Oral focal mucinosis is an uncommon non-neoplastic lesion of unknown etiology. We presented a unique case of a sessile, well-demarcated gingival nodule adjacent to the right mandibular first molar of a young girl submitted to orthodontic treatment that was diagnosed as oral focal mucinosis. The probably etiopathogenesis of this lesion in orthodontic patient is discussed.

This paper reports the clinical experience of a multi-center, multiple physician trial with a novel fractional radiofrequency ablative skin resurfacing and rejuvenation device (Fractora, Invasix, Israel) deployed on both Caucasian skin types I - III and Asian skin type IV. Histological study demonstrated deep ablation and collagen restructuring in the papillary and reticular dermis. The Fractora device combines the more “cone shaped” ablation seen with CO2 and Erbium lasers with a deep non-ablative heating pattern, seen with other bipolar RF fractional needle resurfacing devices. Ablation, coagulation zones and healing dynamics are analyzed for different energy settings. Two different treatment protocols are suggested: one for light skin and then one for darker skin with a higher risk of post-inflammatory hypperpigmentation. Treatment results show improvement in skin texture, pores, wrinkles and skin dyschromia.

This study was undertaken to examine which factors contributed to the correction of crowding in two patients who underwent nonextraction orthodontic treatment. A study model analysis was conducted to determine the effects of the orthodontic treatment for crowding with high canines on crown angulation and dental arch width in two patients. The results showed that the crown angulation was significantly increased, indicating distal tipping in the maxillary dental arch. This tendency was most commonly observed in the premolars among the lateral teeth. With respect to the dental arch width, the largest change was evident in the first molar and first premolar regions in cases 1 and 2, respectively. On the basis of these results, up-righting of mesially tipped lateral teeth and expansion of narrow dental arches could prove to be the keys to the success of space regaining or correction of high canines and mild crowding.

Intrduction: Edema, Hypertension and Hypokalemia occur with inhibition of 11 B-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Type 2 (11B-HSD2) by chronic Licorice ingestion. However, a similar presentation following a chronic use of another commonly used sweetener “Stevia” is not reported. Objective: To document a first case report of a subject presenting with Edema, Prehypertension and Hypokalemia induced by 11B-HSD2 inhibition induced by chronic ingestion of sweetener stevia. Case Report: 32 year old Caucasian woman presented with generalized edema (feet, hands and face) of over 6 months. She was noted to also manifest Prehypertension (138/88 mmHg) and Hypokalemia (3.4 mM/l). Laboratory tests revealed decline in serum aldosterone and plasma renin activity, an increase in plasma cortisol/cortisone ratio. On persistent interrogation, patient admitted to daily consumption of sweetener stevia for over 9 months. All the presenting manifestations resolved with normalization of the laboratory tests on withdrawal of stevia. Conclusion: This case report indicates that chronic ingestion of sweetener stevia may induce edema, hypertension and hypokalemia via reduced conversion of cortisol into cortisone by inhibition of 11 B-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Type 2.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a respiratory sleep disorder characterized by repeated episodes of complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway. OSAS has a frequency of 4 percent and is classified according to the number of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea episodes. The OSAS diagnostic path starts with the evaluation of the patient’s clinical framework and follows an instrumental procedure, depending on the clinical severity of the patient. Dental practitioners have the ability to intercept early on the signs and symptoms of OSAS. At the same time, they can assess whether the patient has the indications for treatment with specific oral devices (Oral Appliances, OA). The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance for dental management of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in adult individuals.

Aesthetic medicine is not a new area of medicine. It has been on the world’s market for several dozen years. Aesthetic and anti-aging medicine is a separate field of medicine combined with other areas such as: neurology, plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, psychology, psychiatry, dermatology, gynaecology, andrology, endocrinology and so on. Aesthetic medicine is an area of medicine, dealing with human’s health in terms of: external appearance, image, aesthetics, well-being, visible skin changes and discomfort in the quality of life felt by a patient. The purpose of aesthetic medicine is to achieve patients’ satisfaction, as to their requirements related to the appearance, elimination of the complexes and the restoration of self-esteem. The following work shows, based on the overall impact of aesthetic medicine on the lives of patients and on the basis of the characteristics of some basic treatments in aesthetic medicine (fillers, botulinum toxin type A, intralipotherapy, needle mesotherapy, chemical peels), how this area of medicine is linked with other specialties and why it should be treated as a separate field of medicine.

The conditions in which we live nowadays contribute to exposure of our bodies to harmful factors such as UV radiation, pollution, smoking, poor eating habits, low physical activity, stress, which thereafter lead to the acceleration of skin aging process. In women, the process is additionally dependent on the menopause, as a result of the disappearance of hormones, the process is faster. Physiological changes that occur in women’s body during perimenopausal and menopausal period affect their sexual function: pain during an intercourse, decreased libido, lack of agitation. Deficiency of hormones, besides skin changes, leads to vaginal dryness, accompanied by inflammation, often correlated with discharge and burning. As a result of the loss of hyaluronic acid labia become slack and less moisturized. In addition, there has been observed: a gradual loss of pigment and hair, involution of the clitoris, and involution and sticking of labia minora, lipoatrophy of labia majora with subsequent reduction in their volume and thinning the lining around the vaginal opening. This article presents processes of skin aging. It describes mechanisms of intrinsic and extrinsic aging. It also presents the mechanisms of accelerated aging in women in perimenopausal period—accelerated skin aging dependent on hormonal factors associated with the loss of ovarian function. The research presents how the hormonal loss influences woman’s body, her genitals—its functionality and aesthetic look. It also shows how using filler treatments in gynecology can restore the aesthetic appearance of female genital and improve their functionality.

Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to answer the question “Which treatment protocol, am- ong classical methods and/or various laser applica- tions is the most effective in root canal disinfection, in vitro”. Materials and Methods: A MEDLINE, a Co- chrane and an Embase search (three specified search- es) were conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCT) until June 2010, conducted on human teeth and published in English, German or French language, examining the root canal disinfection after the use of lasers with or without mechanical instru-mentation. Additionally, hand search was conducted and contact with authors, when needed. Results: The MEDLINE, the Cochrane and the EMBASE search identified 240, 28, and 35 published articles, respec-tively. Ten articles from the MEDLINE and 5 articles from the Cochrane search (that were also identified in the MEDLINE search) met the inclusion and va-lidity assessment criteria. In E. faecalis elimination, instrumentation of the root canal and diode laser/665 nanometer/1 Watt (diode laser/665 nm/1 W) irradia-tion with the combined effect of Methylene Blue (MB) as photosensitizing agent (logCFU/ml = 1636) seemed to be the best method. In P. aeruginosa and in *** elimination, instrumentation of the root canal followed by irrigation with 5, 25% NaOCl (log-CFU/ml = 0) seemed to be the best method. In gen-eral, instrumentation of the root canal followed by irrigation with 5, 25% NaOCl (logCFU/ml = 0) and instrumentation of the root canal and Er: YAG laser/ 2940 nm/0.8 W irradiation (logCFU/ml = 1924) seemed to be the best (polymicrobial studies). Conclusions: There are treatment protocols with the assistance or not of laser irradiation that can eliminate E. faecalis, E. coli and S. aureus inside the root canal. However, there is a serious number of S. anginosus, F. nuclea-tum, A. naeslundii and P. aeruginosa that remain in-side the root canal even after laser irradiation. New research is needed in order
