Boosting Multi-modal Ocular Recognition via Spatial Feature Reconstruction and Unsupervised Image Quality Estimation

In the daily application of an iris-recognition-at-a-distance(IAAD)system,many ocular images of low quality are acquired.As the iris part of these images is often not qualified for the recognition requirements,the more accessible periocular regions are a good complement for recognition.To further boost the performance of IAAD systems,a novel end-to-end framework for multi-modal ocular recognition is proposed.The proposed framework mainly consists of iris/periocular feature extraction and matching,unsupervised iris quality assessment,and a score-level adaptive weighted fusion strategy.First,ocular feature reconstruction(OFR)is proposed to sparsely reconstruct each probe image by high-quality gallery images based on proper feature maps.Next,a brand new unsupervised iris quality assessment method based on random multiscale embedding robustness is proposed.Different from the existing iris quality assess-ment methods,the quality of an iris image is measured by its robustness in the embedding space.At last,the fusion strategy exploits the iris quality score as the fusion weight to coalesce the complementary information from the iris and periocular regions.Extensive experi-mental results on ocular datasets prove that the proposed method is obviously better than unimodal biometrics,and the fusion strategy can significantly improve therecognition performance.

The development of space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN) requires sophisticated satellite Internet emulation tools that can handle complex, dynamic topologies and offer in-depth analysis. Existing emulation platforms struggle with challenges like the need for detailed implementation across all network layers, real-time response, and scalability. This paper proposes a digital twin system based on microservices for satellite Internet emulation,namely Plotinus,which aims to solve these problems. Plotinus features a modular design, allowing for easy replacement of the physical layer to emulate different aerial vehicles and analyze channel interference. It also enables replacing of path computation methods to simplify testing and deploying algorithms. In particular, Plotinus allows for real-time emulation with live network traffic,enhancing practical network models. The evaluation result shows Plotinus’s effective emulation of dynamic satellite networks with real-world devices. Its adaptability for various communication models and algorithm testing highlights Plotinus’s role as a vital tool for developing and analyzing SAGIN systems, offering a cross-layer,real-time,and scalable digital twin system.

Iris biometrics is a phenotypic biometric trait that has proven to be agnostic to human natural physiological changes.research on iris biometrics has progressed tremendously,partly due to publicly available iris databases.Various databases have been available to researchers that address pressing iris biometric challenges such as constraint,mobile,multispectral,synthetics,long-distance,contact lenses,liveness detection,etc.However,these databases mostly contain subjects of Caucasian and Asian docents with very few Africans.Despite many investigative studies on racial bias in face biometrics,very few studies on iris biometrics have been published,mainly due to the lack of racially diverse large-scale databases containing sufficient iris samples of Africans in the public domain.Furthermore,most of these databases contain a relatively small number of subjects and labelled images.This paper proposes a large-scale African database named Chinese Academy of Sciences institute of Automation(CASIA)-Iris-Africa that can be used as a complementary database for the iris recognition community to mediate the effect of racial biases on Africans.The database contains 28717 images of 1023 African subjects(2046 iris classes)with age,gender,and ethnicity attributes that can be useful in demographically sensitive studies of Africans.Sets of specific application protocols are incorporated with the database to ensure the database’s variability and scalability.Performance results of some open-source state-of-the-art(SOTA)algorithms on the database are presented,which will serve as baseline performances.The relatively poor performances of the baseline algorithms on the proposed database despite better performance on other databases prove that racial biases exist in these iris recognition algorithms.

In many practical applications, such as poker, chess, drug interdiction, cybersecurity, and national defense, players often have adversarial stances, i.e., the selfish actions of each player inevitably or intentionally inflict loss or wreak havoc on other players. Therefore, adversarial games are important in realworld applications. However, only special adversarial games, such as Bayesian games, are reviewed in the literature. In this respect, this study aims to provide a systematic survey of three main game models widely employed in adversarial games, i.e., zero-sum normal-form and extensive-form games, Stackelberg(security) games, and zero-sum differential games, from an array of perspectives, including basic knowledge of game models,(approximate) equilibrium concepts, problem classifications, research frontiers,(approximate) optimal strategy-seeking techniques, prevailing algorithms, and practical applications. Finally, promising future research directions are also discussed for relevant adversarial games.

The standards within the global steel industry are constantly advancing, necessitating increasingly rigorous quality control protocols during the continuous casting process. Central to the challenges faced in this domain are persistent defects such as central segregation, V-shaped segregation, and center porosity, which significantly impede the production of high-caliber steel products. The discipline of electromagnetic metallurgy has emerged as a critical solution in reducing these defects, thereby enhancing the efficiency and stability of continuous casting operations. Its demonstrated effectiveness has led to its widespread implementation across global and domestic steel production industries. This paper aims to deliver a comprehensive examination of electromagnetic metallurgy's impact on the final stages of solidification in continuous casting, along with its contributions to the heating and purification processes within the tundish. Additionally, it will explore the potential advancements and applications of this technology in the evolving sphere of continuous casting.

The early determination of disease-related biomarkers can significantly improve the survival rate of patients.Thus,a series of explorations for new diagnosis technologies,such as optical and electrochemical methods,have been devoted to life and health monitoring.Organic thin-film transistor(OTFT),as a state-of-the-art nano-sensing technology,has attracted significant attention from construction to application owing to the merits of being label-free,low-cost,facial,and rapid detection with multi-parameter responses.Nevertheless,interference from non-specific adsorption is inevitable in complex biological samples such as body liquid and exhaled gas,so the reliability and accuracy of the biosensor need to be further improved while ensuring sensitivity,selectivity,and stability.Herein,we overviewed the composition,mechanism,and construction strategies of OTFTs for the practical determination of disease-related biomarkers in both body fluids and exhaled gas.The results show that the realization of bio-inspired applications will come true with the rapid development of high-effective OTFTs and related devices.

An anti-aliasing filtering of quantum images in spatial domain using a pyramid structure

As a part of quantum image processing,quantum image filtering is a crucial technology in the development of quantum computing.Low-pass filtering can effectively achieve anti-aliasing effects on images.Currently,most quantum image filterings are based on classical domains and grayscale images,and there are relatively fewer studies on anti-aliasing in the quantum domain.This paper proposes a scheme for anti-aliasing filtering based on quantum grayscale and color image scaling in the spatial domain.It achieves the effect of anti-aliasing filtering on quantum images during the scaling process.First,we use the novel enhanced quantum representation(NEQR)and the improved quantum representation of color images(INCQI)to represent classical images.Since aliasing phenomena are more pronounced when images are scaled down,this paper focuses only on the anti-aliasing effects in the case of reduction.Subsequently,we perform anti-aliasing filtering on the quantum representation of the original image and then use bilinear interpolation to scale down the image,achieving the anti-aliasing effect.The constructed pyramid model is then used to select an appropriate image for upscaling to the original image size.Finally,the complexity of the circuit is analyzed.Compared to the images experiencing aliasing effects solely due to scaling,applying anti-aliasing filtering to the images results in smoother and clearer outputs.Additionally,the anti-aliasing filtering allows for manual intervention to select the desired level of image smoothness.

In recent years,molybdenum disulfide（MoS2） has gained significant attention in the scientific community.Fewlayered MoS2demonstrates unique properties and potential applications.However,the synthesis of few-layered and high-purity 1T-MoS2is still a challenge.In this study,we successfully employed a hydrothermal method to synthesize few-layered and high-purity 1T-MoS2.The purity of the material is controlled by a combination of sodium borohydride and ethanol.Notably,the few-layered 1T-MoS2exhibits exceptional performance as a supercapacitor,including the high specific capacitance(250.3 F g-1at a current density of 1 A g-1) and excellent long-trem cycling stability（90.7 % after 5000 cycles）.Meanwhile,the asymmetric device assembled by 6-FL-1TMoS2and active carbon on carbon cloths exhibits excellent flexibility and high energy and power density(23.1μWh cm-2at 600 μW cm-2,55 μWh cm-2at 12000 μW cm-2).This work provides valuable insights into the synthesis of few-layered and high-purity 1T-MoS2,opening up new avenues for further research and applications.

Comprehensive Relation Modelling for Image Paragraph Generation

Image paragraph generation aims to generate a long description composed of multiple sentences,which is different from traditional image captioning containing only one sentence.Most of previous methods are dedicated to extracting rich features from image regions,and ignore modelling the visual relationships.In this paper,we propose a novel method to generate a paragraph by modelling visual relationships comprehensively.First,we parse an image into a scene graph,where each node represents a specific object and each edge denotes the relationship between two objects.Second,we enrich the object features by implicitly encoding visual relationships through a graph convolutional network(GCN).We further explore high-order relations between different relation features using another graph convolutional network.In addition,we obtain the linguistic features by projecting the predicted object labels and their relationships into a semantic embedding space.With these features,we present an attention-based topic generation network to select relevant features and produce a set of topic vectors,which are then utilized to generate multiple sentences.We evaluate the proposed method on the Stanford image-paragraph dataset which is currently the only available dataset for image paragraph generation,and our method achieves competitive performance in comparison with other state-of-the-art(SOTA)methods.
