Emerging contaminants(ECs)represent a small fraction of the large chemical pollution puzzle where a wide variety of potentially hazardous chemicals reach the environment,and new compounds are continuously synthesized and released in wastewater treatment plants and ultimately in effluent and *** have been classified into various categories;however,this article focuses on the fate of major categories,namely pharmaceutical and personal care products(PPCPs),per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances(PFAS),flame retardants,surfactants,endocrine-disrupting chemicals(EDCs),and microplastics(MPs).These ECs when discharged to sewer and downstream wastewater treatment plants can undergo further transformations and either degrade,persist or convert into by-products which have the potential in some cases to be more *** of potential dangerous impacts of the availability of these contaminants in the environment,information on the fate and behavior of these pollutants is highly important to develop new strategies,such as the regulation of chemicals imported into Australia and Australian consumer goods and environmental policies to mitigate them in a sustainable ***,advanced technologies are required for the detection and identification of novel contaminants emerging in the environment at ultra low *** application of chromatographic techniques coupled with mass spectroscopy has provided attractive breakthroughs to detect new emerging ***,it is crucially important to understand the sensitivity and robustness of these analytical techniques when dealing with complex matrices such as *** addition,most of the literature was focused on selected compounds or a family of compounds and the existing reviews have paid less attention to examine the formation of metabolites during the wastewater treatment process and their impacts on the *** review presents an overview of the presence of different classes of ECs around the wo

Murine hepatocellular carcinoma derived stem cells reveal epithelial-to-mesenchymal plasticity

AIM To establish a model to enrich and characterize stemlike cells from murine normal liver and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) cell lines and to further investigate stem-like cell association with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(EMT).METHODS In this study,we utilized a stem cell conditioned serumfree medium to enrich stem-like cells from mouse HCC and normal liver cell lines,Hepa 1-6 and AML12,*** isolated the 3-dimensional spheres and assessed their stemness characteristics by evaluating theRNA levels of stemness genes and a cell surface stem cell marker by quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR(q RTPCR).Next,we examined the relationship between stem cells and EMT using q *** Three-dimensional spheres were enriched by culturing murine HCC and normal hepatocyte cell lines in stem cell conditioned serum-free medium supplemented with epidermal growth factor,basic fibroblast growth factor and heparin *** 3-dimensional spheres had enhanced stemness markers such as Klf4 and Bmi1 and hepatic cancer stem cell(CSC) marker Cd44 compared to parental cells grown as adherent *** report that epithelial markers E-cadherin and ZO-1 were downregulated,while mesenchymal markers Vimentin and Fibronectin were upregulated in 3-dimensional *** 3-dimensional spheres also exhibited changes in expression of Snai,Zeb and Twist family of EMT transcription *** Our novel method successfully enriched stem-like cells which possessed an EMT *** isolation and characterization of murine hepatic CSCs could establish a precise target for the development of more effective therapies for HCC.

Smart Grid Demand Side Response Model to Mitigate Peak Demands on Electrical Networks

The work presents a demand side response（DSR） model,which assists electricity consumers to proactively mitigate peak demand on electrical networks in Eastern and Southern Australia. A low-cost technical arrangement,which is made of Internet relay,a router,solid state switches,and the suitable software,is used to control electricity demand at user＇s premises. The model allows shifting loads from peak to off-peak periods in order to reduce peaks,which helps to moderate the national electrical demand. The model can be concurrently used to accommodate the utilization of renewable energy sources and the introduction of electric vehicles. The results present possible savings on the electrical energy consumption in the designated regions.

Pest rodents are a significant pre and post-harvest problem to rice farmers throughout Southeast Asia but little is known of the extent or severity of this problem in Cambodia. The current study investigated the rodent species found in village and field habitats in six provinces of Cambodia,distributed across the major rice growing *** for pest rodents was carried out for 10 months and farmer interviews were conducted at the same locations to gather information on the nature,timing and severity of rodent damage in different crop types.A total of nine species of rodents were captured. Strong contrasts were found between the captures in the village and field habitats. Rattus argentiventer Robinson & Kloss,the dominant rice field pest in southern Vietnam,was found only in the three surveyed southeastern provinces of Cambodia;this species appears to be absent from the north-west,despite the suitability of habitats in this *** dominant village pest everywhere is Rattus exulans Peale and Mus musculus *** not found at any *** rattus L alone was found in roughly equal numbers in field and village *** reported varying levels of damage caused by rodents,from very mild to extreme,with higher damage usually sustained by the dry season crop rather than the wet season *** with fields located close to rivers,forest or other rodent refuge habitats reported higher damage than those further away.
