Chronic exposure to ethanol causes steatosis and inflammation in zebrafish liver

In many taxa,individuals voluntarily detach a body part as a form to increase their chances of escaping *** defense mechanism,known as autotomy,has several consequences,such as changes in locomotor performance that may affectﬁ*** of the genus Ananteris autotomize the“tail”,which in fact corresponds to the last abdominal *** autotomy,individuals lose nearly 25%of their body mass and the last portion of the digestive tract,including the anus,which prevents defecation and leads to constipation,because regeneration does not ***,we experimentally investigated the short-and long-term effects of tail loss on the locomotor performance of Ananteris *** a short-term experiment,the maximum running speed(MRs)of males and females did not change after ***,the relative mass of the lost tail did not affect the change in MRs after *** a long-term experiment,autotomy had a negative effect on the MRs of males,but not of *** over-fed individuals suffered from severe constipation but were not slower than autotomized normally fed *** conclusion,tail loss has no immediate effect on the locomotor performance of *** long-term decrease in the locomotor performance of autotomized males may impair mate ***,because death by constipation takes several months,males have a long time toﬁnd mates and ***,the prolonged period between autotomy and death by constipation is crucial for understanding the evolution of one of the most extreme cases of autotomy in nature.

Genome-Wide Identification and Characterization of the <i>Dof</i>Transcription Factor Gene Family in <i>phaseolus vulgaris</i>L.

The Dof (DNA-binding with one finger) proteins are a class of plant-specific transcription factors that can trigger several processes involved in plant growth and development, as well as in stress responses. Here, we performed a systematic bioinformatics analysis to characterize all Dof genes in common bean, which included analysis of the genome sequence, conserved protein domains, chromosomal locations, subcellular locations, phylogenetic relationships, gene duplications, and gene expression profiles in different tissues. Bioinformatics analysis revealed 36 putative genes related to pvDof that were classified into seven subfamilies (A, B1, B2, C1, C2, D1, and, D2) by comparative phylogenetic analysis. Based on our genome duplication analysis, a total of 36 genes were found to be distributed on all 11 chromosomes, and they expanded through gene duplication in tandem, suggesting the involvement of segmental duplication events in the evolutionary process. synteny events and phylogenetic comparisons of the Dof proteins of common bean with those of A. thaliana, O. sativa, and G. max L. led to the identification of several orthologous and paralogous genes, which provided further insight into the diversity of the evolutionary characteristics of genes of this family in other plant species. Expression profiles revealed that most of the pvDof genes were expressed in different tissues, indicating that pvDof genes may be involved in various physiological functions during plant development. The results of this study provide additional information and potential biotechnological resources for further understanding the molecular basis of this gene family and consequently improvement of common bean crops.

A study of pollen morphology, in species of the genera Bauhinia and phanera (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae) which occur in the Brazilian caatinga, is presented. The pollen was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. samples were prepared by the KOH method;non-treated pollen grains were examined by scanning electron microscopy. pollen grains in Bauhinia species (11) are colpate, but porate in B. cheilantha and B. subclavata. All four species of phanera present colporate pollen grains;p. outimouta is the only to have syncolporate pollen grains. species of both genera present heteromorphism in the number of apertures. Excepting p. outimouta whose pollen grains are psilate, all species in the two genera present supratectal processes (gemmae/clavae), however the exine in the two genera are dif- ferent–semitectate, reticulate in Bauhinia species, and tectate, rugulate (or psilate) in phanera ones. pollen characters support the segregation of phanera from Bauhinia.

Accelerated Aging in Tomato seeds

The tomato plant (Lycopersicum esculentum L.) is a perennial, shrubby-like vegetable with high reproductive ability, which behaves like a typical annual crop. The aim of this work was to select suitable tests to assess the quality of different lots of tomato seeds. six batches of tomato seeds were assessed for parameter values: moisture content, germination, first count, accelerated aging (standard: 40 mL of water;saline solution: 11 g NaCl/100mL of water and saturated saline solution: 40 g NaCl/100mL water) and seedling emergence in soil. Accelerated aging through the use of saturated salt solution for 48 h or 72 h at 41°C resulted in an alternative and efficient way to evaluate the physiological quality of tomato seeds. The standard accelerated aging test was less efficient and exhibited higher moisture variation.

Bird habitat preferences drive hemoparasite infection in the Neotropical region

The role that the environment plays in vector-borne parasite infection is one of the central factors for understanding disease *** assessed how Neotropical bird foraging strata and habitat preferences determine infection by parasites of the genera Haemoproteus,plasmodium,Leucocytozoon,and Trypanosoma and filarioids,and tested for phylogenetic signal in these host-parasite *** performed extensive searches of the scientific literature and created a database of hemoparasite *** collected data on host body mass,foraging strata,habitat preference,and migratory status,and tested if host ecological traits predict each hemoparasite occurrence and prevalence using a phylogenetic Bayesian *** of plasmodium tend to infect birds from tropical forests while birds from altitudinal environments are likely to be infected by species of *** probability of a bird being infected by filarioid or Trypanosoma is higher in lowland *** species that occur in anthropic environments and dry habitats of tropical latitudes are more susceptible to infection by species of *** foraging strata is also influential and bird species that forage in the mid-high and canopy strata are more prone to infection by species of Haemoproteus and *** also identified phylogenetic signal for host-parasite associations with the probability of infection of Neotropical birds by any hemoparasite being more similar among more closely related *** provided a useful framework to identify environments that correlate with hemoparasite infection,which is also helpful for detecting areas with potential suitability for hemoparasite infection due to land conversion and climate change.

Antibacterial activity and inhibition against staphylococcus aureus NorA efflux pump by ferulic acid and its esterified derivatives

Objective:To evaluate the inhibitory activity of ferulic acid and four of its esterified derivatives(methyl,ethyl,propyl,and butyl)against resistance mechanisms in staphylococcus aureus ***:Ferulic acid derivatives were obtained by esterification with methanol,ethanol,propanol,and butanol,and then characterized by hydrogen and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance *** minimum inhibitory concentrations(MIC)of ferulic acid and its esterified derivatives,ethidium bromide,and norfloxacin were obtained using the microdilution test,while the efflux pump inhibition test was conducted by examining reduction in the MICs of norfloxacin and ethidium *** docking was also carried out using the schrodinger suite 2015 molecular modeling software.A three-dimensional model of NorA efflux pump was generated using *** best scoring model was used as a receptor for ligand-receptor ***:The methyl and butyl ester derivatives did not demonstrate significant antimicrobial ***,a significant synergic effect was evidenced when norfloxacin was combined with the ethyl and propyl esterified *** docking study demonstrated favorable energy of interaction between ferulate derivatives and NorA,and amino acid residues TYR57,TYR58,and LEU255 were present commonly in stabilizing all *** pCA analysis corroborated the docking hypothesis that the lipophilic character and hydrogen bond interactions were the most relevant characteristics involved with NorA *** pharmacokinetic parameters of ferulic acid derivatives showed good ADMET properties,demonstrating that they can be easily absorbed and have no effect or inhibit the cytochrome p450 enzyme complex,revealing their potential as drug ***:This study provides strong evidence that the molecular basis for this activity is potentially due to the NorA efflux pump.

Aims Our objective was to quantify the contributions of the seed bank and the established vegetation to the species composition,functional composition and diversity,and discuss the implications of these differences in regeneration and persistence of floodplain plant *** We sampled all ground cover vegetation up to 1.5 m height and seed bank in 25 plots(10 m×1 m)distributed across five sites in dry and rainy seasons in a periodically flooded savanna in the pantanal wetland,*** evaluated the soil seed bank by seedling emergence *** Findings The seed bank species had traits that conferred regeneration to the communities,while persistence traits characterized the *** seed bank had higher functional richness and lower functional evenness than the *** existence of different plant traits between seed bank and vegetation allowed the coexistence of species with functionally contrasting persistence and regeneration traits,which may help maintain functional *** may allow the community to be more resilient when dealing with different environmental filters such as drought,fire and flood.
