This comprehensive review embarks on a captivating journey into the complex relationship between cardiology and normal-tension glaucoma(NTG),a condition that continues to baffle clinicians and researchers alike.NTG,characterized by optic nerve damage and visual field loss despite normal intraocular pressure,has long puzzled clinicians.One emerging perspective suggests that alterations in ocular blood flow,particularly within the optic nerve head,may play a pivotal role in its pathogenesis.While NTG shares commonalities with its high-tension counterpart,its unique pathogenesis and potential ties to cardiovascular health make it a fascinating subject of exploration.It navigates through the complex web of vascular dysregulation,blood pressure and perfusion pressure,neurovascular coupling,and oxidative stress,seeking to uncover the hidden threads that tie the heart and eyes together in NTG.This review explores into the intricate mechanisms connecting cardiovascular factors to NTG,shedding light on how cardiac dynamics can influence ocular health,particularly in cases where intraocular pressure remains within the normal range.NTG's enigmatic nature,often characterized by seemingly contradictory risk factors and clinical profiles,underscores the need for a holistic approach to patient care.Drawing parallels to cardiac health,we examine into the shared vascular terrain connecting the heart and the eyes.Cardiovascular factors,including systemic blood flow,endothelial dysfunction,and microcirculatory anomalies,may exert a profound influence on ocular perfusion,impacting the delicate balance within the optic nerve head.By elucidating the subtle clues and potential associations between cardiology and NTG,this review invites clinicians to consider a broader perspective in their evaluation and management of this elusive condition.As the understanding of these connections evolves,so too may the prospects for early diagnosis and tailored interventions,ultimately enhancing the quality of life for those living with NTG.

A review of whole-medical systems and holistic care approach for type 2 diabetes and associated metabolic syndrome

Whole-person care and holistic care approach has been proposed for complementary and integrative health care for type 2 diabetes mellitus.However,some doubts still exist on the feasibility of replicating processes followed in clinical trials and observational studies in real-world settings.This narrative literature review summarized and assessed existing clinical evidence(clinical trials,observational studies,and case reports)describing holistic and integrated care approach in adult and adolescent individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus in clinical practice.The goal was to highlight existing evidence for implementation and outcomes of whole-medical systems and holistic integrated care approach for type 2 diabetes mellitus.A nonsystematic literature search was performed on Google Scholar,PubMed,Web of Science,ProQuest and ScienceDirect to identify clinical evidence from different parts of the world,evaluating the use of whole-medical systems and/or holistic care interventions in clinical practice for management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.Relevant keywords were used in the search.Data were analyzed using content analysis and simple descriptive statistics(percentages).Most of the studies(64%)were mainly conducted in Eastern countries(India,China and Israel)while 36%of the studies were conducted in the Western countries(USA,Netherlands,Canada and Mexico).Lifestyle medicine and integrated naturopathy were shown to be the commonly used whole-medical systems for type 2 diabetes mellitus management.Significant improvements in type 2 diabetes parameters,medication use,other symptoms,and overall feeling of wellness were observed in all studies.This review study revealed limited utilization and/or documentation of whole-medical systems or holistic care treatments for type 2 diabetes mellitus in regions of the world other than eastern countries.Lifestyle medicine,naturopathy,yoga,Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine were shown to be effective for type 2 diabetes mellitus,either as an alternative or as a complementary

Mediating Effect of Mindfulness,Self-Esteem and Psychological Resilience in the Relation between Childhood Maltreatment and Life Satisfaction

Childhood maltreatment,as a typical early adverse environment,is known to have a negative impact on one’s life satisfaction.Mindfulness,on the other hand,may serve as a protective factor.This study explored the mediating role of mindfulness and its related variables–positive thoughts,psychological resilience and self-esteem.In order to testify the mechanism,we administered Childhood Trauma Questionnaire(CTQ),Satisfaction with Life Scale(SWLS),Mindful Attention Awareness Scale(MAAS),Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale(CD-RISC)and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(RSES)to a non-clinical sample of Chinese university students(N=1021).The results indicated that positive thoughts did not mediate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and life satisfaction,but self-esteem(β=−0.194,95%CI=[−0.090,−0.040])and psychological resilience(β=−0.063,95%CI=[−0.059,−0.020])mediated the relationship,as well as the“mindfulness-selfesteem”(β=−0.061,95%CI=[−0.287,−0.126])and“mindfulness-psychological resilience”(β=−0.035,95%CI=[−0.115,−0.034]).The results of this study were helpful to understand the relationship between childhood maltreatment and life satisfaction and provided a theoretical basis for the development of mindfulness intervention programs from the perspective of positive psychology.

Case of takotsubo cardiomyopathy after surgical treatment of liver hydatid cyst: A case report

BACKGROUND Takotsubo cardiomyopathy,also called apical ballooning syndrome,is a disease that is often triggered by stress factors in postmenopausal women and mimics acute coronary syndrome.The aim of this article is to draw attention to takotsubo cardiomyopathy after surgical treatment of liver hydatid cyst.CASE SUMMARY A 50-year-old diabetic and hypertensive female patient was evaluated preoperatively before general surgery for liver hydatid cyst,and no cardiac problems were found.The patient was discharged on the 3rd postoperative day without any postoperative complications.On postoperative day 5,the patient presented to the emergency department with fever,shortness of breath,chills,and shivering and was hospitalized with the diagnosis of pneumonia.The troponin levels remained high during follow-up.Echocardiography was performed on postoperative day 7,after which the patient was referred to a tertiary center with the diagnosis of non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction due to akinesia in the apical region.Coronary angiography performed at the tertiary center showed normal coronary anatomy,and the patient was diagnosed with takotsubo cardiomyopathy.CONCLUSION Takotsubo cardiomyopathy mimicking myocardial infarction without ST segment elevation may develop after surgical treatment of liver hydatid cyst.

Antitumor effect of thymoquinone combined with resveratrol on mice transplanted with breast cancer

Objective:To test the anticancer potential activity of the combination of thymoquinone(TQ)and resveratrol(RES) against breast cancer in mice.Methods:The antiproliferative activity of TQ.RES and their combination was assessed against three breast cancer cell lines and one normal cells using MTT assay.The combination index was calculated using isobolographic method.Balb/C mice were inoculated with EMT6/P cells and in vivo antitumor activity was evaluated.Results:The combination therapy caused significant decrease in tumor size with a percentage cure of 60%.The combination therapy induced geographic necrosis,enhanced apoptosis,and decreased VEGF expression.Serum levels of IFN-y were elevated in mice treated with combination therapy with no liver and kidney toxicity.Conclusions:The combination of TQ and RES against breast cancer in mice can work synergistically.The anticancer effect of this combination is mediated by apoptosis induction,angiogenesis inhibition and immune modulation.

Fasting and Cancer: Practice and Patients’ Quality of Life during Ramadan

Introduction: Ramadan is the ninth lunar month of the Muslim calendar, and fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslim cancer patients and health professionals are faced with a dilemma between the necessity of fasting and its possible adverse effects during Ramadan on the health status of cancer patients. We believe that addressing the issue of fasting in cancer patients is of global interest. Objectives: Prevalence of fasting in cancer patients during Ramadan;Predictive factors of Ramadan fasting in cancer patients;The effect of fasting during Ramadan on the quality of life of cancer patients. Materials and Methods: A structured questionnaire was used to interview adult cancer patients who received chemotherapy IV—or oral treatment at the medical oncology department at the Hassan II University Hospital in Fez during the month of Ramadan 1443 Hijri (April to May 2022). The quality of cancer patients’ lives during their fasting practice in Ramadan was evaluated via the QLQ-C30 questionnaires. Results: 48% of patients did not fast during Ramadan, 22% and 30% were partial and complete fasters respectively. Patients, with OMS 0 to 1, who receive outpatient treatment, non-metastatic patients and patients on oral treatment were more frequent in the completely fasted group. All these factors showed statistically significant values (p oncologist if they could fast, while only 15% of patients during Ramadan asked an imam if they could be excused from fasting. A comparison of the QLQ-C30 data showed a significant improvement in emotional functioning with fasting, however, patients had clinically more but not significantly fatigue after fasting. Conclusion: Female gender, good WHO, non-metastatic disease, and oral or outpatient treatment were more likely to be fasting. This study argues that fasting did not influence the quality of life, and appears to significantly improve emotional functioning in cancer patients during Ramadan.

Quality of life and psychological impact among chronic disease patients during the COVID-19 pandemic

Objective:Patients diagnosed with chronic disease may experience psychological symptoms including depression,anxiety,insomnia,and fatigue,all of which may adversely affect their quality of life(QoL).The main objective of this study is to identify the level of QoL,to know the prevalence of these symptoms among chronic disease patients in Oman during the third wave of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,and to explore the contributing factors.Methods:A cross-sectional and descriptive correlational design was used.Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants.Data were collected using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Therapy(FACT)-General,Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale,the Insomnia Severity Index,and the FACT-Fatigue subscale via Qualtrics®software.Linear regression analyses were used to explore factors that were associated with QoL.Results:Of 990 patients with chronic disease who participated,the mean total QoL score was 67.7(standard deviation=16.1).Participants aged above 51,those with a basic education,those with heart disease,or those with more than one comorbidity had a significantly lower QoL.Linear regression revealed that the main factors associated with lower QoL included heart disease(β=0.05,P=0.02),diabetes(β=0.12,P<0.01),having taken one dose of COVID-19 vaccine(β=0.05,P=0.04),anxiety(β=−0.24,P<0.01),depression(β=−0.31,P<0.01),insomnia(β=−0.12,P<0.01),and fatigue(β=0.27,P<0.01).Conclusions:The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly reduced the individuals’level of QoL and affected the mental health of patients diagnosed with chronic diseases.Appropriate strategies to monitor psychological problems and interventions to prevent and reduce these among such patients are needed.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in some foods have a wide-range of health benefits. The omega-3 supplementation results in higher antioxidant activity in human seminal fluid and enhanced sperm count, sperm motility, and sperm morphology. Considerable number of infertile men with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia might be benefit from omega-3 fatty acids administration.

To the editor,We would like to share our feedback on the publication“Is China ready for monkeypox?”.1 Wei documented the wide range of clinical prob-lems associated with monkeypox.Wei mentioned that it is necessary to strengthen the prevention method against monkeypox.Usually,in addition to a fever,the patient with monkeypox has a skin problem,usually vesicula lesions.However,it is possible that neither a fever nor a skin lesion is present in a patient with monkeypox.2 According to a recent report by Benites-Zapata et al.,the meta-analysis results showed that rash occurs in 93%and fever in 72%of patients with mon-keypox.3 Without the atypical appearance of lesions,the doctor can fail to identify the issue and incorrectly diagnose the disease.4 In addition,the general laboratory inquiry is commonly based on the evaluation of crust or vesicle clinical samples.Therefore,it is clear that skin lesion is considered to be a typical clinical problem in almost all published re-ports.It is important to recognize that some patients display only odd symptoms,such as gastrointestinal and neurological conditions.

Taurine is a sulfur-containing,semi-essential amino acid that occurs naturally in the body.It alternates between inflammation and oxidative stress-mediated injury in various disease models.As part of its limiting functions,taurine also modulates endoplasmic reticulum stress,Ca^(2+)homeostasis,and neuronal activity at the molecular level.Taurine effectively protects against a number of neurological disorders,including stro ke,epilepsy,cerebral ischemia,memory dysfunction,and spinal cord injury.Although various therapies are available,effective management of these disorders remains a global challenge.Approximately 30 million people are affected worldwide.The design of taurine fo rmation co uld lead to potential drugs/supplements for the health maintenance and treatment of central nervous system disorders.The general neuroprotective effects of taurine and the various possible underlying mechanisms are discussed in this review.This article is a good resource for understanding the general effects of taurine on various diseases.Given the strong evidence for the neuropharmacological efficacy of taurine in various experimental paradigms,it is concluded that this molecule should be considered and further investigated as a potential candidate for neurotherapeutics,with emphasis on mechanism and clinical studies to determine efficacy.
