How to control and prevent atherosclerosis(AS) remains a global issue that needs to be deeply discussed. The innovation concept of AS and coronary heart disease(CHD) in western medicine provides a good opportunity to develop the traditional Chinese medicine etiology and new control strategies accordingly. This article reviewed and refined the updated control strategies of AS of CHD integrated Chinese and western medicine based on the innovation concept and therapeutic guideline of AS and CHD during the last 10 years.

It has been widely verified by various sorting methods that cancer stem cells (CSCs) exist in different types of tumor cells or ***,due to lack of specific stem cell surface markers,CSCs are very difficult to be separated from some cancer cells,which becomes the key barrier of functional studies of *** sorting method by side population cells (SP) lays a solid foundation for in-depth and comprehensive study of *** identify the existence of SP in prostate cancer cell lines,we applied flow cytometry sorting by SP to cultures of prostate cancer cell lines (TSU,LnCap,and PC-3),and the cancer stem-like characteristics of SP were verified through experiments in vitro and in *** proportion of SP in TSU cells was calculated to be 1.60%±0.40% (±s),and that in PC-3 and LnCap cells was calculated to be 0.80%±0.05% and 0.60%±0.20%,*** colony formation assay demonstrated that the colony formation rate of SP to non-SP sorted from TSU via flow cytometry was 0.495±0.038 to 0.177±0.029 in 500 cells,0.505±0.026 to 0.169±0.024 in 250 cells,and 0.088±0.016 to 0.043±0.012 in 125 cells *** the in vivo experiments,tumors were observed in all the mice on the 10th day after injecting 50 000 cells subcutaneously in SP group,whereas when 5×106 cells were injected in non-SP group,tumors were developed in only 4 out of 8 mice until the 3rd week before the end of the *** results revealed that prostate cancer cells contain a small subset of cells,called SP,possessing much greater capacity of colony formation and tumorigenic potential than *** suggest that SP in prostate cancer cells may play a key role in the self-renewal and proliferation,and have the characteristics of cancer stem-like *** these features will provide a new understanding of the function of prostate CSCs in tumorigenicity and transformation.

Myocardial regeneration is an exciting new frontier for the treatment of heart disease. Many approaches are currently being tested. The use of autologous skeletal myoblasts has been the earliest, with over 10 years of research having been conducted. Current progress in the area of skeletal myoblasts for cardiac regeneration is presented. Reviewed is work from both pre-clinical and clinical studies. Work in this area continues to progress and definitive studies to assess efficacy of myoblasts for heart failure either have been initiated or will be initiated shortly. One result that is clear is that myoblasts can survive and form myotubes and myofibers in the area of myocardial infarction. In the early clinical trials, arrhythmia was a concern. However, further studies have shown that the risk was assumed prematurely based on limited human studies. Myoblasts, therefore, provide a highly promising treatment for heart disease.

Circulating endothelial progenitor cells(EPCs) have been demonstrated to correlate negatively with vascularendothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular risk factors. However, translation of basic research into the clinical practice has been limited by the lack of unambiguous and consistent definitions of EPCs and reduced EPC cell number and function in subjects requiring them for clinical use. This article critically reviews the definition of EPCs based on commonly used protocols, their value as a biomarker of cardiovascular risk factor in subjects with cardiovascular disease, and strategies to enhance EPCs for treatment of ischemic diseases.

Alterations of intestinal microflora may significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of different inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. There is emerging interest on the role of selective modulation of microflora in inducing benefits in inflammatory intestinal disorders, by as probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, antibiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT). To summarize recent evidences on microflora modulation in main intestinal inflammatory disorders, Pub Med was searched using terms microbiota, intestinal flora, probiotics, prebiotics, fecal transplantation. More than three hundred articles published up to 2015 were selected and reviewed. Randomized placebo-controlled trials and meta-analysis were firstly included, mainly for probiotics. A meta-analysis was not performed because of the heterogeneity of these studies. Most of relevant data derived from studies on probiotics, reporting some efficacy in ulcerative colitis and in pouchitis, while disappointing results are available for Crohn's disease. Probiotic supplementation may significantly reduce rates of rotavirus diarrhea. Efficacy of probiotics in NSAID enteropathy and irritable bowel syndrome is still controversial. Finally, FMT has been recently recognized as an efficacious treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. Modulation of intestinal flora represents a very interesting therapeutic target, although it still deserves some doubts and limitations. Future studies should be encouraged to provide new understanding about its therapeutical role.

AIM:To investigate the preventive effects of low-dose proton-pump inhibitors(PPIs) for upper gastrointestinal bleeding(UGIB) in end-stage renal ***:This was a retrospective cohort study that reviewed 544 patients with end-stage renal disease who started dialysis at our center between 2005 and *** examined the incidence of UGIB in 175 patients treated with low-dose PPIs and 369 patients not treated with PPIs(control group).RESULTS:During the study period, 41 patients developed UGIB, a rate of 14.4/1000 *** mean time between the start of dialysis and UGIB events was 26.3 ± 29.6 *** occurred in only two patients in the PPI group(2.5/1000 person-years) and in 39 patients in the control group(19.2/1000 person-years).Kaplan-Meier analysis of cumulative non-bleeding survival showed that the probability of UGIB was significantly lower in the PPI group than in the control group(log-rank test, P < 0.001).Univariate analysis showed that coronary artery disease, PPI use, anti-coagulation, and anti-platelet therapy were associated with *** adjustments for the potential factors influencing risk of UGIB, PPI use was shown to be significantly beneficial in reducing UGIB compared to the control group(HR = 13.7, 95%CI:1.8-101.6; P = 0.011).CONCLUSION:The use of low-dose PPIs in patients with end-stage renal disease is associated with a low frequency of UGIB.

The Westwood Mine aims to reuse the tailings storage facility #1(TSF #1) for solid waste storage, but,downstream of the Northwest dike is considered critical in terms of stability. This paper uses numerical modeling along with geophysical monitoring for assessing the Northwest dike stability during the restoration phase. The impact of waste rock deposition in the upstream TSF #1 is considered. The geophysical monitoring is based on electrical resistivity methods and was used to investigate the internal structure of the dike embankment in different deposition stages. The numerical simulations were performed with SLOPE/W code. The results show a factor of safety well above the minimum recommended value of 1.5. Geophysical monitoring revealed a vertical variation in the electrical resistivity across the dike, which indicates a multilayer structure of the embankment. Without any current in situ data, the geophysical monitoring helped estimating the nature of the materials used and the internal structure of the embankment. These interpretations were validated by geological observation of geotechnical log of the embankment. Based on this study, it is recommended that the water polishing pond be partly filled before waste rock is deposited in TSF #1. In addition, to ensure the stability of the dike, the piezometric head monitoring prior to and during waste rock deposition is recommended.
