As-cast and extruded Mg-Zn-Ca systems for biodegradable implants:Characterization and corrosion behavior

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of alloy processing and composition as well as the pH control and testing medium on the in vitro corrosion performance of Mg-Zn-Ca systems for biodegradable *** grain size and secondary phases were analyzed by optical microscopy,scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy,and X-ray *** kelvin probe force microscopy(SKPFM)was used to analyze the Volta potential values of the second *** corrosion performance of the three alloys was evaluated by electrochemical and hydrogen evolution methods inα-MEM with and without organic species(*** and inorganicα-MEM).Two strategies were followed to evaluate the influence of the pH on the corrosion behavior:daily solution replacement and CO_(2)flow based pH *** all the materials,the organic medium accelerates the corrosion *** pH maintained by CO_(2)flow through the medium results in considerably higher corrosion rates for all *** impact of pH is lesser on the as-cast alloys due to the barrier effect of the secondary phases,particularly pronounced in the Mg1Zn1Ca alloy which showed the lowest corrosion *** wrought Mg0.5Zn0.2Ca alloy that lacks the refined secondary phase network and exhibits high number of twins undergoes accelerated uniform corrosion under constant pH conditions.

Fusion-evaporation cross sections of^(238)U(^(9)Be,5n)^(242)Cm are measured over a wide energy range around the Coulomb *** measured cross sections are compared with model calculations using two codes,namely HIVAP2 and KE ***2 calculations overestimate the measured fusion-evaporation cross sections by a factor of approximately *** KEWPIE2 calculations,two approaches,namely the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin(WKB)approximation and the empirical barrier-distribution(EBD)method,are used for the capture probability;both of them properly describe the measured cross ***,fusion cross sections of^(7.9)Be+^(238)Umeas-ured in two experiments are applied to constrain model calculations further through three codes,i.e,HIVAP2,KEWPIE2,and *** in these codes are also examined by comparison with measured fusion cross *** the comparisons indicate that the K EWPIE2 calculations using the WKB approximation agree well with the measured cross sections of both fusion reactions 7.9 Be+^(238)U and the fusion-evaporation reaction 238U(9 Be,5n)242 *** using the fusion code CCFULL are also in good agreement with the measured fusion cross sections of 7.9 Be+^(238)U.

Purpose:This study aimed to examine the associations of accelerometer-derived steps volume and intensity with hospitalizations and all-cause mortality in older ***:This prospective cohort study involved 768 community-dwelling Spanish older adults(78.8±4.9 years,mean±SD;53.9% females)from the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging(2012-2017).The number of steps per day and step cadence(steps/min) were derived from a hip-mounted accelerometer worn for at least 4 days at *** were followed-up over a mean period of 3.1 years for hospitalization and 5.7 years for all-cause *** proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the individual and joint associations between daily steps and stepping intensity with hospitalizations and all-cause ***:Included participants walked 5835± 3445 steps/day with an intensity of 7.3± 4.1 steps/*** adjusting for age,sex,body mass index(BMI),education,income,marital status and comorbidities,higher step count(hazard ratio(HR)=0.95,95% confidence interval(95%CI:0.90-1.00,and HR=0.87,95%CI:0.81-0.95 per additional 1000 steps) and higher step intensity(HR=0.95,95%CI:0.91-0.99,and HR=0.89,95%CI:0.84-0.95 per each additional step/min) were associated with fewer hospitalizations and all-cause mortality risk,*** to the group having low step volume and intensity,individuals in the group having high step volume and intensity had a lower risk of hospitalization(HR=0.72,95%CI:0.52-0.98) and all-cause mortality(HR=0.60,95%CI:0.37-0.98).Conclusion:Among older adults,both high step volume and step intensity were significantly associated with lower hospitalization and all-cause mortality *** step volume and intensity may benefit older people.

Colorectal cancer （CRC） is one of the most common neoplasms and an important cause of mortality worldwide （http：//globocan. ***]）. Approximately 35% of the variation in CRC susceptibility is likely due to heritable factors （Lichtenstein et al., 2000}. Genetic variations in the human genome include single nucleotide variants （SnVs）, short insertions and deletions, and larger structural variants resulting in gain or loss of genomic DnA larger than 1 kb, such as copy number variants （CnVs）. leaving aside the importance of CnVs in sporadic tumor development, these variants can also be present in the germline DnA of healthy individuals from the general population and be considered polymorphic.

Cytotoxic proteins have a wide applicability in human therapies, especially in those conditions that require efficient and selective cell killing, such as cancer. Chlorotoxin (CTX) is a small (4 kDa) basic peptide from the venom of the yellow scorpion leiurus quinquestriatus , which blocks small-conductance chloride channels thus paralyzing the scorpion prey. Being not extremely potent as a cytotoxin (for instance when compared with ribosome-inactivating proteins), it has gained interest as a targeting agent.

Proteomic analysis was carried out on the Crab(upper-shore)and Wave(lower-shore)ecotypes of Littorina saxatilis from a hybrid zone at Silleiro Cape,*** profiles of individual snails were *** expression in F_(1)hybrid snails bred in the laboratory and snails with intermediate shell phenotypes collected from the mid-shore were compared with Crab and Wave ecotypes using analytical approaches used to study *** analysis over many protein spots showed that the F_(1)snails are distinct from both ecotypes but closer to the Wave *** intermediate snails are highly variable,some closer to the Crab and others to the Wave *** on a protein by protein basis,some proteins are significantly closer in expression to the Crab and others to the Wave ecotype for both F_(1)and intermediate ***,a significant majority of proteins were closer in expression to the Wave ecotype for the F_(1),consistent with the multivariate *** such significant majority toward either the Crab or Wave ecotype was observed for the intermediate *** closer similarity of F_(1)and Wave ecotype expression patterns could be the result of similar selective pressures in the similar mid-shore and low-shore *** a significantly larger number of proteins,intermediate snails were closer in expression to the ecotype having the lower expression,for both Crab and Wave *** is somewhat unexpected as lower expression might be expected to be an indication of impairment of function and lower *** analysis could be important for the identification of candidate proteins useful for gaining improved understanding of adaptation and barriers to gene flow in hybrid zones.

Estimation of mean water vapour residence time during tropical cyclones using a Lagrangian approach

Tropical cyclone(TC)-related rainfall mostly depends on the atmospheric moisture uptake from local and remote *** this study,the mean water vapour residence time(MWVRT)was computed for precipitation related to TCs in each basin and on a global scale by applying a Lagrangian moisture source diagnostic *** to our results,the highest MWVRT was found for the TCs over the South Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean basins(~3.08 days),followed by the Western north Pacific Ocean,Central and East north Pacific Ocean,north Indian Ocean,and north Atlantic Ocean basins(which exhibited values of 2.98,2.94,2.85,and 2.72 days,respectively).We also found a statistically significant(pn MWVRT,at a rate of~2.4 h/decade in the north Indian Ocean and~1.0 h/decade in the remaining *** average,the MWVRT decreased during the 24 h before TCs made landfall,and the atmospheric parcels precipitated faster after evaporation when TCs moved over land than over the *** research should focus on the relationship between global warming and MWVRT of atmospheric parcels that precipitate over TC positions.
