Functional correlates of skull shape in Chiroptera:feeding and echolocation adaptations

Morphological,functional,and behavioral adaptations of bats are among the most diverse within mammals.A strong association between bat skull morphology and feeding behavior has been suggested ***,morphological variation related to other drivers of adaptation,in particular echolocation,remains *** assessed variation in skull morphology with respect to ecology(diet and emission type)and function(bite force,masticatory muscles and echolocation characteristics)using geometric morphometrics and comparative *** study suggests that variation in skull shape of 10 bat families is the result of adaptations to broad dietary categories and sound emission types(oral or nasal).Skull shape correlates with echolocation parameters only in a subsample of insectivorous species,possibly because they(almost)entirely rely on this sensory system for locating and capturing *** emitting low frequencies are characterized by a ventrally tilted rostrum,a trait not associated with feeding *** result questions the validity of a trade-off between feeding and echolocation *** study advances understanding of the relationship between skull morphology and specific features of echolocation and suggests that evolutionary constraints due to echolocation may differ between different groups within the Chiroptera.

Paleoecology of Oligocarpia gothanii Halle from the Middle Permian of Southeastern Shanxi,North China

Fossil ferns are abundant and diverse in the Permian Cathaysian Flora of Shanxi, North China. Although plants assemblages of the Carboniferous and Permian have been extensively investigated, their palaeoecology and especially the paleoecology of ferns has not been studied in detail. Recent reinvestigation of Oligocarpia gothanii has revealed its growth habit and cloning reproduction strategy, but most previous studies lack integrated sedimentological and taphonomic data. In this study, new materials of O. gothanii have been collected from a floodplain setting in the middle Permian Lower Shihhotse Formation of southeastern Shanxi. These plant fossils were found in a lenticular claystone associated with rooting structures. They are characterized by aphlebia at the base of the penultimate rachis. Sedimentological, taphonomic and morphological analyses were conducted to understand the growth habit and ecology of the fern. The result indicates that the Oligocarpia gothanii had a prostrate, ground cover growth habit, and was dominant in pioneer floras that colonized disturbed floodplains.

产自缅甸克钦的琥珀精美保存了各类动物化石,为深入研究白垩纪中期(约99 Ma)的生态系统提供了一个独特的窗口.克钦琥珀中甚至发现了半水生动物等其他琥珀产地暂无报道的罕见类群.最新研究表明,除了与淡水栖息地密切相关的众多陆生昆虫等类群以外,克钦琥珀中还保存了菊石类、双壳类、海百合及珊瑚等海生动物类群.这一组合表明,克钦琥珀记录了当时多种类型的动物栖息环境,如:在边缘海洋环境(类似红树林的环境)中生长着盛产琥珀的森林(很可能是柏树林),而琥珀沉积物在形成后便逐渐堆积于海湾或河口等近海海洋环境中.本文使用光学显微镜、同步辐射和micro-CT等研究手段,报道和描述克钦琥珀中产出的虾类动物,并从古生态学和分类学的角度进行探讨.在这项工作之前,仅从墨西哥恰帕斯州的中新世琥珀中发现过一个虾类样品.本文报道的标本是克钦琥珀中产出的首个十足类甲壳动物,在数量和种类上丰富了该产地淡水甲壳动物的产出,并将对琥珀中虾类动物的记录提前了大约8000万年.
