Histologic evaluation of bone healing of adjacent alveolar sockets grafted with bovineand porcine-derived bone:a comparative case report in humans

To evaluate and compare histomorphometrically the bone response to two xenografts,one bovine and the other porcine,grafted in adjacent extraction sockets in a *** this case report,two adjacent maxillary premolars were extracted,and the sockets were filled with two different xenogeneic bone substitutes(first premolar with bovine bone,and second premolar with porcine bone)to counteract post-extraction volume *** 6 months bone core specimens were harvested during the placement of implants at the regenerated ***,for the bovine xenograft the percentage of newly formed bone(osteoid)was 26.85%,the percentage of the residual graft material was 17.2%and the percentage of connective tissue 48.73%,while for the porcine xenograft,newly formed bone(osteoid)represented 32.19%,residual graft material was 6.57%and non-mineralized connective tissue was 52.99%.Histological results indicated that both biomaterials assessed in this study as grafts for socket preservation technique are biocompatible and *** bone derived demonstrated to be less resorbable than porcine bone *** xenogenic biomaterials did not interfere with the normal bone reparative processes.

Objectives: The objective is to determine whether there are differences in the position of the hyoid bone at rest in natural head position in subjects with mandibular hyperdivergence and to evaluate whether there are differences in hyoid position and antegonial notch depth in mandibular hyperdivergent males and females. Methods and Materials: This is a retrospective cohort study involving a review of lateral cephalometric radiographs of 45 adult men and women with mandibular hyperdivergency. Hyperdivergency was determined by cephalometric ranges of: SN-GoGn as least +2 SD from normal, Y-axis, PP-GoGN, and gonial angle greater than +1SD from normal. A group of 45 normodivergent adults served as a control, with cephalometric ranges of: SN-GoGn within ±1 SD of normal, with only one measurement of the other three between +1 and +1.5 standard deviations. AIM:To determine the accuracy of tomography in the linear measurement of alveolar bone at maxillary sinus/nose ***:Two dry skulls each marked with 10 pairs of guttaperchas placed on buccal and lingual sides of the maxillary ridge were used in this in vitro *** distance between the alveolar crest and the sinus/nasal floor was measured on tomographic views,prepared by linear and spiral *** ridges were then sectioned so that each section would include one pair of buccal and lingual *** actual distances directly measured on the sections were compared to those of the equivalent tomographic sections(the magnification co-efficient was applied).Paired t-test was used to statistically analyze the ***:The measurement error with the application of linear tomography and spiral tomography wasshown to be 0.455±0.838 mm(P=0.029)and 0.17±0.78 mm(P=0.347),*** was a statistically significant difference between the liner tomography values and actual values(P=0.029).This difference was representative of ***’s test was used to assess the±1 mm error;73.7%of the linear values and 84.2%of the spiral values were within the±1 mm error *** Namara’s test did not show any significant differences between the 2methods in this regard(P=0.625).The linear values were significantly different to the actual values(P=0.029)but not to the spiral values(P=0.185).CONCLUSION:Spiral tomography has enough accuracy for the measurement of alveolar ridge *** linear tomography somewhat underestimates the actual values it provides satisfactory accuracy.

Background: Four factors determine the quality of an implantology kit: 1) Heat generated by the drills;2) Morphology of the osteotomy according to the diameter of the implant;3) Efficiency of collecting autologous bone;and 4) Osteotomy execution time. Materials and Methods: This article examines the heat produced by drills during osteotomy, focusing on the effect of the following factors: drilling technique;volume of autologous bone harvested;drilling time;implant primary stability;and the percentage of osseointegrated implants after primary healing. Discussion: The four factors mentioned above are analyzed based on the data obtained for sequential, biological, and One Drill milling techniques. Conclusions: 1) One Drill is the fastest technique for performing the osteotomy;2) All techniques stay within the biological temperature range of living bone, with the lowest increase in temperature achieved using One Drill with irrigation;3) The bone harvested showed no statistically significant differences between biological milling and the One Drill technique, both far superior to the sequential technique;and 4) There is no statistically significant difference in the number of osseointegrated implants among the three techniques analyzed.

Despite the outstanding progress in dentistry, there are still a great number of edentulous patients world-wide, what’s more, the dentists are not willing to inform the patients about their handicapped condition. Elderly people do not complain about this a lot, and also unfortunately the general public and government authorities do not concerne too much about gerodontic issues. The elderly people has suffered greatly from this. dental implant is one way to figure this out. The Ukrainian dental implant Association has initiated a professional voluntary project entitled: “Quality of Life for our Parents”. This geriatric welfare program offers free implant and Prosthetic rehabilitation for the Elderly edentulous patients.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a respiratory sleep disorder characterized by repeated episodes of complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway. OSAS has a frequency of 4 percent and is classified according to the number of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea episodes. The OSAS diagnostic path starts with the evaluation of the patient’s clinical framework and follows an instrumental procedure, depending on the clinical severity of the patient. dental practitioners have the ability to intercept early on the signs and symptoms of OSAS. At the same time, they can assess whether the patient has the indications for treatment with specific oral devices (Oral Appliances, OA). The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance for dental management of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in adult individuals.

Use of ultrasonography(US) in dentomaxillofacial region became popular in recent years owing to increasing radiation dose concerns and economic limitations. It helps to visualize fine detail of the surface structure of the oral and maxillofacial tissues without ionizing radiation. In diagnostic ultrasound,high frequency sound waves are transmitted into the body by a transducer and echoes from tissue interface are detected and displayed on a screen. Sound waves are emitted via piezoelectric crystals from the ultrasound transducer. US technique can be used in dentomaxillofacial region for the examination of bone and superficial soft tissue,detection of major salivary gland lesions,temporomandibular joint imaging,assessment of fractures and vascular lesions,lymph node examination,measurement of the thickness of muscles and visualization of vessels of the neck. It has the potential to be used in the evaluation of periapical lesions and follow up of periapical bone healing. Also,it may be used for the evaluation of periodontal pocket depth and for the determination of gingival thickness before dental implantology.

Another Look at Skeletal Maturation Using Hand Wrist and Cervical Vertebrae Evaluation

Introduction and Aims—The Growth stage of a patient can have considerable influence on diagnosis, treatment goals, timing and planning and the eventual outcome of orthodontic/orthopedic treatment. The purpose of this study was to analyze associations between the cervical vertebrae maturation score (CVMS) and skeletal maturation index (SMI). The second objective was to determine the reproducibility of the measurements on lateral cephalograms and hand-wrist radiographs. Materials and Methods—Lateral cephalometric and left hand-wrist radiographs of 92 untreated subjects (44 females and 48 males) aged from 8 to 17 years were obtained from the files of the Columbia University, Division of Orthodontics and measured for growth stage using cervical vertebrae and hand-wrist methods. Results—A high correlation was revealed between the hand-wrist and cervical vertebrae measurements. The Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient was 0.925 and significant at the 0.01 level. The correlation between hand-wrist and age (0.665, p < 0.01) was slightly greater than that of the CVMS (0.611, p < 0.01). Intra rater reliability was high. When the three categorically modified methods of the Fishman’s 11 skeletal maturation stages in hand and wrist analysis were used to compare with CVMS, methods 2 and 3 were both statistically significantly different according to the Wilcoxon signed ranks test and the Sign test at a significance level of less than 0.05. However, for method 1, the tests showed probability scores of 0.028 and 0.151, respectively, showing no significant difference at the 0.01 level in the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, and no significant difference in the 0.01 and 0.05 level in the Signed Test. Conclusions—The Fishman’s hand and wrist skeletal maturation index and Bacetti’s cervical vertebrae maturation stages are both useful tools in evaluating growth stages. Fishman’s hand-wrist method is slightly more accurate.
