Nutritional Characterization of Traditional Foods Based on Millet, Sorghum and Cowpea from the North-Central Region of Burkina Faso

The food and nutrition situation in Burkina Faso, like most developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa, is marked by growing food vulnerability. The majority of local dishes are being abandoned in favor of a minority of imported cereal dishes and other ultra-processed foods. This minority of cereal foods is blamed for stunted growth in children, while ultra-processed foods are linked to chronic diseases such as hypertension, certain types of diabetes and cancer. Knowledge of the nutritional value of local foods is needed to determine their nutritional quality. The aim of this study was to determine the nutritional values of local dishes based on millet, sorghum and cowpea in the Centre-North region. The methodology consisted of making an inventory of millet-, sorghum- and cowpea-based dishes using focus groups made up of women and men from three age groups comprising young people, adults and the elderly in the communes of Lebda and Boussouma. The dishes were reproduced, and standard biochemical methods were used for nutritional characterization. A total of 34 dishes were inventoried, including 16 millet/sorghum-based dishes, 8 cowpea-based dishes and 10 dishes composed of millet/sorghum and cowpea or leaves. The mean protein, carbohydrate, ash and iron contents per 100 g DM of the three types of dishes were significantly different (p ≤ 0.05), ranging respectively from 13.61 to 22.63 g, 70.76 to 80.88 g, 1.87 to 5.96 g and 7.67 to 12.06 mg. Those for lipid, energy and zinc were not significantly different, ranging from 5.51 to 6.56 g, from 427 to 433 Kcal and from 2.98 to 3.32 mg respectively. Cowpea-based and mixed dishes cover the nutritional requirements for protein, carbohydrates, iron, zinc and energy recommended for children and adults. The consumption of mixed dishes and cowpea-based dishes could be promoted by nutritional policy to reduce stunting and recommended to obese, hypertensive and diabetic people as part of their diet.

Efficacy and safety of bamlanivimab in patients with COVID-19:A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND Monoclonal antibodies(mAbs)have shown clinical benefits against coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2).Several studies have reported the use of bamlanivimab as a promising treatment option for *** To synthesize the latest evidence for the efficacy and safety of bamlanivimab alone in the treatment of adult patients with *** A literature search was conducted in PubMed,Cochrane Library,Web of Science,medRxiv,and Google Scholar using“SARS-CoV-2”,“COVID-19”,“LY-CoV555”,and“Bamlanivimab”keywords up to January 25,*** quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane bias *** Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software version 3.0 was used to analyze the *** A total of 30 studies involving 47368 patients were included.A significant difference was observed between the bamlanivimab and standard of care/placebo groups in terms of mortality rate[risk ratio(RR)=50,95%confidence interval(CI):0.36-0.70],hospitalization rate(RR=0.51;95%CI:0.39-0.68),and emergency department(ED)visits(RR=0.69;95%CI:0.47-0.99);while the two groups exhibited no significant difference in terms of intensive care unit(ICU)admission(P>0.05).Compared to other mAbs,bamlanivimab was associated with a higher rate of hospitalization(RR=1.44;95%CI:1.07-1.94).However,no significant difference was detected between the bamlanivimab and other mAbs groups in terms of mortality rate,ICU admission,and ED(P>0.05).The incidence of any adverse events was similar between the bamlanivimab and control groups(P>0.05).CONCLUSION Although the results suggest the efficacy and safety of bamlanivimab in COVID-19 patients,further research is required to confirm the efficacy of this drug for the current circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Autotetraploid Carassius auratus is a stable hereditary autotetraploid fish resulting from the hybridization of Carassius auratus red var.(RCC, ♀) × Megalobrama amblycephala(BSB, ♂), containing four sets of RCC chromosomes. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the determination of sex in this species remains largely unknown. Currently, there lacks a full understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing sex determination and specific molecular markers to differentiate sex in this species. In this study, 25,801,677 SNPs(Singlenucleotide polymorphism) and 6,210,306 Indels(insertion-deletion) were obtained from whole-genome resequencing of 100 individuals(including 50 female and 50 male). Further identification confirmed the candidate chromosomes as Chr46B, with the sex-determining region located at Chr46B: 22,500,000-22,800,000 bp. Based on the male-specific insertion(26 bp) within the candidate sex-determining region, a pair of sex-specific molecular markers has been identified. In addition, based on the screening of candidate sex-determining region genes and RT-qPCR validation analysis, ADAM10, AQP9 and tc1a were identified as candidate sex-determining genes. These findings provide a robust foundation for investigating sex determination mechanisms in fish, the evolution of sex chromosomes, and the development of monosex populations.

Simulation of the Ecosystem Productivity Responses to Aerosol Diffuse Radiation Fertilization Effects over the Pan-Arctic during 2001–19

The pan-Arctic is confronted with air pollution transported from lower *** have shown that aerosols help increase plant photosynthesis through the diffuse radiation fertilization effects(DRFEs).While such DRFEs have been explored at low to middle latitudes,the aerosol impacts on pan-Arctic ecosystems and the contributions by anthropogenic and natural emission sources remain less ***,we perform regional simulations at 0.2o×0.2ousing a well-validated vegetation model(Yale Interactive terrestrial Biosphere,YIBs)in combination with multi-source of observations to quantify the impacts of aerosol DRFEs on the net primary productivity(NPP)in the pan-Arctic during *** show that aerosol DRFEs increase pan-Arctic NPP by 2.19 Pg C(12.8%)yr^(-1)under clear-sky conditions,in which natural and anthropogenic sources contribute to 8.9% and 3.9%,*** all-sky conditions,such DRFEs are largely dampened by cloud to only 0.26 Pg C(1.24%)yr^(-1),with contributions of 0.65% by natural and 0.59% by anthropogenic *** aerosols cause a positive NPP trend of 0.022% yr^(-1)following the increased fire activities in the *** contrast,anthropogenic aerosols induce a negative trend of-0.01% yr^(-1)due to reduced emissions from the middle *** trends in aerosol DRFEs show a turning point in the year of 2007 with more positive NPP trends by natural aerosols but negative NPP trends by anthropogenic aerosols *** affected by modeling uncertainties,this study suggests a likely increasing impact of aerosols on terrestrial ecosystems in the pan-Arctic under global warming.

Numerical Sensitivity Studies on Effects of Ice Nucleating Processes on Electrification in Thunderstorms

This study employed numerical simulations to explore the impact of varying ice nucleation processes on the microphysics and electrification within thunderstorm clouds.A two-dimensional cumulus model,incorporating both noninductive and inductive charge separation schemes,was *** findings revealed that the freezing nucleation mechanism significantly influenced the microphysical development,electrification,and charge structure of *** freezing generated a large quantity of small ice crystals near the cloud tops,which were primarily responsible for the development of positive charge regions through a non-inductive charging ***,heterogeneous freezing resulted in larger ice crystals,enhancing graupel formation and leading to a more rapid and intense charge separation rate of around-15°*** crystals formed heterogeneously and charged negatively during the development stage,resulting in an inverted dipole charge *** both immersion and homogeneous freezing processes were considered,the competition between these two distinct freezing processes resulted in reduced cloud water content and weaker *** conditions of low cloud water content at lower storm levels,graupel particles were negatively charged through non-inductive charging,causing the charge structure to quickly revert to a normal dipole structure.

Background:Prenatal and postnatal factors may have joint effects on cardiovascular health,and we aimed to assess the joint association of birth weight and ideal cardiovascular health metrics(ICVHMs)prospectively in adulthood with incident cardiovascular disease(CVD).Methods:In the UK Biobank,227,833 participants with data on ICVHM components and birth weight and without CVD at baseline were *** ICVHMs included smoking,body mass index,physical activity,diet information,total cholesterol,blood pressure,and hemoglobin *** Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the hazard ratios(HRs)and 95%confidence intervals(CIs)in men and ***:Over a median follow-up period of 13.0 years(2,831,236 person-years),we documented 17,477 patients with incident *** with participants with birth weights of 2.5-4.0 kg,the HRs(95%CIs)of CVD among those with low birth weights was 1.08(1.00-1.16)in men and 1.23(1.16-1.31)in *** association between having a birth weight<2.5 kg and CVD risk in men was more prominent for those aged<50 years than for those of older age(P for interaction=0.026).Lower birth weight and non-ideal cardiovascular health metrics were jointly related to an increased risk of *** with birth weights<2.5 kg and ICVHMs score 0-1 had the highest risk of incident CVD(HR[95%CI]:3.93[3.01-5.13]in men;4.24[3.33-5.40]in women).The joint effect(HR[95%CI]:1.36[1.17-1.58])could be decomposed into 24.7%(95%CI:15.0%-34.4%)for a lower birth weight,64.7%(95%CI:56.7%-72.6%)for a lower ICVHM score,and 10.6%(95%CI:2.7%-18.6%)for their additive interaction in ***:Birth weight and ICVHMs were jointly related to CVD *** a normal birth weight and ideal ICVHMs may reduce the risk of CVD,and a simultaneous improvement of both prenatal and postnatal factors could further prevent additional cases in women.
