Estimation of the density of neural,glial,and endothelial lineage cells in the adult mouse dentate gyrus

The dentate gyrus subregion of the mammalian hippocampus is an adult neural stem cell niche and site of lifelong *** regarding the role of adult-born neuron synaptic integration in hippocampal circuit function are framed by robust estimations of adultborn versus pre/perinatally-born neuron *** contrast,the non-neurogenic functions of adult neural stem cells and their immediate progeny,such as secretion of bioactive growth factors and expression of extracellular matrix-modifying proteins,lack similar framing due to few estimates of their number versus other prominent secretory ***,we apply immunohistochemical methods to estimate cell density of neural stem/progenitor cells versus other major classes of glial and endothelial cell types that are potentially secretory in the dentate gyrus of adult *** the cell types quantified,we found that GFAP^(+)SOX2^(+)stellate astrocytes were the most numerous,followed by CD31^(+)endothelia,GFAP-SOX2^(+)intermediate progenitors,Olig2^(+)oligodendrocytes,Iba1+microglia,and GFAP^(+)SOX2^(+)radial glia-like neural stem *** did not observe any significant sex differences in density of any cell ***,neural stem/progenitor cells were present at a similar density as several cell types known to have potent functional roles via their *** findings may be useful for refining hypotheses regarding the contributions of these cell types to regulating hippocampal function and their potential therapeutic *** experimental protocols were approved by the Ohio State University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(protocol#2016A00000068)on July 14,2016.

BACKGROUND Despite advances in research on psychopathology and social media use,no comprehensive review has examined published papers on this type of research and considered how it was affected by the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)*** To explore the status of research on psychopathology and social media use before and after the COVID-19 *** We used Bibliometrix(an R software package)to conduct a scientometric analysis of 4588 relevant studies drawn from the Web of Science Core Collection,PubMed,and Scopus *** Such research output was scarce before COVID-19,but exploded after the pandemic with the publication of a number of high-impact *** authors and institutions,located primarily in developed countries,maintained their core positions,largely uninfluenced by COVID-19;however,research production and collaboration in developing countries increased significantly after *** the analysis of keywords,we identified commonly used methods in this field,together with specific populations,psychopathological conditions,and clinical *** have devoted increasing attention to gender differences in psychopathological states and linked COVID-19 strongly to depression,with depression detection becoming a new *** in research on psychopathology and social media use are unbalanced and uncoordinated across countries/regions,and more indepth clinical studies should be conducted in the *** After COVID-19,there was an increased level of concern about mental health issues and a changing emphasis on social media use and the impact of public health emergencies.

The concept of receptive field(RF) is central to sensory neuroscience. Neuronal RF properties have been substantially studied in animals,while those in humans remain nearly unexplored. Here, we measured neuronal RFs with intracranial local field potentials(LFPs) and spiking activity in human visual cortex(V1/V2/V3). We recorded LFPs via macro-contacts and discovered that RF sizes estimated from lowfrequency activity(LFA, 0.5–30 Hz) were larger than those estimated from low-gamma activity(LGA, 30–60 Hz) and high-gamma activity(HGA, 60–150 Hz). We then took a rare opportunity to record LFPs and spiking activity via microwires in V1 simultaneously. We found that RF sizes and temporal profiles measured from LGA and HGA closely matched those from spiking activity. In sum, this study reveals that spiking activity of neurons in human visual cortex could be well approximated by LGA and HGA in RF estimation and temporal profile measurement, implying the pivotal functions of LGA and HGA in early visual information processing.

Sex differences in the influence of social context, salient social stimulation and amphetamine on ultrasonic vocalizations in prairie voles

Prairie voles(Microtus ochrogaster)are a socially monogamous rodent species and their cooperative behaviors require extensive communication between *** use ultrasonic vocalizations(USVs)to communicate and because a prairie vole breeder pair must engage in extensive cooperation for successful reproduction,auditory communication may be critical for this ***,we sought to characterize USVs in adult male and female prairie voles,and to determine how these calls are influenced by social context,salient social stimuli and the psychostimulant drug of abuse amphetamine(AMPH).Here,we characterize prairie vole USVs by showing the range of frequencies of prairie vole USVs,the proportion of various call types,how these call types compare between males and females,and how they are influenced by social stimulation and *** caused a robust increase in the number of USVs in both males and females and there was a dramatic sex difference in the complexity of call structures of AMPH-induced USVs,with males emitting more elaborate ***,we show that novel(***)social cues evoked differential increases in USVs across sex,with males showing a much more robust increase in USV production,both with respect to the frequency and complexity of USV *** to an estrous female in particular caused an extraordinary increase in USVs in male *** data suggest that USVs may be a useful measure of social motivation in this species,including how social behaviors can be impacted by drugs of abuse.

Female Carriers of the Met Allele of the BDNF Val66Met Polymorphism Develop Weaker Fear Memories in a Fear-Potentiated Startle Paradigm

The val66met polymorphism of the bdnf gene, which is associated with compromised brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling, impaired synaptic plasticity, and impaired learning, may increase one’s susceptibility to stress- and anxiety-related disorders. Indeed, previous work has reported greater anxiety-related behaviors and impairments of fear conditioning and extinction in individuals who carry the met allele that results from this polymorphism. Nevertheless, findings in this area of research have been equivocal. Thus, we examined the influence of the val66met polymorphism on fear conditioning, extinction, and extinction memory testing. One hundred and twenty healthy participants completed differential fear conditioning in a fear-potentiated startle paradigm, followed by extinction and extinction memory testing 24 and 48 hr later, respectively. Participants were genotyped for the val66met polymorphism and divided into met allele carriers and non-carriers. Results revealed that, although both met-carriers and non-carriers developed conditioned fear, met-carriers exhibited significantly weaker fear acquisition than non-carriers. This difference persisted throughout extinction and extinction memory testing and, during these last two days of testing, was primarily evident in females. These results are consistent with previous work demonstrating that this polymorphism is associated with impaired amygdala-dependent fear learning and extend such findings by demonstrating that females may be more sensitive to such effects.
