Applying organic amendment enriches nutrient status of municipal solid waste compost and its application enhances tuber yield and nutrient concentrations of potato

Elevated price of chemical fertilizers and poor nutrient content in conventional organic sources such as municipal solid waste(MSW)compost necessitate the production of nutrient enriched compost which could serve as a potential alternative organic fertilizer *** studied three types of amended compost that were prepared by mixing 20%mustard oil cake(MOC)and 30%poultry manure(PM)or cow dung or sugarcane press mud(SPM)with 50%MSW *** viride was inoculated into every type of *** rate of amended or unamended MSW compost application was 10 t ha^(−1).The use of different amendments improved the nutrient level of MSW compost,of which the N increment was remarkable,ranging from 1.14%N(unamended compost)to 2.9%–3.22%N depending on the types of amendment.A field experiment was conducted to evaluate performances of the amended MSW composts on the yield and nutrient content of potato(variety BARI Alu25).All compost treatments except the sole MSW compost treatment produced significantly higher tuber yields than the sole fertilizer *** press mud based MSW compost+fertilizer treatment produced the highest tuber yield of 31.6 t ha^(−1)(65%increase over 100%fertilizers and 57%increase over 100%compost treatment).The tuber N concentration varied from 0.128%to 0.594%,P from 0.018%to 0.035%,K from 0.213%to 0.313%and S from 0.020%to 0.053%,with the highest result recorded with press mud+fertilizer *** use of amended composts had residual effects on soil N,P,K and S ***,the treatment containing 50%fertilizer+50%compost mixture(MSW:MOC:SPM in a ratio of 5:2:3)performed the best followed by PM amended *** is concluded that integrated use of 10 t ha^(−1) organic amended MSW compost with chemical fertilizers can ensure higher crop yield,nutrient content and sustained soil fertility in nutrient-deficient sub-tropical soil.

Dust emission and wind erosion are widespread phenomena in arid and semi-arid regions,which have far-reaching harmful effects to the *** study aimed to use microbial induced carbonate precipitation(MICP)method with Bacillus sphaericus to reduce soil losses that occur in a dust-producing area due to wind erosion in the Ilam Province,*** samples at the 0-30 cm depth were used and sterilized in an autoclave for 2 h at 121℃ and 103 *** 3 kg soils were weighed and poured in the 35 cm×35 cm×3 cm *** treatments included two levels of ***(0.0 and 0.5 OD),three levels of suspension volume(123,264,and 369 mL),two levels of urea-chloride cementation solution(0.0 and 0.5 M),and two levels of bacterial spray(once and twice spray).After 28 d,soil properties such as soil mass loss,penetration resistance,and aggregate stability were *** results showed a low soil mass loss(1 g)in F_(14)formulation(twice bacterial spray+264 mL suspension volume+without cementation solution)and a high soil mass loss(246 g)in F_(5) formulation(without bacteria+264 mL suspension volume+0.5 M cementation solution).The highest(42.55%)and the lowest(19.47%)aggregate stabilities were observed in F_(16)and F_(7)formulations,respectively,and the highest penetration resistance(3.328 kg/cm^(2))was observed in F_(18) *** to the final results,we recommended the formulation with twice bacterial spray,0.5 M cementation solution,and 269 mL suspension volume as the best combination for soil surface ***,this method is environmentally friendly because it has no adverse effects on soil,water,and plants,thus,it would be an efficient approach to stabilize soil surface.

Effects of land-use types on the vertical distribution of fractions of oxidizable organic carbon on the Loess Plateau, China

The oxidizability of soil organic carbon （SOC） influences soil quality and carbon sequestration. Four fractions of oxidizable organic carbon （very labile （C1）, labile （C2）, less labile （C3） and non-labile （C4）） reflect the status and composition of SOC and have implications for the change and retention of SOC. Studies of the fractions of oxidizable organic carbon （OC） have been limited to shallow soil depths and agroecosystems. How these fractions respond at deep soil depths and in other types of land-use is not clear. In this study, we evaluated the vertical distributions of the fractions of oxidizable organic carbon to a soil depth of 5.0 m in 10 land-use types in the Zhifanggou Watershed on the Loess Plateau, China. Along the soil profile, C1 contents were highly variable in the natural grassland and shrubland I （Caragana microphylla）, C2 and C4 contents were highly variable in the natural grassland and two terraced croplands, respectively, and C3 contents varied little. Among the land-use types, natural grassland had the highest C1 and C2 contents in the 0-0.4 m layers, followed by shrubland I in the 0-0.1 m layer. Natural grassland had the highest C4 contents in the 1.0-4.5 m layers. Natural grassland and shrubland I thus contributed to improve the oxidizability of SOC in shallow soil, and the deep soil of natural grassland has a large potential to sequester SOC on the Loess Plateau.

Synergistic effects of PtFe/CeO_(2)catalysts afford high catalytic performance in selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Selective hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes remains a grand challenge in controlling chemoselectivity up to *** synthesized a series of PtFex/CeO_(2)catalysts,which were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)as well as temperature-programmed-reduction by hydrogen(H2-TPR).The catalytic performance of PtFex/CeO_(2),including cinnamaldehyde(CAL)conversion and selectivity toward cinnamyl alcohol(COL),is improved remarkably by introduction of Fe species in the Pt particles in the selective CAL hydrogenation under mild *** results indicate that the electron transfer from Fe to Pt promotes CAL adsorption,resulting in the enhanced CAL *** the COL selectivity is improved by CAL adsorption via an interaction of C=O group with surface oxygen defect sites because of interaction between PtFe and CeO_(2)*** all,this study may provide some hints to design efficient nano Pt particles for the selective hydrogenation.

The use of woods-run chips in filter socks to control erosion and sedimentation during petroleum development in the Appalachian Basin

Filter socks frequently are used for erosion and sediment perimeter control during oil and gas development activities in the Appalachian Basin of the United *** specify the use of composted wood material for sock *** specification,as opposed to non-composted or fresh wood chips(woods-run),has created inefficiencies during well site *** than use fresh wood chips created during site construction,composted chips must be procured and used as filter sock media for erosion and sedimentation *** woods-run chips could be used as filter sock media instead of composted chips,there could be a significant reduction in energy/capital costs,truck traffic,and disposal *** primary objective of this research project was to compare the effectiveness of woodsrun material versus traditionally composted wood chips in controlling sediment transport as well as other chemical and physical parameters in a laboratory *** significant differences in pH(5.96 versus 6.02) or conductivity(0.029 dS/m versus 0.035 dS/m) were found in sediment laden water filtered through woods-run versus composted chips,***,chip particle sizes were outside the allowable limits for composted sock media,and moisture content also was outside the specified limits for woods-run ***(NO) concentrations were significantly higher in woods-run,while phosphorus(P) and potassium(K) concentrations were greater in composted chips;however none of the N,P,or K concentrations were above the regulatory ***,no difference in the filtering efficiency or time was found between woods-run and composted *** laboratory results indicate that current regulations allowing the use of woods-run chips in all but the highest quality watersheds is justified.

use of Spent Mushroom Substrate as Growing Media for Tomato and Cucumber Seedlings

The aim of this research was to evaluate weathered spent mushroom substrate （SMS）, made from spent Flammulina velutipes mushroom substrate, as a growing medium for nursery seedlings. Two vegetable species, cucumber （Cucumis sativus L. cv. Jinchun No. 2） and tomato （Solanurn lycopersicum L. cv. Mandy）, were grown in 8 media of SMS in various ratios with perlite or vermiculite. A mixed substrate of peat with perlite （1：1; v：v） was used as the control （CK）. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design under greenhouse conditions. Prior to sowing, some physical and chemical properties of the growing media were determined. Results showed that all the mixtures had desirable physical and chemical properties for their use in nursery tomato and cucumber seedlings except for the T4 （SMS：vermiculite = 1：1; v：v） and the T8 （SMS：perlite = 2：1; v：v） mixtures. Compared with the CK, increased plant height, leaf area, fresh weight, dry weight and index of seedling quality were found in the T3 （SMS：vermiculite = 2：1; v：v） and T6 （SMS：perlite = 4：1; v：v） growing media. SMS should be considered as an alternative for the widely used but expensive and resource-limited peat in greenhouse cultivation.

Natural Organic Amendments for Improved Phytoremediation of Polluted soils:A Review of Recent Progress

Environmental pollution caused by metals, radionuclides and organic pollutants affects quality of the biosphere: soil, water and ***, great efforts have been made to reduce, remove or stabilize contaminants in polluted sites. There has been increasing interest in phytoremediation—the use of plants to reduce concentration of pollutants or to render them harmless. This paper provides a brief review of recent progress in the research and practical application of phytoremediation techniques. Improvements in phytoremediation due to utilization of organic amendments, namely, agro- and industrial wastes(such as sugar beet residue, composted sewage sludge or molasses), biochar, humic substances, plant extracts and exudates are discussed, as well as their influences on soil structure and characteristics, plants growth and bioavailability of pollutants. Both plant-assisted phytoremediation and the use of natural materials in the absence of remediating plant are believed to be cost-effective and environmentally friendly approaches for soil cleanup. However,the characterization and quantification of a range of natural materials used in phytoremediation are essential in order to implement these approaches to practice.

Degradation of benzene derivatives in the CuMgFe-LDO/persulfate system:The role of the interaction between the catalyst and target pollutants

A novel insight on the role of interactions between target pollutants and the catalyst in the copper-containing layered double oxide(LDO)-catalyzed persulfate(PS)system was elucidated in the present study.4-Chlorophenol(4-CP),as a representative benzene derivative with a hydroxyl group,was completely removed within 5 min,which was much faster than the reaction of monochlorobenzene(MCB)without a hydroxyl group,with the degradation efficiency of 31.7%in 240 *** the use of radical quenching and surface inhibition experiments,it could be concluded that the interaction between 4-CP and CuMgFe-LDO,rather than free radicals,played a key role in the decomposition of 4-CP,while only the free radicals participated in the MCB degradation *** to electron paramagnetic resonance and Xray photoelectron spectroscopy data,the formation of a Cu(II)-complex between phenolic hydroxyl groups and surface Cu(II)was primarily responsible for the degradation of phenolic compounds,in which PS accepted one electron from the complex and generated sulfate radicals and chelated radical *** chelated radical cations transferred one electron to Cu(Ⅱ)followed by Cu(I)generation and pollutant degradation successively.

Desertification status mapping in MuttumaWatershed by using Random Forest Model

Potential of the Random Forest Model on mapping of different desertification processes was studied in Muttuma watershed of mid-Murrumbidgee river region of New South Wales,*** vulnerability index was developed using climate,terrain,vegetation,soil and land quality indices to identify environmentally sensitive areas for *** Forest Model(RFM)was used to predict the different desertification processes such as soil erosion,salinization and waterlogging in the watershed and the information needed to train classification algorithms was obtained from satellite imagery interpretation and ground truth *** factors(evaporation,rainfall,temperature),terrain factors(aspect,slope,slope length,steepness,and wetness index),soil properties(pH,organic carbon,clay and sand content)and vulnerability indices were used as an explanatory *** accuracy and kappa index were calculated for training and testing *** recorded an overall accuracy rate of 87.7%and 72.1%for training and testing sites,*** found larger discrepancies between overall accuracy rate and kappa index for testing datasets(72.2%and 27.5%,respectively)suggesting that all the classes are not predicted *** prediction of soil erosion and no desertification process was good and poor for salinization and water-logging ***,the results observed give a new idea of using the knowledge of desertification process in training areas that can be used to predict the desertification processes at unvisited areas.
