Microbial transformations of toxic monomethylmercury(MMHg) and dissolved gaseous mercury(DGM) at the lower levels of the marine food web are not well understood, especially in oligotrophic and phosphorus-limited seas. To examine the effects of probable phosphorus limitation(~PP-limitation) on relations between mercury(Hg) fractions and microorganisms, we determined the total mercury(THg), total methylated mercury(MeHg), DGM, and microbiological and chemical parameters in the Central Adriatic Sea. Using statistical analysis, we assessed the potential microbial effects on Hg transformations and bioaccumulation. Only in the absence of ~PP-limitation conditions(^(NO–P)P-limitation) is MeHg significantly related to most chemical and microbial parameters, indicating metabolism-dependent Hg *** heterotrophic activity of low nucleic acid bacteria(abundant in oligotrophic regions)seems responsible for most of Hg methylation under ^(NO–P)P-limitation. Under these conditions,DGM is strongly related to microbial fractions and chlorophyll a, indicating biological DGM production, which is probably not metabolically induced, as most of these relations are also observed underPP-limitation. MMHg biomagnification was observed through an increased bioaccumulation factor from microseston to mesozooplankton. Our results indicate that Hgtransformations and uptake might be enhanced under ^(NO–P)P-limitation conditions, emphasizing their impact on the transfer of Hg to higher trophic levels.

Despite its essential importance to various spatial agriculture and environmental applications,the information on actual cropland area and its geographical distribution remain highly uncertain over Africa among remote-sensing *** of the African regions has its unique physical and environmental limiting factors to accurate cropland mapping,which leads to high spatial discre-pancies among remote sensing cropland *** no dataset could cope with all limitations,multiple datasets initially derived from various remote sensing sensors and classification techniques must be integrated into a more accurate cropland product than individual ***,in the current study,four cropland products,produced initially from multiple sensors(***-8 OLI,Sentinel-2 MSI,and PROBA-V)to cover the period(2015-2017),were integrated based on their cropland mapping accuracy to build a more accurate cropland *** four cropland layers’accuracy was assessed at Agro-ecological zones units via an inten-sive reference dataset(17,592 samples).The most accurate crop-land layer was then identified for each zone to construct the final cropland mask at 30 m resolution for the nominal year of 2016 over *** a result,the new layer was produced in higher cropland mapping accuracy(overall accuracy=91.64%and cropland’s F-score=0.75).The layer mapped the African cropland area as 282 Mha(9.38%of the Continent area).Compared to earlier crop-land synergy layers,the constructed cropland mask showed a considerable improvement in its spatial resolution(30 m instead of 250 m),mapping quality,and closeness to official statistics(R^(2)=0.853 and RMSE=2.85 Mha).The final layer can be down-loaded as described under the“Data Availability Statement”section.

Magnetocardiography capabilities in myocardium injuries diagnosis

Objective: The electrophysiological properties of the myocardium are extremely heterogeneous. Verification of new magnetocardiography (MCG) signs appears an important aspect for severity assessment of ischemic myocardium damage, ischemic heart disease (IHD) course prognosis, determining of indications for preventive “aggressive” therapy and estimation of its efficacy in patients with IHD. The objective of this research was the investigation of magnetocardiography (MCG) capabilities in diagnosis of ischemic and inflammatory myocardial injuries using new MCG markers of the spatiotemporal organization of myocardium excitation. Methods and results: There were 128 patients examined in three groups. Group 1 contained 34 healthy volunteers. Group 2 contained 62 patients with IHD diagnosis. Group 3 included 32 comparatively young patients with acute myocarditis diagnosis. MCG-mapping of patients was performed at rest on the 7-channel MCG-scanners “Cardiomagscan” V 3.1 (Company KMG, Ukraine) in non-shielded MCG laboratory. 11 MCG markers were determined for selected time intervals of the cardiac cycle. Obtained data provided evidences about significant differences in values of proposed MCG markers for various groups. In patients with AMI, rate of parameters change is higher than without AMI (Sub-groups 2.1 and 2.2 differ by 8 MCG markers). Patients of 2nd and 3rd groups are different from healthy patients by 8 of 11 markers. Analysis of the obtained data has demonstrated good capabilities of MCG in differential diagnostics. Application of discriminatory analysis allowed us to get classification functions, which could be used (with 82% accuracy) to qualify the just examined patient to the investigated categories. Conclusion: Based on the new methodological approach during the studies, the most informative MCG-criteria of space-temporal organization of myocardium excitation in patients with IHD has been proposed. Venous thromboembolic risk and protein S deficiency: ethnic difference and remaining issues

Protein S deficiency is an autosomal dominant disorder that results from mutations in the protein S gene (PROS1). Inherited deficiency of protein S constitutes a risk factor for venous thromboembolism. Protein S functions as a nonenzymatic cofactor for activated protein C in the proteolytic degradation of coagulation factors V a and Villa. The frequency of protein S deficiency seems to differ between populations. More than 200 rare mutations in PROS1 have been identified in patients with protein S deficiency. Among the prevalent mutations within PROS1, the S460P substitution (known as Heerlen polymorphism) detected in Caucasians and the K196E substitution (known as protein S Tokushima) found in Japanese have been intensively studied for their structures and potential functions in the disorder of protein S deficiency. Until now, causative mutations in PROS1 have been found in only approximately 50% of cases with protein S deficiency. Co-segregation analysis of microsatellite haplotypes with protein S deficiency in families with protein S deficiency suggests that the causative defects in the PROS1 mutation-negative patients are located in or close to the PROS 1 gene. Large PROS 1 gene deletions have been identified in 3 out of 9 PROS 1 mutation-negative Swedish VTE families with protein S deficiency and 1 out of 6 PROS1 mutation-negative Japanese patients with protein S deficiency. Intensive sequencing of the entire PROS 1 gene, including introns, may be needed to identify the cryptic mutations in those patients, and these efforts might uncover the pathogenesis of protein S deficiency.

Association between serum homocysteine and arterial stiffness in elderly： a community-based study

Background Arterial stiffness and homocysteine are both powerful predictors of cardiovascular disease, especially in older popula tions. Previous studies have investigated the association of homocysteine with arterial stiffness in human subjects, while the relationship between homocysteine and arterial stiffness in the elderly is still indefinite. The current study examined the association of homocysteine with arterial stiffness in Chinese community-based elderly persons. Methods We related serum levels of homocysteine to two measures of arte- rial stiffness （carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity （PWV） and carotid-radial PWV） in 780 participants （46.3% men, mean age 71.9 years （ranging 65-96 years old）） from two communities of Beijing, China. Arterial stiffness were measured within two days of the time of bio- marker measurement. Results In multiple-adjusted models, homocysteine levels was strongly associated with the carotid-femoral PWV （standardized 13 = 0.13, P 〈 0.001）, even after adjustment for classical risk factors of cardiovascular disease. The association is also stronger when the carotid-femoral PWV is elevated above normal, whereas no significant association with homocysteine was observed for ca-rotid-radial PWV. Conclusions In Chinese elderly persons, serum homocysteine levels are associated with alterations of aortic stiffness.

Background: Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder with a complex genetic factor determining its disease onset. Nevertheless, it is not clear in this mental disorder. Objective: To conduct a systematic review of articles regarding the genetic markers and mutations in schizophrenia. Methods: A systematic review of articles on genetic markers and mutations in schizophrenia, published from January 1, 2011, to September 7, 2015, on SCOPUS database was carried out. Search terms were “Genetic markers”, “Mutation”, and “Schizophrenia”. Results: Of the 527 retrieved studies, 31 met the eligibility criteria. Genetic polymorphism, Immune-associated genes, TCF4 and ZNF804A association with microRNA, Neuregulin gene, Chromosome 13q32 and 11p15.4, genes involved in glutamatergic via schizophrenia and brain structure, appeared to be associated with the origin of schizophrenia. Conclusion: Some studies show genes involved in several pathways leading to the disease pathogenesis such as that one related with the dopaminergic and immune system, or rare alleles. Some genes present no involvement in the etiology of this mental disorder. These findings clarify the genetic complexity of schizophrenia and affirm that together, the genes have an overall effect greater than the sum of the individual effect of each gene.

Long term outcomes of drug-eluting stent versus coronary artery bypass grafting for left main coronary artery disease： a meta-analysis

Background It is still controversial whether percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stent （DES） is safe and effective compared to coronary artery bypass graft surgery （CABG） for unprotected left main coronary artery （ULMCA） disease at long-term follow up （≥3 years）. Methods Eligible studies were selected by searching PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library up to December 6, 2016. The primary endpoint was a composite of death, myocardial infarction （MI） or stroke during the longest follow-up. Death, cardiac death, MI, stroke and repeat revascularization were the secondary outcomes. Results Four randomized controlled trials and twelve adjusted observational studies involving 14,130 patients were included. DES was comparable to CABG regarding the occurrence of the primary endpoint （FIR = 0.94, 95% CI： 0.86-1.03）. Besides, DES was significantly associated with higher incidence of MI （HR = 1.56, 95% CI： 1.09-2.22） and repeat revascularization （HR = 3.09, 95% CI： 2.33-4.10） compared with CABG, while no difference was found between the two strategies regard as the rate of death, cardiac death and stroke. Furthermore, DES can reduce the risk of the composite endpoint of death, MI or stroke （HR = 0.80, 95% CI： 0.67-0.95） for ULMCA lesions with SYNTAX score ≤32. Conclusions Although with higher risk of repeat revascularization, PCI with DES appears to be as safe as CABG for ULMCA disease at long-term follow up. In addition, treatment with DES could be an alternative interventional strategy to CABG for ULMCA lesions with low to intermediate anatomic complexity.
