Noise Exposure Levels in Basic School Environments in a City in Ghana

Basic schools that are located in heavily populated residential and commercial areas in Ghana are exposed to environmental noise that can have detrimental effects on the academic attainments of children. Limited studies have been conducted on noise level in basic schools to date in Ghana. The objective of the study was to assess noise levels in and around learning spaces in basic schools in Ghana with a focus on Kumasi. A survey employing the use of interviews and an empirical monitoring of noise levels in and around learning spaces in four selected basic schools were adopted. The study revealed that mean outdoor and indoor noise levels exceed the World Health Organisation permissible limits by 30 - 40 percent and 90 - 107 percent respectively for schools in the commercial zones and schools that are located near highways. The school that is sited in an educational environment with a setback from the highway attained mean noise levels ranging from 1.2 percent below to 3.7 percent above the permissible limits for outdoor and between 64 - 105 percent for indoor. The outcome of the study is expected to engender the design of environmental noise resilient buildings to facilitate teaching and learning in basic schools in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE： Hawai＇i is an ethnically diverse island state with a high rate of both traditional healing （TH） and complementary and alternative medicine （CAM） use. The aim of this project was to assess TH and CAM use within the pediatric oncology population in Honolulu and improve the delivery of culturally competent care. METHODS： A 9-item survey was distributed to all pediatric oncology patients at Kapi＇olani Medical Center for Women and Children for 3 months. The survey inquired about patient ethnicity, TH practices CAM practices and perception of cultural competence of the care received. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the survey items. Qualitative analysis was done with participant comments to identify themes. RESULTS： Sixty-two surveys were completed. TH was used by 39% of the respondents in the home, and 10% in the hospital （top method was traditional foods）. CAM was used by 27% of the respondents in the home, and 68% in the hospital （top method was healing touch）. Ninety-seven percent of the respondents reported receiving culturally competent care. Areas for improvement included language services and dietary choices. CONCLUSION： CAM and TH are used frequently by pediatric oncology patients in Hawai＇i, and the vast majority of patients and families felt that the care they received was culturally competent.

Climate change is described as the most universal and irreversible environmental problem facing the planet Earth. While climate change is already manifesting in Ethiopia through changes in temperature and rainfall, its magnitude is poorly studied at regional levels. The objective of this paper was to assess and quantify the magnitude of future changes of climate parameters using Statistical Downscaling Mode (SDSM) version 4.2 in Amhara Regional State which is located between 8°45‘N and 13°45‘N latitude and 35°46‘E and 40°25‘E longitude. Daily climate data (1979- 2008) of rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures were collected from 10 observed meteorological stations (predictand). The stations were grouped and compared using clustering and Markov chain model, whereas the degree of climate change in the study area was estimated using the coupled HadCM3 general circulation model (GCM) with A2a emission scenarios (Predictors). Both maximum and minimum temperatures showed an increasing trend;the increase in mean maximum temperature ranges between 1.55°C and 6.07°C and that of the mean minimum temperature ranges from 0.11°C and 2.81°C. While the amount of annual rainfall and rainy days decreased in the study Regions in the 2080s. The negative changes in rainfall and temperature obtained from the HadCM3 model in the current study are alarming and suggest the need for further study with several GCM models to confirm the current results and develop adaptation options.

Objective: To report the experience of surgical caravans for urogenital fistulas care. Methodology: This was a retrospective study covering the period from January 2014 to December 2014 and which took place on 7 sites of fistula care. The epidemiological, anatomoclinical, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects were studied. Results: 346 patients were operated during 14 caravans. Their average age was 33.11 years (range: 12 to 70 years). Most of these patients were without remunerative activities (80%) and without education (63.3%). The average duration of fistula progression was 6.08 years (range: 0 to 42 years). Obstetrical etiology was predominant (87.9%). According to the classification of Kees Waaldijk, fistulas were divided into type I (67.4%), type II (21.1%), and type III (11.5%). The most common surgical approach was the transvaginal route (82.1%). The vesicovaginal splitting with separated suture of the bladder and the vagina was the basic technique (94.7%). The therapeutic results were judged after a follow-up of 1 month and 3 months. Across the cohort, 80 patients (23.1%) were lost of sight for follow-up at 1 month and 245 (70%) at 3 months. The success rates evaluated in patients reviewed at 1 month and 3 months were respectively 70% and 64%. Conclusion: The incidence of urogenital fistulas is still high in Cote d'Ivoire. Various anatomoclinical varieties have been identified and treated with satisfactory results in poorly equipped local structures.

Humans and animals can be exposed to Dioxins and Furans through ingestion of fatty food, skin contact, and breathing contaminated air. Resulting health problems include skin disease, immune problems, and cancers. Managing the release of these chemicals is therefore important. The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants requires parties to adopt measures that reduce sources of these chemicals. Sierra Leone developed its National Implementation Plan (NIP) in 2008, in compliance with this requirement. However, no known further steps have been taken, particularly at community level. In 2013, the UNDP’s GEF/SGP funded a pilot project to manage the release of Dioxins and Furans from two dumpsites in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This work was sponsored with funds from that project. The work sought to delineate the exposure of communities within and around the Bormeh-Kingtom dumpsite (Kingtom, Kolleh town, Ascension town, Crab town, and Congo town) to the chemicals. The study considered sources of exposure, relative quantities generated per year, and the routes of exposure. This exposure study is a first step in managing the release from those sources. Enumerators deployed at the dumpsite every day, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, for three months, quantifying and recording source materials. The amount of source materials dumped per day informed calculation of Dioxin/Furan releases in grams toxicity equivalence per year. The results revealed a release of 128.914 g TEQ/year in air and residue. This implies that the communities are at high risk of inhalation and dermal exposure. Livestock, mainly pigs, are also exposed as they feed on the waste deposited in the dumpsite. Humans in turn feed on the livestock, a recipe for biomagnification. The project team has been working on developing Best Management Practices to suppress the release of the chemicals.
