Uncertainty in illness and coping styles:Moderating and mediating effects of resilience in stroke patients

BACKGROUND Stroke has a great influence on the patient’s mental health,and reasonable psychological adjustment and disease perception can promote the recovery of mental *** To explore the relationships among resilience,coping style,and uncertainty in illness of stroke *** A retrospective study was used to investigate 154 stroke patients who were diagnosed and treated at eight medical institutes in Henan province,China from October to December *** used the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale,the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale,and the medical Coping Modes Questionnaire to test the uncertainty in illness,resilience,and coping style,*** Resilience had a significant moderating role in the correlation between coping style and unpredictability and information deficiency for uncertainty in illness(P<0.05).Further,the tenacity and strength dimensions of resilience mediated the correlation between the confrontation coping style and complexity,respectively(P<0.05).The strength dimension of resilience mediated the correlation between an avoidance coping style and the unpredictability of uncertainty in illness(P<0.05),as well as correlated with resignation,complexity,and unpredictability(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Resilience has moderating and mediating roles in the associations between coping style and uncertainty in illness,indicating that it is vital to improve resilience and consider positive coping styles for stroke patients in the prevention and control of uncertainty in illness.

Acceptability of Physical Examination by Male Doctors in medical Care:Taking Breast Palpation as an Example

In this study,we conducted an investigation among medical workers,patients and college students concerning their acceptability of breast palpation performed by male doctors（hereinafter referred to as “acceptability”,or “the examination”,respectively,if not otherwise indicated）,to get the information about their acceptability and reasons for accepting or declining the examination among the three population. A questionnaire investigation was conducted in 500 patients with breast diseases,700 students of medical colleges,and 280 medical workers working in hospitals. The subjects were asked to choose between two options： accept or do not accept（the examination）. The subjects were asked to fill out the questionnaire forms on free and anonymous basis and the questionnaire forms were collected on spot,immediately after completion. The questionnaires collected were coded,sorted out and checked. Data of the eligible questionnaires were input into Epidata software and analyzed by SPSS. Upon the establishment of the database,the intra-group data were tested by utilizing χ2 test. Among 1480 questionnaires,1293（90.41%） questionnaires were retrieved. Our results showed that 56.78% of patients reported that they could accept breast palpation by male doctors. About 59.66% of medical staff expressed their acceptance of the examination,but only 35.03% of students said the examination. On the basis of this study,we were led to conclude that the examination is not well accepted by different populations,and therefore,（1） medical professionals and administrators should pay attention to the gender-related ethics in their practice and the feeling of patients should be respected when medical examinations involve private or sensitive body parts;（2） to this end,related departments should be properly staffed with doctors of both sexes,and this is especially true of the departments involving the examination or treatment of private or sensitive body parts;（3） health education should,among other

Lipid is a key component of plasma membrane,which plays an important role in the regulation of various cell biological behaviors,including cell proliferation,growth,differentiation and intracellular signal *** have shown that abnormal lipid metabolism is involved in many malignant processes,including colorectal cancer(CRC).Lipid metabolism in CRC cells can be regulated not only by intracellular signals,but also by various components in the tumor microenvironment,including various cells,cytokines,DNA,RNA,and nutrients including *** contrast,abnormal lipid metabolism provides energy and nutrition support for abnormal malignant growth and distal metastasis of CRC *** this review,we highlight the remodeling roles of lipid metabolism crosstalk between the CRC cells and the components of tumor microenvironment.

Visible light-promoted enantioselective aerobic oxidation of pyrazolones by phase transfer catalysis

An efficient and enantioselective aerobic oxidation of 4-substituted pyrazolones has been developed by phase transfer *** visible light as the driving force and O_(2)(in air)as the oxidant,broad scopes(38 examples)of pyrazolones bearing an oxygen-attached carbon stereocenter at C-4 position were obtained in high yields(up to 98%)and excellent enantioselectivities(up to 93%ee)under mid *** ready availability of catalyst,ease of operation,and low-cost and eco-friendly nature highlighted the practical utility of this visible lightpromoted enantioselective aerobic oxidation.

Examining the Hypothesis of Common Factors Shared by Different Addictive Behaviors and Gender Effects on Propensity to Addiction Type

Background: From the two facts reported by previous research: 1) frequent co-occurrence of more than one addictive behavior, 2) childhood adversities identified as origins of different types of addictive behaviors, it is assumed that all types of addictive behaviors, regardless of substance, behavioral, or relationship, share common factors which have not yet been proven by epidemiological research. The Shorter PROMIS Questionnaire (SPQ) was previously developed to assess 16 types of addictive behaviors. Its factor structure, however, has not been fully investigated. Confirming the factor structure will enable us to hypothesize the common factor(s) shared by all, or if not all, most types of addictive behaviors. Aims: This study aimed at 1) examining the factor structure of the SPQ, 2) confirming the reliability of the questionnaire, and 3) examining the impacts of gender and age on each addictive behavior. Methods: Data obtained from 232 Japanese adults who completed all items of the SPQ were used for the analyses. After confirming the one-factor structure model for each of the 16 subscales, the validity of the one-factor structure of the SPQ was evaluated using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), by adapting 16 subscale scores as observed variables. If its validity was not confirmed, another model which showed better compatibility to the data was explored. The reliability of the SPQ as well as that of all 16 subscales was evaluated. Also, the impacts of gender and age on each subscale score were examined. Results: The one-factor structure for each of the 16 subscales was confirmed. The compatibility of the SPQ one-factor model was not acceptable. The best fit model was a bi-factor model in which one main factor was shared by all 16 subscales, and three factors were shared by some specific addictive behaviors. Male respondents were more likely than female respondents to show high scores in Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling, Sex, and Recreational Drugs, and low scores only
