Weight Loss Impact on Change in Depression in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Study to Help Improve Early Evaluation and Management of Risk Factors Leading to Diabetes (SHIELD)

Objectives: This study evaluated the association between weight loss and change in depression among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Weight change from 2008 to 2009 among respondents (with and without T2DM) in the Study to Help Improve Early evaluation and management of risk factors Leading to Diabetes (SHIELD) was calculated. Change in depression was calculated as change from 2008 to 2009 in Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores. Respondents with weight loss (>1%, >3%, >5%) were compared with respondents with weight gain (≥1%). Multivariate regression adjusted for baseline characteristics. Results: Among those with T2DM, more respondents with weight loss (n = 779) improved their depression scores, compared with respondents with weight gain (n = 731): 32.9%, 36.9%, 39.8% for >1%, >3%, and >5% weight loss, respectively, vs. 28.7% for weight gain (p1%, 2.96 for >3%, and 3.31 for >5% weight loss, p < 0.01). Similar improvement in depression scores and severity of depression related to weight loss was observed among all SHIELD respondents (with and without T2DM). Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate an association between weight loss and improvement in depression over a 1-year period in adults with T2DM, and suggest the need for further investigation with respect to causality.

To evaluate the temporal patterns of N deficiencies in corn and assess the ability of remote sensing to diagnose N deficiencies during the vegetative growth of corn, three field-scale experiments were conducted with various rates (56, 112, and 168 kg N ha-1 ), timing (early and late applications) and placement (injected into soil and dribbled on soil surface) of N fertilization in a split-plot design. Relationships between canopy reflectance during the growing season and yield data at the end of growing season were studied for different treatments. Results showed significant variation in both grain yields and canopy reflectance among the three cornfields. The N fertilization made in early June resulted in low canopy reflectance in early July, but the differences disappeared as the season progressed. The effect of N rates on canopy reflectance was not significant in early July but it gradually became detectable in mid-July and thereafter. The fertilizer placement had a significant effect on grain yields only in one field but not on canopy reflectance in all three fields. These observations suggest that the deficiency of N developed under field conditions is a dynamic phenomenon, which adds complexity for accurately defining "N deficiency" and effectively developing management strategies for in-season correction. Remote sensing throughout the season helps collect information about important interactions that have not been given enough attention in the past.

In the 1980 s, a case–control epidemiologic study was conducted in Iowa（USA） to analyze the association between exposure to disinfection by-products（DBPs） and bladder cancer risk. Trihalomethanes（THMs）, the most commonly measured and dominant class of DBPs in drinking water, served as a primary metric and surrogate for the full DBP *** THM exposure was calculated, based on rough estimates of past levels in Iowa. To reduce misclassification, a follow-up study was undertaken to improve estimates of past THM levels and to re-evaluate their association with cancer risk. In addition, the risk associated with haloacetic acids, another class of DBPs, was examined. In the original analysis, surface water treatment plants were assigned one of two possible THM levels depending on the point of chlorination. The re-assessment considered each utility treating surface or groundwater on a case-by-case basis. Multiple treatment/disinfection scenarios and water quality parameters were considered with actual DBP measurements to develop estimates of past levels. The highest annual average THM level in the re-analysis was156 μg/L compared to 74 μg/L for the original analysis. This allowed the analysis of subjects exposed at higher levels（〉 96 μg/L）. The re-analysis established a new approach, based on case studies and an understanding of the water quality and operational parameters that impact DBP formation, for determining historical exposure.

A number of reports have indicated that a sizable percentage of the nation＇s experts in radiochemistry are nearing retirement age. This reality has been a concern since the 1970s, when declining numbers of radiochemists worldwide was first observed. Therefore, the NAMP （National Analytical Management Program） has organized a subcommittee focused on training and education in radiochemistry. To bolster interest and increase awareness in radiochemistry, NAMP is offering webinars developed by experts on different topics relevant to radiochemistry. This paper presents our accomplishments in developing these webinars and highlights our efforts in outreaching the national and international radiochemistry community.

This article summarizes a joint research projec undertaken under the Risk Management solutions, Inc(RMS) banner to investigate some of the possible approaches for agricultural risk modeling in China. Two modeling approaches were investigated—the simulated weather crop index and the burn yield analysis approach. The study was limited to Hunan Province and a single crop—rice. Both modeling approaches were dealt with probabilistically and were able to produce probabilistic risk metrics. Illustrative model outputs are also presented. The article discusses the robustness of the modeling approaches and their dependence on the availability, access to, and quality of weather and yield data. We offer our perspective on the requirements for models and platforms for agricultural risk quantification in China in order to respond to the needs of all stakeholders in agricultural risk transfer.

An experiment arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted on a Lexington soil (fine-silty,mixed,active,thermic,Ultic Hapludalfs) and a Loring soil (fine-silty,mixed,active,thermic,Oxyaquic Fragiudalfs) in Mississippi from September 1997 to September 2000 on 18 runoff plots under natural rainfall condition to study the phosphorus (P) dynamics in poultry litter amended soils under three management systems combining tillage and planting date treatments to identify effective management practices in southern *** management systems in the study were:1) tillage in the fall prior to litter application followed by a delayed planting of fall forages (CT-DP);2) tillage followed by immediate planting of the fall forage with subsequent litter application (CT-IP);and 3) no-till with planting prior to litter application (NT-IP).The results indicated that there was significant increase in soil P after 3 years of poultry litter application for both Lexington and Loring soils (P 90%),was accumulated in both *** Loring soil,soluble P mass in the runoff was significantly higher from NT-IP than from CT-DP and CT-IP over the entire study period (P < 0.01).For both soils,there were no significant differences in sediment P mass between management *** Loring soil,CT-DP and CT-IP were effective management practices to mitigate negative effects due to poultry litter application.

Mathematical modeling of unit operations especially in biomaterials processing plays an important part in understanding simultaneous heat and mass transfer and fluid flow phenomena. Hydrothermal/supercritical processes are one such process which utilizes high temperature and pressure to synthesize materials for varied applications. The present study constitutes development of a model incorporating all standard transport equations and transient conditions to predict the behavior of process and thus materials upon heating to high temperature in an enclosed composite (Steel and Teflon (PFA) vessel. Commercial software package SOLIDWORKS® is employed to simulate and output is presented as animations after post-processing. Results yield very useful data and information about process;materials of construction and materials being processed which helps in optimization.
