OBJECTIVE:Ningdong granule is a traditional Chinese medicine preparation for the treatment of Tourette's ***:Sixty-four rats were randomly assigned to a control group and three experimental groups,*** models of Tourette's syndrome were established via intraperitoneal injection of apomorphine(Apo).The rats in the experimental groups were subsequently intragastrically injected with haloperidol at 10 mg/kg(haloperidol group),Ningdong granule at 370 mg/kg(NDG group),and normal saline(0.9%) at 10 mL/kg(Apo group),*** behaviors were observed and recorded on a daily *** 12 w,all rats were sacrificed,and sera and striatal tissues were *** acid levels in sera,as well as dopamine and dopamine D2 receptor mRNA expression in the striatum,were measured to determine possible mechanisms of Ningdong granule on the dopamine system in a rat model of Tourette's ***:Following intervention,stereotype actions of the Tourette's syndrome rats were significantly inhibited in the haloperidol and NDG groups,respectively(P<0.01).Homovanillic levels were significantly greater in the haloperidol and NDG groups,respectively(P<0.05).In addition,dopamine levels were significantly less in the NDG group(P<0.01),and DRD2 mRNA expression was significantly reduced in the haloperidol and NDG groups,respectively(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Results demonstrated that Ningdong granule effectively inhibited stereotype actions and Tourette's syndrome symptoms by promoting dopamine metabolism,reducing dopamine levels in the striatum,increasing homovanillic acid content in sera,and reducing mRNA expression of DRD2 in the striatum.

Outcome of patients with traumatic cranial nerve palsy admitted to a university hospital in Nepal

Background Cranial nerve palsy (CNP) is a common complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite a high incidence of TBI in Nepal (382 per 100,000), literature on the specific management and outcome of CNP is lacking. This study aimed to examine the outcomes of TBI patients involving single versus multiple *** A retrospective chart review of 170 consecutive TBI patients admitted to the tertiary neurosurgical center in Nepal between April 2020 and April 2022 was conducted. Demographic, clinical, and etiological characteristics; imaging findings; and management strategies were recorded, compared, and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (GOSE) was used to measure the outcomes in two groups of patients (single and multiple CNP) at 3 *** Out of 250 eligible patients, 80 were excluded and CNP was noted in 29 (17.1%) of the remaining 170. The median age was 34.9 years, and falls (60.6%) were the most common cause of trauma. TBI severity was categorized based on GCS: mild (82.4%), moderate (15.9%), and severe (1.8%). Cranial nerve involvement was seen in 29 (17.05%) patients: single cranial nerve involvement in 26 (89.65%) and multiple nerve involvement in 3 (10.34%). The most common isolated cranial nerve involved was the oculomotor nerve (37.9%). CT findings revealed a maximum of skull fractures with no significant association between CNP and CT *** CNP is a common consequence of TBI with the most common etiology being falls followed by RTA. Single CNP was more common than multiple CNP with no significant difference in the outcome in the 3-month GOSE score. Further research is needed to determine the burden of traumatic CNP and establish specific management guidelines for different types of CNP.

AIM To assess the burden of norovirus(No V) and to determine the diversity of circulating strains among hospitalized children in Lebanon. METHODS Stool samples were collected from children presenting with acute gastroenteritis to six major hospitals in Lebanon. A total of 739 eligible stool samples, testing negative for diarrhea caused by rotavirus as a possible viral pathogen, were collected between January 2011 and June 2013. A standardized questionnaire including demographic, epidemiological and clinical observations was used at the time of hospitalization of children presenting with diarrhea. Viral RNA was extracted from stool samples followed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and nucleotide sequencing of a fragment of the viral protein 1 capsid gene. Multiple sequence alignments were carried out and phylogenetic trees were constructed using the MEGA 6 *** Overall, 11.2% of stool samples collected from children aged hospitalized children showed symptoms of diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting and fever. Upon sequencing of positive samples and based on their clustering in the phylogenetic tree, 4/5 of GⅠ gastroenteritis cases were designated GⅠ.3 and one case as GⅠ.4. GⅡ.4 was predominantly detected in stool of our study participants(68%). We report a JB-15/KOR/2008 GⅡ.4 Apeldoorn 2008-like variant strain circulating in 2011; this strain was replaced between 2012 and 2013 by a variant sharing homology with the Sydney/NSW0514/2012/AUS GⅡ.4 Sydney 2012 and Sydney 2012/FRA GⅡ.4 strains. We also report the co-circulation of non-GⅡ.4 genotypes among hospitalized children.
