This paper is attempted to develop a set of suitable principles and methodologies for urban ecological planning of land use,to analyze the ecological suitability of different kinds of land use patterns of Tianjin City, to help local decision makers to work out concrete ecological strategies for promoting a sound development of the city and for improving the life quality of the citizens, and to provide the decision makers with a new approach for solving the environmental problems brought about by the improper mixture of industry and res.dence.

After about 10 years' runing of the LCC (DTRC, USA) and the HYKAT( HSVA,Germany) , another new large cavitation channel with low background noise is to be in operation inChina Ship sci.ntific res.arch Center(CSS-RC), Wuxi, China. The important specific properties of thechannel are the large test section (2. 0 m in height, 2. 2 m in width and 10. 5 m in length) , themaximum speed of more than 15 m/s, the low turbulence level, the low background noise of the wholefacility, together with the new noise measurement system. So large scale models can be tested withonly minor wall effects and at high Renolds numbers, and the pretentious acoustical measurements canbe performed. This paper describes the features.of the new channel and the first test res.ltsobtained during extensive calibration and validation.

The problem of robust stabilization for nonlinear systems with partially known uncertainties is considered in this paper. The required information about uncertainties in the system is merely that the uncertainties are bounded, but the upper bounds are incompletely known. This paper can be viewed as an extension of the work in reference [1]. To compensate the uncertainties, an adaptive robust controller based on Lyapunov method is proposed and the design algorithm is also suggested. Compared with some previous controllers which can only ensure ultimate uniform boundedness of the systems, the controller given in the paper can make sure that the obtained closed-loop system is asymptotically stable in the large. Simulations show that the method pres.nted is available and effective.

The squeeze casting of a 2024 Al alloy was carried out to investigate the effect on microsegregation in the alloy of the application of pres.ure followed by diffusion annealing. The experimental res.lts indicate that an optimum applied pres.ure followed by an optimum diffusion annealing process can markedly reduce the degree of microsegregation and improve the mechanical properties to a degree that can approach the level of forged 2024 Al alloy.

Effects of Carbonate on Exchangeability and Bioavailability of Exogenous Neodymium in Soil

The effects of carbonate on the exchangeability and the bioavailability of exogenous neodymium in soil were studied by Nd-147 isotopic tracer method. Exchangeable Nd was extracted by I mol(.)L(-1) NaAc (pH8.2) in the experiment. The res.lts indicate that whether carbonate exists in soil or not, beyond 99% of exogenous Nd is adsorbed by soil. Low-concentration carbonate (0.8 similar to 1.6 g(.)kg(-1)) can reduce exchangeable Nd concentration in soil, while high-concentration carbonate (4.0 g(.)kg(-1)) impacts little on the exchangeable Nd concentration. In addition, carbonate of 0.8 similar to 1.6 g(.)kg(-1) in soil can inhibit wheat seedlings to absorb Nd. However, when the carbonate concentration rises to 4.0 g(.)kg(-1) the inhibition will become indistinct.

Hemoglobin-styrene oxide adducts in blood have been studied as a molecular biomarker of worker exposed to styrene. Determination of protein-styrene oxide adducts in different biological samples with modified Raney-Ni procedure is described in this paper. The following biological samples have been investigated: fres. rat blood reacted with styrene oxide in vitro: rat blood reacted with styrene or styrene oxide in vivo: vein blood from workers exposed to styrene in two factories. The data showed that there was a good linear dose-res.onse relationship between reacting dose of styrene oxide or styrene and amount of protein-styrene oxide adducts in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. For human samples, a dose-res.onse relationship between protein adducts and styrene exposure can be found in glass fiber factory, but not in piano manufacture plant.

The 29th Olympic Game will be held in Beijing in 2008. It will be a green game to promote sustainable development of men, cities and regions through ecological development advocating 'man and nature be in one'. 'eco' here means a process, a driving force, an action, a culture and a kind of vitality leading to sustainable development. It is a mechanism embodying the Olympic spirit of competition, cooperation and self-reliance. The paper explained the ecological significance, connotation and objectives of Beijing Green Olympic Game. Ten major ecological heritages of Beijing have been investigated including ecologically sound landscape, culture, transportation, physical exercise, health care, sanitation, food, family relationship, agriculture, and human ecological totality. To pres.rve or res.ore the above mentioned old tradition, a green Olympic action plan has been made out in Beijing initiated by NGOs, supported by entrepreneurs and coordinated by government agencies. Four kinds of eco-engineering have been planned for blue sky, clean water, green land and eco-city development. The demonstration role of Beijing Green Olympic Game to developing regions and countries is also discussed.

Multimedia model of atrazine in plant-soil-groundwater system with a fugacity approach

The application of atrazine in China during the last ten years has led to some environmental problems. In this paper, the multimedia model of atrazine in soil-plant-groundwater system at Baiyangdian Lake area in Northern China was established using a fugacity approach, and verified with observed values. The model involved 7 environmental compartments which are air, groundwater, soil, corn roots, corn stem, corn leaf and kernel of corn. The res.lts showed that the relative errors between calculated and observed values have a mean value of 24.7%, the highest value is 48% and the lowest value is 1.4%. All these values indicated that this multimedia model can be used to simulate the environmental fate of atrazine. Both the calculated and observed values of concentrations of atrazine in plant compartments are in the following order: in corn roots > in corn stem > in kernel of corn > in corn leaf, it exhibited a good regularity. The prediction res.lts indicated that concentrations of atrazine in the groundwater and kernel of corn will override the limitation of 3 μg/L and 0.05 mg/kg res.ectively.
