Effect of biochar on the metabolome of soybean seedlings

The use of biochar can have several effects on plant germination,depending on raw material,preparation method and application ***,the molecular mechanisms that lead to those results have yet to be *** aim of this research was to improve the understanding of these mechanisms by characterizing the metabolic effects of sugarcane bagasse biochar on soybean *** types of biochars were prepared by pyrolysis at 300℃(sCB300),400℃(sCB400)and 600℃(sCB600).Then,each one was mixed into sand at 1%,3%,5%(w/w)dose,*** experiment was performed in 8 days of incubation,when the number of germinated seeds and the average radicle length were *** evaluate the metabolome,the dry biomass(DB)was subjected to extraction with a mixture of methanol-d4 and D2O(1:1 v/v).The extracts were submitted to metabolomics analysis by proton Nuclear Magnetic *** Relative Germination,Relative Average Radicle Growth and Germination Index increased in all treatments compared to *** the other hand,the DB increased in all treatments,except for sCB300,at doses of 1%and 3%w/*** metabolites(alanine,asparagine,acetic acid,citric acid,glycerol,fatty acids and sucrose)were identified and quantified in DB extracts as the most influential finding for the separation of *** together,these results strongly suggested that biochars accelerated the catabolism of triacylglycerols to sucrose and induced a slight osmotic stress.

Impact Containment Barriers with Geotextile Tubes

Recently, tragic tailings dam collapses in Brazil have caused deaths and major destruction and the need to develop technologies capable of preventing damage to people and the environment. Brazilian tailings dams are in a situation of uncertainty due to new legislation that even requires decommissioning, an activity that involves many problems and where the risk of failure is the main one. An impact containment structure downstream of these dams can be effective and geotextile tubes, in a new approach, have emerged as an option with advantages in terms of execution, costs and safety. The technology is versatile and can bring many benefits such as the reuse of tailings or filling with low-energy or reused materials. In this research, geotextile tubes were tested as free containment barriers, experiencing impacts in reduced models. The safety factor for the stability of the structure was constructed using an equation which is the ratio between the self-weight of the barrier structure and its coefficient of static friction and the impact pressure, where the data showed an adequate correlation which suggests the viability of mitigating risks.

Ground penetrating radar (GpR) surveys have being applied to investigate very near-surface stratification of sedimentary units in coastal plains and to define their depositional conditions. This paper presents, however, low-frequency GpR survey to investigate fault-related depositional systems at greater depths. The Quinta-Cassino area in the Rio Grande do sul Coastal plain (RGsCp, Brazil) shows a wide strandplain that is made off by very long, continuous, and linear geomorphic features (beach ridges). This strandplain extends for ~70 km southward. The beach ridges show low-angle truncations against the Quinta escarpment, and also truncations in the strandplain. The traditional approach points that RGsCp was developed by juxtaposition of four lagoons/barrier systems as consequence of sea level changes;previous model assumes that no deformational episode occurred in RGsCp. The geophysical and geological surveys carried out in this area showed the existence of listric fault controlling the beach ridges in the escarpments and hanging-wall blocks. The radargrams could distinguish pleistocene basement unit anticlockwise rotation, thickening of beach ridges radarfacies close to listric normal faults, and horst structures. These deformational features indicate that the extensional zone of a large-scale gravity-driven structure controlled the mechanical subsidence, the Holocene sedimentation and its stratigraphic and geomorphic features in the Quinta-Cassino area to build up an asymmetric delta. The results point to a new approach in dealing with RGsCp Holocene evolution.

Growth of Variable Aspect Ratio ZnO Nanorods by solochemical processing

In this work,variable aspect ratio（length divided by diameter） zinc oxide nanorods were synthesized through a simple solochemical method by reacting a Zn2+precursor with sodium hydroxide at low reaction *** analysis of the X-ray diffraction data indicated that the samples had hexagonal wurtzite structure and nanometric size *** transmission electron microscopy（Tem） images of the products prepared at60 and 80 ℃ exhibited rod-like architecture,showing that the reaction temperature did not affect the ZnO *** average aspect ratio of the ZnO nanorods decreased from 3.4 to 2.4 when the reaction temperature was raised from 60 to 80 ℃.The samples presented a blue shift in the excitonic absorption compared to ZnO bulk that increased alongside with reaction *** addition,this research investigated the results obtained by varying the concentration of zinc chloride *** the same temperature,it could be verified that when the zinc concentration was increased,the diameter of the ZnO nanorods also slightly increased,and much shorter nanorods were achieved,especially in the reactions performed at 50 and 70 ℃.Finally,the growth mechanism of the ZnO nanostructures was proposed based on the results obtained by changing the zinc precursor concentration and reaction temperature.

Remarks on the application of two-dimensional shape factors under severe wear conditions

The use of two-dimensional shape parameters to characterize abrasive particles is a potential approach to express their angularity. Nevertheless, in sliding abrasion, especially in pin abrasion testing, these descriptors could not be suitable for characterizing severe wear of engineering materials such as steels and cast irons. This work compares the applicability of two-dimensional shape parameters in describing severe wear of metals in recent pin abrasion tests with cases where they could have been correlated with the wear rates. Considering these aspects, this work puts in evidence the importance of clogging occurrence and the coated paper structure for a carefully application of shape parameters. In addition, it is proposed a possible relation between the shape parameters and one of the components of the abrasion factor.

perceptions About Climate Change in the Brazilian civil defense sector

Few studies have analyzed climate change perceptions in the disaster risk management *** research aimed to understand how civil defense experts are dealing with the climate change topic:what they learn and think *** online survey was conducted between October and december 2021 with 1,063 participants from civil defense agencies in *** findings indicate:(1) most(80.6%) civil defense officers completely agreed that climate change will cause additional challenges to disaster risk management,while 10.1% stated that they are prepared to deal with it;(2) one quarter of the respondents(26.3%) completely agreed that they easily understand the information about climate change,but trust in the sources of information is a challenge-52.4% completely agreed and 40.5% partially agreed with information provided by scientists,but the levels of trust were reduced when referring to governments and press;and(3) about 30% of the respondents thought that civil defense work is associated with the sustainable development Goals(sDGs),despite sDGs 11 and 13 being related to disasters and climate *** identification of civil defense’ perceptions on climate change is an important step in seeking pathways for increasing capacity building to achieve disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi（AMF） are important during revegetation of mining sites, but few studies compared AMF community in revegetated sites with pristine adjacent ecosystems. The aim of this study was to assess AMF species richness in a revegetated iron-mining site and adjacent ecosystems and to relate AMF occurrence to soil chemical parameters. soil samples were collected in dry and rainy seasons in a revegetated iron-mining site（RA） and compared with pristine ecosystems of forest（FL）, canga（NG）,and Cerrado（CE）. AMF species were identified by spore morphology from field and trap cultures and by LsU r DNA sequencing using Illumina. A total of 62 AMF species were recovered, pertaining to 18 genera and nine families of Glomeromycota. The largest number of species and families were detected in RA, and Acaulospora mellea and Glomus sp1 were the most frequent species. species belonging to Glomeraceae and Acaulosporaceae accounted for 42%–48% of total species richness. Total number of spores and mycorrhizal inoculum potential tended to be higher in the dry than in the rainy season, except in RA. sequences of uncultured Glomerales were dominant in all sites and seasons and five species were detected exclusively by DNA-based identification. Redundancy analysis evidenced soil p H,organic matter, aluminum, and iron as main factors influencing AMF presence. In conclusion, revegetation of the iron-mining site seems to be effective in maintaining a diverse AMF community and different approaches are complementary to reveal AMF species, despite the larger number of species being identified by traditional identification of field spores.

The response of an optical strain sensor based on the fiber Bragg grating is theoretically analyzed with a different approach of that found usually in the literature. In this model, geometrical changes suffered by the grating itself are taken into account. The results are compared with those from experiments, showing very good agreement.

Use of Caffeine for the Evaluation of the Anthropic Influence over the Upper and Middle Iguaçu River Basins

Many parameters are usually used as gauges to describe water quality worldwide, such as the concentrations of phosphorus, forms of nitrogen, dissolved oxygen (DO), among others. Though legislative limits for the concentrations of these substances are in place, such is not the case for caffeine. Caffeine is a pharmacologically active alkaloid, from the xanthine group, which can be used as a chemical tracer for anthropic influence over water resources. The objective of this study was to analyze the pollution indicators over the Igua?u River, one of the main rivers in southern Brazil, through the examination of nutrients, DO and their correlations to caffeine. The water samples were collected from 10 sampling sites along the river course, unevenly spaced to better represent the different environmental scenarios present in its basin, extracted from 2014 to 2017. Caffeine was detected and quantified through high-efficiency liquid state chromatography. Results show that both nutrient and caffeine concentrations increased in intensely urbanized areas, specially from IG2 to IG5 sampling sites. Downstream from IG6 the contaminant concentrations decreased mainly due to higher river flows and lower population density. Caffeine was detected in 82% of the samples, indicating that most of the sampling sites were under anthropic influence.
