A new asterosaponin named novaeguinoside A, along with a known saponin, asteronyl pentaglycoside sulfate, was isolated from the starfish Culcita novaeguineae. The new compound was identified to be sodium 6α-O-{β-D-fucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-fucopyranosyl-(1→4)-[β-D- quinovopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-β-D-quinovopyranosyl}-5α-pregn-9(11)-en- 20-one-3β-yl-sulfate by extensive spectral analysis and chemical evidence.

Six new triterpene glycosides, intercedensides D-I (1-6), were isolated from the whole bodies of the sea cucumber Mensamaria intercedens Lampert, which is found in the South China Sea. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis (NMR and ESIMS) and chemical methods. Intercedensides D (1), E (2), G (4), and H (5) have a conjugated double bond system (22Z,24-diene) in the aglycon side chain, while intercedensides F (3) and I (6) have only a single double bond (24, 25) in this same chain. Intercedensides D-H (1-5) showed significant cytotoxicity (ED50 0.96-5.0 mμg/mL) against 10 human tumor cell lines.

Bioassay-guided fractionation of the active n-BuOH extract of the starfish Culcita novaeguineae resulted in the isolation of three new sulfated steroidal glycosides (asterosaponins) 1, 2 and 3, as active compounds causing morphological abnormality of Pyricularia oryzae mycelia. Compounds 1-3 possess the same pentasaccharide moiety, beta-D-fucopyranosyl-(1→2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl- ( 1→4 )-[- beta-D- quinovopyranosyl- ( 1→2 ) ]-beta-D-xylopyranosyl- ( 1→3 )-beta-D-quinovopyranosyl, linked to C-6 of 3beta-sulfated steroidal aglycones and differ from each other in the side chains.
