Life cycle assessment of homogeneous Fenton process as pretreatment for refractory pharmaceutical wastewater

The applicability of the life cycle assessment(LCA)to the Fenton process should be considered not only at the laboratory-scale but also at the full-scale.In this study,the LCA process was applied to evaluate the homo-geneous Fenton process for the treatment of high salinity pharmaceutical wastewater.The potential environmental impacts were calculated using Simapro software implemen-ting the CML 2001 methodology with normalization factors of 1995 world.Foreground data obtained directly from the full-scale wastewater treatment plant and labora-tory were used to conduct a life cycle inventory analysis,ensuring highly accurate results.By normalized results,the Fenton process reveals sensitive indicators,primarily toxi-city indicators(human toxicity,freshwater aquatic toxicity,and marine aquatic toxicity),as well as acidification and eutrophication impacts,contributed by hydrogen peroxide and iron sludge incineration,respectively.Overall,hydrogen peroxide and iron sludge incineration contribute significantly,accounting for at least 78%of these indicators.In sludge treatment phase,treatment of iron mud and infrastructure of hazardous waste incineration plants were the key contributors of environmental impacts,adding up to more than 95%.This study suggests the need to develop efficient oxidation processes and effective iron sludge treatment methods to reduce resource utilization and improve environmental benefits.

Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries to resynthesize high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion storage

The spent lithium-ion batteries recovery has been brought into focus widely for its environmental imperatives and potential profits from the metal components,such as lithium,cobalt,nickel and manganese.However,the weaker pollution and fewer profits of LiMn2O4cathode dispel the enthusiasm and responsibility of industry companies.Thus,a simplified and efncient method to regenerate the sodium-ion cathode materials and separate Li from spent LiMn2O4materials for the profit improvement is proposed.In detail,adjusting the parameters of carbothermal reduction process appropriately,the LiMn2O4spinel structure is destroyed within a short period time and transformed into simple metal oxide.As anticipated,nearly 95 wt.%lithium can be obtained and recovered during the water leaching,while 99 wt.% of manganese can be extracted in acid solution.Noted that the leaching residue can return to the carbothermic reduction,leading to a closed-loop economic recycling process.The regenerated Na0.67Ni0.3Mn0.7O2cathode displays excellent electrochemical performance with superior cycling stability(the initial capacity reaches 95.9 mAh·g-1,and the retention rate reached 98.3% after 100 cycles at 1 C).The delicate strategy of sodium-ion cathode material regenerated from spent LiMn2O4aims to realize lithium separation and material utilization of manganese simultaneously,providing the instructive suggestion to rise up the recycling profits of spent batteries.

Predicting short-term major postoperative complications in intestinal resection for Crohn’s disease:A machine learning-based study

BACKGROUND Due to the complexity and numerous comorbidities associated with Crohn’s disease(CD),the incidence of postoperative complications is high,significantly impacting the recovery and prognosis of patients.Consequently,additional stu-dies are required to precisely predict short-term major complications following intestinal resection(IR),aiding surgical decision-making and optimizing patient care.AIM To construct novel models based on machine learning(ML)to predict short-term major postoperative complications in patients with CD following IR.METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed on clinical data derived from a patient cohort that underwent IR for CD from January 2017 to December 2022.The study participants were randomly allocated to either a training cohort or a validation cohort.The logistic regression and random forest(RF)were applied to construct models in the training cohort,with model discrimination evaluated using the area under the curves(AUC).The validation cohort assessed the performance of the constructed models.RESULTS Out of the 259 patients encompassed in the study,5.0%encountered major postoperative complications(Clavien-Dindo≥III)within 30 d following IR for CD.The AUC for the logistic model was 0.916,significantly lower than the AUC of 0.965 for the RF model.The logistic model incorporated a preoperative CD activity index(CDAI)of≥220,a diminished preoperative serum albumin level,conversion to laparotomy surgery,and an extended operation time.A nomogram for the logistic model was plotted.Except for the surgical approach,the other three variables ranked among the top four important variables in the novel ML model.CONCLUSION Both the nomogram and RF exhibited good performance in predicting short-term major postoperative complic-ations in patients with CD,with the RF model showing more superiority.A preoperative CDAI of≥220,a di-minished preoperative serum albumin level,and an extended operation time might be the most crucial variables.The findings of this study can assist clinicians in

Enhancement of heavy metals desorption from the soil by eddy deep leaching in hydrocyclone

An eddy deep leaching technology was developed in this paper to address the challenge of treating heavy metal contaminants in industrial mining areas.The desorption effect of As,Cd,Sb and Pb was investigated utilizing chemical leaching and physical eddy techniques.It was found that the heavy metals concentration increased with decreasing particle size.The highest proportion of Cd in the form distribution of soil was in the bound to iron and manganese oxides,while the maximum proportion of As,Sb and Pb were in the residual.The optimal solid-liquid ratio of the hydrocyclone was 1:20,and the corresponding separation efficiency and flow rate were 84.7%and 1.76 m^(3)/hr,respectively.The grade efficiency of soil particle separation increases with particle size and exceeds 99%for particles above 1,000μm.Leaching experiments have revealed that oxalic acid(OA)and a combination of oxalic acid and EDTA(OAPE)were more efficient than citric acid(CA)and a combination of citric acid and EDTA(CAPE)for the desorption of heavy metals,respectively.The comparison of OAPE and eddy leaching found that the latter improved the desorption efficiency by 9.4%,7.5%,7.2%and 7.8%for As,Cd,Sb and Pb compared to the former,respectively.The results demonstrated that the eddy leaching technique could further enhance the desorption efficiency of heavy metals.It is expected to provide technical support for soil remediation with reduced usage of leaching agents.

Rare earth elements(REEs)are irreplaceable materials supporting low-carbon technology and equip-ment,and their commercial demand and strategic position are becoming increasingly prominent.With the continuous depletion of rare earth(RE)resources,developing high-efficiency beneficiation and eco-friendly metallurgical processes has attracted widespread attention.This paper reviews the major minerals exploited for RE production and their deposits,as well as the beneficiation and metallurgical processes of RE minerals.Bastnaesite,monazite,mixed RE ores,and ion-adsorption clays are the main raw materials in the world to date.RE-bearing ores(except ion-adsorption minerals)are generally beneficiated by flotation,gravity and magnetic separation techniques.The mainstream metallurgical processes for bastnaesite,monazite and mixed RE concentrates are oxidation roasting-HCl leaching,caustic soda decomposition and high-temperature concentrated sulfuric acid roasting,respectively.Ion-adsorption clays are directly processed by in situ leaching-precipitation/solvent extraction.To achieve the sustainable development of RE resources,it is essential to further explore innovative techniques to achievecomprehensive utilization and cleaner production.

Precise regulation of the phase transformation for pyrolusite during the reduction roasting process

The mechanism involved in the phase transformation process of pyrolusite (MnO_(2)) during roasting in a reducing atmosphere was systematically elucidated in this study,with the aim of effectively using low-grade complex manganese ore resources.According to single-factor experiment results,the roasted product with a divalent manganese (Mn^(2+)) distribution rate of 95.30% was obtained at a roasting time of 25 min,a roasting temperature of 700℃,a CO concentration of 20at%,and a total gas volume of 500 mL·min^(-1),in which the manganese was mainly in the form of manganosite (MnO).Scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller theory demonstrated the microstructural evolution of the roasted product and the gradual reduction in the pyrolusite ore from the surface to the core Thermodynamic calculations,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,and X-ray diffractometry analyses determined that the phase transformation of pyrolusite followed the order of MnO_(2)→Mn_(2)O_(3)→Mn_(3)O_(4)→MnO phase by phase,and the reduction of manganese oxides in each valence state proceeded simultaneously.

HIF-1αpromotes virus replication and cytokine storm in H1N1 virus-induced severe pneumonia through cellular metabolic reprogramming

The mortality of patients with severe pneumonia caused by H1N1 infection is closely related to viral replication and cytokine storm.However,the specific mechanisms triggering virus replication and cytokine storm are still not fully elucidated.Here,we identified hypoxia inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α)as one of the major host molecules that facilitates H1N1 virus replication followed by cytokine storm in alveolar epithelial cells.Specifically,HIF-1αprotein expression is upregulated after H1N1 infection.Deficiency of HIF-1αattenuates pulmonary injury,viral replication and cytokine storm in vivo.In addition,viral replication and cytokine storm were inhibited after HIF-1αknockdown in vitro.Mechanistically,the invasion of H1N1 virus into alveolar epithelial cells leads to a shift in glucose metabolism to glycolysis,with rapid production of ATP and lactate.Inhibition of glycolysis significantly suppresses viral replication and inflammatory responses.Further analysis revealed that H1N1-induced HIF-1αcan promote the expression of hexokinase 2(HK2),the key enzyme of glycolysis,and then not only provide energy for the rapid replication of H1N1 virus but also produce lactate,which reduces the accumulation of the MAVS/RIG-I complex and inhibits IFN-α/βproduction.In conclusion,this study demonstrated that the upregulation of HIF-1αby H1N1 infection augments viral replication and cytokine storm by cellular metabolic reprogramming toward glycolysis mainly through upregulation of HK2,providing a theoretical basis for finding potential targets for the treatment of severe pneumonia caused by H1N1 infection.

Degradation analysis and doping modification optimization for high-voltage P-type layered cathode in sodium-ion batteries

Advancing high-voltage stability of layered sodium-ion oxides represents a pivotal avenue for their progress in energy storage applications.Despite this,a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underpinning their structural deterioration at elevated voltages remains insufficiently explored.In this study,we unveil a layer delamination phenomenon of Na_(0.67)Ni_(0.3)Mn_(0.7)O_(2)(NNM)within the 2.0-4.3 V voltage,attributed to considerable volumetric fluctuations along the c-axis and lattice oxygen reactions induced by the simultaneous Ni^(3+)/Ni^(4+)and anion redox reactions.By introducing Mg doping to diminished Ni-O antibonding,the anion oxidation-reduction reactions are effectively mitigated,and the structural integrity of the P2 phase remains firmly intact,safeguarding active sites and precluding the formation of novel interfaces.The Na_(0.67)Mg_(0.05)Ni_(0.25)Mn_(0.7)O_(2)(NMNM-5)exhibits a specific capacity of100.7 mA h g^(-1),signifying an 83%improvement compared to the NNM material within the voltage of2.0-4.3 V.This investigation underscores the intricate interplay between high-voltage stability and structural degradation mechanisms in layered sodium-ion oxides.

Graphite recycling from spent lithium-ion batteries for fabrication of high-performance aluminum-ion batteries

Efficient extraction of electrode components from recycled lithium-ion batteries （LIBs） and their highvalue applications are critical for the sustainable and ecofriendly utilization of resources.This work demonstrates a novel approach to stripping graphite anodes embedded with Li+from spent LIBs directly in anhydrous ethanol which can be utilized as high efficiency cathodes for aluminum-ion batteries （AIBs）.Recycled graphite （RG） with foam morphology and crystal structure defects was obtained under the action of ultrasonic peeling and gas generation reaction between residual lithium-graphite interlayer compound and ethanol.The inherent open structure of RG facilitates the intercalation/deintercalation of chloralum anions （AlCl4-） and enhances its AIB cathode performance.The electrochemical measurements revea that the RG cathode has a specific capacity of 123 m Ah·g-1at a current of 5 A·g-1,which is 1.55 times higher than tha of unprocessed natural graphite and 1.25 times higher than that of commercial artificial graphite.Additionally,the RG cathode demonstrated remarkable stability,retaining its high particular capacity of 138.15 mAh·g-1even through2000 times at 10 A·g-1in a low-cost electrolyte consisting of an ionic liquid/urea/AlCl3mixture.This work offers a novel approach to reusing of graphite anode waste materials from LIBs.

Effect of crystal morphology of ultrahigh-nickel cathode materials on high temperature electrochemical stability of lithium ion batteries

Higher nickel content endows Ni-rich cathode materials LiNi_(x)Co_yMn_(1-x-y)O_(2)(x>0.6)with higher specific capacity and high energy density,which is regarded as the most promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries.However,the deterioration of structural stability hinders its practical application,especially under harsh working conditions such as high-temperature cycling.Given these circumstances,it becomes particularly critical to clarify the impact of the crystal morphology on the structure and high-temperature performance as for the ultrahigh-nickel cathodes.Herein,we conducted a comprehensive comparison in terms of microstructure,high-temperature long-cycle phase evolution,and high-temperature electrochemical stability,revealing the differences and the working mechanisms among polycrystalline(PC),single-crystalline(SC)and Al doped SC ultrahigh-nickel materials.The results show that the PC sample suffers a severe irreversible phase transition along with the appearance of microcracks,resulting a serious decay of both average voltage and the energy density.While the Al doped SC sample exhibits superior cycling stability with intact layered structure.In-situ XRD and intraparticle structural evolution characterization reveal that Al doping can significantly alleviate the irreversible phase transition,thus inhibiting microcracks generation and enabling enhanced structure.Specifically,it exhibits excellent cycling performance in pouch-type full-cell with a high capacity retention of 91.8%after 500 cycles at 55℃.This work promotes the fundamental understanding on the correlation between the crystalline morphology and high-temperature electrochemical stability and provides a guide for optimization the Ni-rich cathode materials.
