate level of service and poor maintenance, especially, are main factors contributing to walking unsuitability, thus to poor comfort and safety levels for young pedestrians, and more in general for all the vulnerable non-motorized road users. This paper deals with a methodology specifically developed to highlight the quality of the urban environment where the home-to-school routes are located, according to four main criteria: wellbeing, usage, appearance, and safety and security. Each criterion is associated with a checklist including the most relevant features to assess, with a focus on maintenance as a key parameter to create safe and comfortable routes to school. An application, a case study in rome, where the lack of regular maintenance results into a network of unsafe sidewalks, is also presented, analyzing three different areas where a number of schools are located. Detours when approaching school premises were surveyed, due to the levels of distresses and linked to the poor comfort and safety levels. As the mutual influence of built environment over road safety and maintenance requirements for home-to-school paths is not largely investigated thus far, the paper's goal is to provide advanced knowledge for studies and applications further afield.

The framework of the Italian restoration doctrine is based on the reception and transmission of the memory of the past. However, interventions in modern architecture represent a radical drift in the sense that they mostly consist of reconstructions, refurbishments, and renovations. Such work disresards the sense of value acknowledgment that is implicit in architectural conservation and neglects the importance of material conservation. The uneven fortune of the School of Mathematics at rome＇s University Campus illustrates this situation. This predicament is similar to that of many other modern buildinss that have been declared ＂monuments＂ by mouth but are actually bent to listless and insensible use, mistreated, and hardly maintained. The recent work carded out at the School of Mathematics proves that interventions on modern buildings are mostly insensitive to their true significance and are often carded out in extreme urgency for mere practical reasons, if not for political opportunities. Modern buildings can be true architectural monuments that express great esthetic potentials and retain notable historical weight in the history of architecture; therefore, they should be regarded as highly representative of our recent past and maintained as such.

Relationship between Atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub>Concentration and Vegetation in a Hospital Area: The Policlinico Umberto I in rome

The capability of the plants growing in the Policlinico Umberto I, one of the most important hospitals in rome, to lower carbon dioxide (CO2) and air temperature was analyzed. The CO2 concentration inside and outside the hospital and traffic density in the streets surrounding the area was monitored monthly. Measurements of structural plant traits were carried out. The highest CO2 concentration was monitored in winter-spring (425 ± 8 ppm, mean value) when traffic density peaks, decreasing by 17% in summer. During the day-time, the highest CO2 concentration (433 ± 61 ppm, mean value) was measured in the first hours of the morning (9:00) decreasing by 12% from 11.00 to 13.00 in relationship with traffic density decreasing (p 0.05). Among the greening present in the hospital area, the “group of trees” plays an important role in lowering CO2 concentration compared to meadows. Moreover, outside the Policlinico air temperature was, on average, 17% higher compared to the inside. The results show the effectiveness of plants in improving air quality and suggest that greening traits may be used to realise an inventory available for tree planting programs to ameliorate the quality of life.

Tree Role in Environmental Quality Amelioration of the Sapienza University of rome Campus

The capability of trees growing in the Campus of Sapienza University of rome to improve environmental quality was analyzed. Measurements of CO2 concentration, air temperature and humidity, traffic density and noise level were carried out along a transect from streets outside the Campus to sites inside. Moreover, measurements were also carried out at the Experimental Garden placed inside the Campus. In each of the considered sites, diameter at breast height, plant height and carbon stored in the tree aboveground biomass were calculated. Air temperature in summer was 5% lower inside the Campus than in the surrounding streets, while relative humidity increased by 4%. CO2 concentration in winter was 11% lower inside than in the surrounding streets. Carbon stored by trees was 374 Mg to which Pinus pinea, Cedrus deodara, Quercus ilex and Tilia × europaea contributed by 30%, 20%, 18% and 13%, respectively. Moreover, noise level was 36% lower inside than in the surrounding streets.

Carbon Dioxide Sequestration Capability of the Botanical Garden of rome: Environmental and Economic Benefits

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most abundant anthropogenic greenhouse gases contributing to increase air temperature. Urban areas covered by parks, gardens, tree-lined avenues, sports fields, and hedges are important sinks for CO2. Urban green areas should include the Botanical Gardens, taking into consideration their key role in ex situ plant conservation as well as air quality amelioration and social benefits. In such context, the CO2 sequestration capability of the most representative plant collections developing in the Botanical Garden of rome and their influence on microclimate was analyzed. Our results highlight that plant collections have a CO2 sequestration capability of 6947 Mg CO2 year-1. The CO2 sequestration capability and air temperature lowering by plant collections growing in the Botanical Garden have positive effects (p ≤ 0.05) on the surrounding area resulting in 4% CO2 concentration and 1°C air temperature decreasing at 150 m from the centre of the Garden.

Urban areas are a major source of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions because of road traffic and local heating with natural gas, oil or coal. Rome is among the largest European cities (129,000 ha) with a large volume of green areas (69.6% of the total Municipality area). The CO2 sequestration (CS) capability for the greenery extending for about 300 km2 inside the area delimited by the Great Ring Road (GRA) in Rome was calculated combining satellite data with CS data measured in the field. Data from Sentinel-2 were collected and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was computed on a pixel-base. Three plant classes homogeneous in terms of annual NDVI profile were identified: deciduous trees (DT), evergreen trees (ET) and meadows (M) covering an area of 14,142.027 ha within the GRA, of which M had the highest percentage (48%), followed by DT (27%) and ET (25%). The new HaLL of Marcus AureLius in the CapitoLine Museums, Located within the ancient site of Giardino Romano, displays the original statue of the Roman emperor of the 2nd century AD. The idea of extending the CapitoLine Museums by incLuding this site came about in the framework of its general redevelopment.1 The new HaLL is the result of a Long and compLicated process （1988-7005） considering the exceptional importance of the site and the many changes brought to the museum programme during the said period （Figures 1 and 2）.In fact, the new HaLL was originaLLy supposed to display the marbLes of the TempLe of ApoLLo Sosianus, the foundation waLL of the TempLe of CapitoLine Jupiter, embedded within the structures of the PaLazzo CaffareLLi, opposite the Giardino Romano. However, in 1997, the plan for the CapitoLine Museum changed radicaLLy as the statue of Marcus AureLius, which had been restored foLLowing the bLast of a bomb attack in 1979, was determined to be the focus of the HALL. The project finaLLy consisted of a steeL and gLass structure on an eLLiptic plan andshaped around the foundations of the TempLe, with the statue at its center.

Analysis of Energy Saving Achievable through Solar Photovoltaic Systems on School Roofs： A Case of the City of rome

Embracing renewable energy technology makes a lot of sense for the public sectors and schools as it meets the government sustainability goals and provides a financially viable means of achieving carbon savings while offering income potential. This study is aimed to quantify the achievable energy saving by spread use ofphotovoltaic systems on public building stock in the city of rome. The installation of PV （photovoltaic） systems in the historic center depends on the feasibility conditions, generally more complex compared to the cases examined in the consolidated city, because they require compliance with the formal and aesthetic characteristics of the buildings, so the choice must be made between compatible components, which allow to minimize the transformation. The suburbs are characterized by large plane roofs in bad conditions and belonging to isolated buildings, so the useful surface, according to shading condition, offers a big potential for renewable technologies. The research provides an evaluation of maximum production of solar energy and the subsequent energy saving and reduction of greenhouse gasses, using parametric data, and an evaluation of the cost-effectiveness, with a rough calculation of return on investment.
