Turpentine is a renewable and resourceful forest product.The deep processing and utilization of turpentine,particularly its primary componentβ-pinene,has garnered widespread attention.This study aimed to synthesize 40 derivatives ofβ-pinene,including nopinone,3-cyanopyridines of nopinone,myrtanyl acid,myrtanyl acylthioureas,and myrtanyl amides.We assessed the antiviral activities of theseβ-pinene derivatives against influenza virus A/Puerto Rico/8/34(H1N1)using the 3-(4,5-dimetylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide method.Theβ-pinene derivatives were used before and after cellular infection with the influenza virus to evaluate their preventive and therapeutic effects against the H1N1 virus.The results showed that only compound 10o exhibited a preventive effect against the H1N1 virus with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration(IC50)value of 47.6μmol/L.Among the compounds,4e,4i,and 4l demonstrated therapeutic effects against cellular infection,with compound 4e displaying the most potent therapeutic effect(IC50=17.5μmol/L),comparable to the positive control ribavirin.These findings indicated that certainβ-pinene derivatives exhibited in vitro antiviral activity against the H1N1 influenza A virus,warranting further investigation as potential anti-influenza agents.

Construction of apricot variety search engine based on deep learning

Apricot has a long history of cultivation and has many varieties and types. The traditional variety identification methods are timeconsuming and labor-consuming, posing grand challenges to apricot resource management. Tool development in this regard will help researchers quickly identify variety information. This study photographed apricot fruits outdoors and indoors and constructed a dataset that can precisely classify the fruits using a U-net model (F-score:99%), which helps to obtain the fruit's size, shape, and color features. Meanwhile, a variety search engine was constructed, which can search and identify variety from the database according to the above features. Besides, a mobile and web application (ApricotView) was developed, and the construction mode can be also applied to other varieties of fruit trees.Additionally, we have collected four difficult-to-identify seed datasets and used the VGG16 model for training, with an accuracy of 97%, which provided an important basis for ApricotView. To address the difficulties in data collection bottlenecking apricot phenomics research, we developed the first apricot database platform of its kind (ApricotDIAP, http://***/) to accumulate, manage, and publicize scientific data of apricot.

The Combination of Achnatherum inebrians Extracts and Soil Microorganisms Inhibited Seed Germination and Seedling Growth in Elymus nutans

In a greenhouse experiment,the effects of soil microorganisms and extracts of Achnatherum inebrians on the seed germination and seedling growth of Elymus nutans were studied.The results showed that both the extracts from aboveground and belowground parts of A.inebrians signiﬁcantly inhibited the germination rate,germination potential,germination index,vigor index,seedling height,root length,and fresh weight of E.nutans,but increased malondialdehyde content,catalase,peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity of E.nutans seedlings(p<0.05).The allelopathy of aqueous extracts of the aboveground parts of A.inebrians was stronger than that of the pre-cipitates.Aqueous extracts of the aboveground parts of A.inebrians decreased seed germination rate,germination potential,germination index,vigor index,seedling length,root length,and seedling fresh weight by 10.45%-74.63%,24.18%-32.50%,19.03%-73.36%,37.83%-88.41%,21.42%-53.14%,2.65%-40.21%,and 20.45%-61.36%,respectively,and malondialdehyde content,peroxidase,catalase,and superoxide dismutase activity increased by 8.09%-62.24%,27.83%-86.47%,22.90%-93.17%,and 11.15%-75.91%,respectively.The above indexes were higher in live soil than in sterilized soil.Soil microorganisms increased the allelopathy of A.inebrians.The seed germination rate,germination potential,germination index,vigor index,seedling length,and seedling fresh weight of E.nutans planted in live soil decreased by 8.22%-48.48%,10.00%-51.85%,8.19%-53.26%,16.43%-60.03%,12.91%-28.81%,and 9.09%-22.86%compared with sterilized soil,respectively.Malondialdehyde content,peroxidase,catalase,and superoxide dismutase activity of E.nutans planted in live soil increased by 53.91%-81.06%,15.71%-57.34%,33.33%-86.31%,and 9.78%-52.51%compared with sterilized soil,respectively.The existence of soil microorganisms enhanced the allelopathy of the secondary metabolites of A.inebrians.A combination of microorganisms and aqueous extracts from the aboveground parts of A.inebrians had the strongest allelopathic effect on E.nutans.

Infant call structure should have evolved to elicit maximum maternal attention and investment.Neonates of giant pandas produce three types of vocalizations reported to be vitally important in the context of mother–infant communications.However,how cubs,0–15 days old,communicate with their mothers to elicit maternal care remains unknown.We analyzed 12 different call parameters of 3475 squawks,1355 squalls,and 491 croaks from 11 captive giant panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)neonates from age 0 to 15 days.In playback experiments,we also tested whether mothers could detect ultrasound.Our results show that neonates use broadband calls with ultrasonic frequencies up to 65 kHz to convey information about their physiological needs and to attract maternal care.In playback experiments,we tested if mothers reacted differently to broadband calls(BBC)than to artificially altered calls that included only frequencies20 kHz(USC).Playback confirmed that,although adult females responded significantly less often to USC,BBC than to or AUDC,they could detect USC,BBC and generally made appropriate behavioral responses,indicating a potential benefit for neonates to utilize ultrasonic and broadband frequencies.Our findings provide a new insight into mother–infant communication in giant pandas and will be helpful for reducing the mortality of cubs,younger than 1 month old,in captivity.

DEAR EDITOR,Big cats,such as Amur tigers(Panthera tigris altaica)and Amur leopards(P.pardus orientalis),are apex predator and have evolved specialized traits for hunting and carnivory(Moya et al.,2022),thus playing a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem integrity by regulating prey-predator dynamics.However,human-induced pressures,habitat fragmentation,and environmental alterations have restricted these species in small and isolated populations.Currently,all extant big cats are categorized as endangered or threatened according to their conservation status.Amur tigers and Amur leopards share overlapping geographic ranges,habitats,and certain prey species in the forests of Northeast Asia(Jiang et al.,2015).To reduce interspecies conflict,these carnivores exhibit differentiated dietary and temporal niches.Amur tigers predominantly prey on large ungulates,while Amur leopards hunt small to medium-sized animals(Sugimoto et al.,2016).Additionally,they occupy different temporal niches,with tigers being active at night and leopards more active during the day.Despite spatial and temporal niche partitioning,interspecific competition between these two species is inevitable.Tigers,benefiting from their greater size,have a competitive advantage over leopards,which can manifest in occasional leopard predation by tigers and declines in leopard populations with increasing tiger density(Jiang et al.,2015).Tigers also displace leopards from marginal habitats in nature reserves where they coexist.

理解植物功能性状的地理变异对预测全球气候变化下的植物响应至关重要。叶片表皮毛由表皮细胞发育而来,具有调节叶片温度和控制气体交换的功能,然而大的地理尺度上叶片表皮毛如何变异,以及它们与气孔之间的关系仍不清楚。本研究以栓皮栎(Quercus variabilis)为研究对象,分析了东亚地区44个种群叶片表皮毛密度,并评估了它们与气候因子和气孔等性状之间的相关性。同时,为了进一步检测环境变化下的表皮毛响应特征以及与气孔之间的协同关系,本研究利用其中15个种群开展了同质园试验。研究结果发现,栓皮栎叶片表皮毛密度平均值为459.78个mm^(−2),变异范围为325.79–552.38 mm^(−2)。表皮毛密度会随纬度增加而增加,随经度减少而减少,并且与温度和降水呈负相关。同时发现,无论是在野外还是在同质园,叶片表皮毛密度均与气孔密度呈正相关,并且两者均会随干旱强度的增加而增加。这些结果表明,面对环境变化叶片表皮毛密度具有高度的适应性变异,并且可与气孔协同适应这种变化。该研究结果对加深理解气候变化下植物适应策略以及叶片功能性状之间的协同互作具有重要意义。

Drivers of tree demographic trade-offs in a temperate forest

Background: The demographic trade-offs(i.e. growth and survival) play important roles in forest dynamics and they are driven by multiple factors, including species’ inherent life-history strategies(such as shade-tolerance and mycorrhizal type), neighborhood interactions(such as conspecific negative density dependence, CNDD), and abiotic environment pressures. Although studies found that CNDD occurred in tropical and temperate forest,attempts to identify how the variations in CNDD control their impacts on growth and survival remain debate. In the present study, we conducted an extensive field survey, and analyzed demographic rates from 24 co-occurring temperate tree species, in order to test the importance of CNDD in shaping the growth-survival trade-offs.Results: Our study found that density dependence and environmental filtering were strong predictors for individual growth-survival trade-offs, while they showed variations across shade-intolerant and ectomycorrhizal species, as well as saplings and juveniles with more negative CNDD. Species growth showed positive relationship with mortality. And our results also support the fact that CNDD drives species growth-survival trade-offs at the community level with environmental stress.Conclusions: Our study indicates that biotic interactions such as density dependence and environment filtering played an important role in growth-survival trade-offs, and confirmed that the Janzen-Connell hypothesis in temperate forest was associated with species life-history strategies. In addition, shade-tolerance, mycorrhizal type and life-stage of forest species responded differently to CNDD, thus providing insights regarding different community assembly mechanisms and their interactions. Therefore, it is important to take species survival with growth and species life-history strategies into account when focusing on forest dynamics.

Trading water for carbon has cautioned large-scale afforestation in global drylands.However,model simulations suggested that the consumption of soil water could be partially offset by increasing precipitation due to vegetation feedback.A systematic meta-analysis of long-term and large-scale field observations is urgently required to address the abovementioned limitations,and the implementation of large-scale afforestation since 1978 in northern China provides an ideal example.This study collected data comprising 1226 observations from 98 sites in northern China to assess the variation in soil water content(SWC)with stand age after afforestation and discuss the effects of tree species,precipitation and conversions of land use types on SWC.We found that the SWC has been decreased by coniferous forest and broadleaf forest at rates of 0.6 and 3.2 mm decade-1,respectively,since 1978.There is a significant declining trend of SWC with the stand age of plantations,and the optimum growth stage for plantation forest is 0-20 a in northern China.However,we found increases in SWC for the conversion from grassland to forest and in the low-precipitation region,both are corresponding to the increased SWC in coniferous forest.Our study implies that afforestation might lead to a soil water deficit crisis in northern China in the long term at the regional scale but depends on prior land use types,tree taxa and the mean annual precipitation regime,which sheds light on decision-making regarding ecological restoration policies and water resource management in drylands.

Evaluating alternative hypotheses behind biodiversity and multifunctionality relationships in the forests of Northeastern China

Background:The importance of biodiversity in maintaining multiple ecosystem functions has been widely accepted.However,the specific mechanisms affecting biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality(BEMF)relationships in forests are largely unknown.This is particularly evident for the macroscale of a large forested landscape.Methods:Based on 412 one-tenth hectare field plots distributed over forested areas across northeastern China,we evaluated three alternative hypotheses explaining the relationships between BEMF,namely:niche complementarity,mass ratio,and vegetation quantity effect.We used Rao's quadratic entropy and community weighted mean trait values to quantify forest“biodiversity”.These two variables represent two complementary aspects of functional properties,which are in line with niche complementary and mass ratio effects,respectively.Results:Ecosystem multifunctionality was negatively associated with the community weighted mean values of acquisitive traits(a proxy of mass ratio effect).Rao's quadratic entropy(a proxy of niche complementarity)had no relationship with ecosystem multifunctionality.Higher stand biomass greatly increased ecosystem multifunctionality,which is in line with the vegetation quantity effect.Our results confirm that in the temperate forests of northeastern China,the relationship of BEMF was primarily affected by vegetation quantity,followed by mass ratio effects.Conclusions:The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of the main drivers of ecosystem multifunctionality in forest ecosystems.The results of this study provide additional evidence to support the vegetation quantity and mass ratio hypotheses in forest ecosystems.

Assessment on the component pattern of mountain vacation potential suitability in Hunan Province, China

In China,mountain destinations offer more opportunities for vacation than beaches and springs,with a larger national coverage,richer landscapes and various diverse folk cultures.Hunan Province,for example,serves as a typical mountain tourism destination.Our research aims to assess the potential suitability and component pattern of holidaymaking in Hunan Province to support for scientific endeavors and sustainable use of mountain resources in Hunan.An approach for mapping potential suitability was constructed based on Weighted Linear Combination(WLC)of six primary factors including terrain,climate suitability period,biology and environment,human activity culture,hydrological landscape,and road infrastructure,which is calculated on the base of eleven secondary factors used as suitability criteria.Analytic hierarchy process(AHP)and geographic information system(GIS)were also integrated into the evaluation models to prepare six single and complex factor suitability maps for mountain vacation.Multivariate clustering was used to clarify the component pattern of single factor combinations in each mountain vacation suitability index(MVSI)class.The results have shown that:1)Regions with high suitability are distributed with characteristics of significant dispersion and limited aggregation;2)15.89%of the sample mountains are highly suitable,30.78%are moderately suitable,42.61%are marginally suitable and 10.72%are poorly suitable;3)The complexity of index combination corresponding to each level is different;4)Different combinations emphasize different destination needs.The study reveals the suitability class,characteristics,and limiting factors of mountain vacation in different geographical locations on the provincial scale.These elements play an instructive role in scientific decision-making and orderly exploitation of resources among Hunan’s Mountain destinations.Furthermore,the study can also be used as a basis for the suitability evaluation of mountain vacation in other areas.
