Application of wave equation theory to improve dynamic cone penetration test for shallow soil characterisation

Among the geotechnical in situ tests,the dynamic penetration test(DPT)is commonly used around the world.However,DPT remains a rough technique and provides only one failure parameter:blow count or cone resistance.This paper presents an improvement of the dynamic cone penetration test(DcPT)for soil characterisation based on the wave equation theory.Implemented on an instrumented lightweight dynamic penetrometer driving with variable energy,the main process of the test involves the separation and reconstruction of the waves propagating in the rods after each blow and provides a dynamic cone load-penetration(DcLT)curve.An analytical methodology is used to analyse this curve and to estimate additional strength and deformation parameters of the soil:dynamic and pseudo-static cone resistances,deformation modulus and wave velocity.Tests carried out in the laboratory on different specimens(wood,concrete,sand and clay)in an experimental sand pit and in the field demonstrated that the resulting DcLT curve is reproducible,sensitive and reliable to the test conditions(rod length,driving energy,etc.)as well as to the soil properties(nature,density,etc.).Obtained results also showed that the method based on shock polar analysis makes it possible to evaluate mechanical impedance and wave velocity of soils,as demonstrated by the comparisons with cone penetration test(cPT)and shear wave velocity measurements made in the field.This technique improves the method and interpretation of DPT and provides reliable data for shallow foundation design.

A REVIEW OF TAcTIcAL PLANNING MODELS

The aim of this paper is to give an overview on models and methods used to solve tactical planning problems. The modeling and the elaboration of the well-know tactical planning problems （master planning ＆ scheduling, material requirement planning and multi-site planning） are discussed. These problems are modeled from two ＂lot sizing＂ models called the capacitated Lot Sizing Problem （cLSP） and Multi Level capacitated Lot Sizing Problem （MLcLSP）. From both models, a lot of extensions has been proposed in the literature. The purpose of this paper is twofold： first, classifications of the cLSP and MLcLSP as well as their extensions are given. For each model, the major scientific contributions are mentioned. These classifications made from seventy papers give an overview of ＂lot sizing＂ models dedicated to the MPS, MRP and Multi-site and show the diversity of models. Second, from a classification, an analysis of methods used for each model is given. The instance size, best gap and reference for gap computation are given for each contribution, This work can be used to elaborate an optimization tool for tactical planning problematic such as Advanced Planning System.

We consider the numerical solution of the free boundary Bernoulli problem by employing level set formulations. Using a perturbation technique, we derive a second order method that leads to a fast iteration solver. The iteration procedure is adapted in order to work in the case of topology changes. Various numerical experiments confirm the efficiency of the derived numerical method.

Patatin-like PLA<sub>2</sub>with cytotoxicity against mammalian and plant tumour cells

Plants can respond to traumatism by synthesis and secretion of defence molecules. Wound-healing and desiccation stress of pieces of potato tuber parenchyma (Solanum tuberosum) promoted the secretion of a patatin-like phospholipase A2, PLA2 (Ec.3.***.1.4.) that displayed cytotoxic activity against tumour cells. The potato secretion product, an oligomeric form of patatin-like protein, was shown to contain several isoforms of PLA2 polypeptides and to be associated with other proteins, including Kunitz-type protease inhibitors. Patatin-like protein secretion was inhibited by vanadate. Secreted patatin-like proteins displayed specific features, such as extracellular function and low molecular weights, mainly 36 to 40 kDa. The 36-kDa polypeptide sequence was related to iPLA2α. Polypeptide spots of secreted patatin-like protein exhibited a nucleotide-binding consensus motif, GGGIKG that has been described in iPLA2 gene family. The cytotoxic agent caused cell death of plant crown-gall induced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and inhibited B16 cell proliferation, but at the same concentration did not display any toxicity against non-transformed cells. PLA2 enzyme activity was required for cytotoxicity against B16 melanoma cells. A model for such a specific activity against tumour cells is discussed in connection with asymmetric phospholipid patterns of cell membranes. In conclusion, secreted patatin-like PLA2 (e-patatin) may represent a novel therapeutic target for the development of new agents against cancer.

Aims One critical challenge for plants is to maintain an adequate nutrient supply under fluctuating environmental conditions.This is particularly true for epiphytic species that have limited or no access to the pedosphere and often live in harsh climates.Bromeliads have evolved key innovations such as epiphytism,water-absorbing leaf trichomes,tank habit and crassulacean acid metabolism(cAM)photosynthesis that enable them to survive under various environmental conditions.Bromeliads encompass diverse ecological types that live on different substrates(they can be terrestrial,epilithic or epiphytic)and vary in their ability to retain water(they can be tank-forming or tankless)and photosynthetic pathway(i.e.c3 or cAM).In this review,we outline the nutritional modes and specializations that enable bromeliads to thrive in a wide range of nutrient-poor(mostly nitrogen-depleted)environments.Important FindingsBromeliads have evolved a great diversity of morphologies and functional adaptations leading to the existence of numerous nutritional modes.Focusing on species that have absorptive foliar trichomes,we review evidence that bromeliads have evolved multi-faceted nutritional strategies to respond to fluctuations in the supply of natural nitrogen(N).These plants have developed mutualistic associations with many different and functionally diverse terrestrial and aquatic microorganisms and metazoans that contribute substantially to their mineral nutrition and,thus,their fitness and survival.Bacterial and fungal microbiota-assisted N provisioning,protocarnivory,digestive mutualisms and myrmecotrophic pathways are the main strategies used by bromeliads to acquire nitrogen.The combination of different nutritional pathways in bromeliads represents an important adaptation enabling them to exploit nutrient-poor habitats.Nonetheless,as has been shown for several other vascular plants,multiple partners are involved in nutrient acquisition indicating that there have been convergent adaptations to nutrient scarcity.Finally,we point ou

Intraspecific chemical Variability of Essential Oil of Hoslundia opposita

chemical investigation on leaves oil of Hoslundia opposita, aromatic plant used in traditional medicine, harvested from 20 localities of c?te d’Ivoire was realized by Gc and Gc/MS. In total, 101 compounds were identified accounting to 92% - 99%, aromatic compounds such benzyl benzoate and sesquiterpenes namely germacrene D, β-caryophyllene and α-humulene hydroxyl were found as the major constituents. As regard, the chemical profiles of our samples, it was found a great chemical variability suggesting a high polymorphism degree. In order to study this chemical variability, the results were submitted to the principal components and cluster analysis which allowed distinguishing two main groups of essential oils with respect to sampling site. The cluster I was dominated by benzyl benzoate (15%) and thymol (7.4%) comprising 6 localities, cluster II was characterized by phytol (8.5%) and α-humulene (7%) and constituted by 14 localities.

Eco-innovative design approach： Integrating quality and environmental aspects in prioritizing and solving engineering problems

This study proposes an eco-innovative design process taking into consideration quality and environ- mental aspects in prioritizing and solving technical engineering problems. This approach provides a synergy between the Life cycle Assessment （LcA）, the non- quality matrix, the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving （TRIZ）, morphological analysis and the Analytical Hier- archy Process （AHP）. In the sequence of these tools, LcA assesses the environmental impacts generated by the system. Then, for a better consideration of environmental aspects, a new tool is developed, the non-quality matrix, which defines the problem environmental point of view. to be solved first from an The TRIZ method allows the generation of new concepts and contradiction resolution. Then, the morphological analysis offers the possibility of extending the search space of solutions in a design problem in a systematic way. Finally, the AHP identifies the promising solution（s） by providing a clear logic for the choice made. Their usefulness has been demonstrated through their application to a case study involving a centrifugal spreader with spinning discs.

Enhancing the reusability and interoperability of artificial neural networks with DEVS modeling and simulation

Artificial neural networks(ANNs),a branch of artificial intelligence,has become a very interesting domain since the eighties when back-propagation(BP)learning algorithm for multilayer feed-forward architecture was introduced to solve nonlinear problems.It is used extensively to solve complex nonalgorithmic problems such as prediction,pattern recognition and clustering.However,in the context of a holistic study,there may be a need to integrate ANN with other models developed in various paradigms to solve a problem.In this paper,we suggest discrete event system specification(DEVS)be used as a model of computation(Moc)to make ANN models interoperable with other models(since all discrete event models can be expressed in DEVS,and continuous models can be approximated by DEVS).By combining ANN and DEVS,we can model the complex configuration of ANNs and express its internal workings.Therefore,we are extending the DEVS-based ANN proposed by Toma et al.[A new DEVS-based generic art-ficial neural network modeling approach,The 23rd European Modeling and Simulation Symp.(Simulation in Industry),Rome,Italy,2011]for comparing multiple configuration parameters and learning algorithms and also to do prediction.The DEVS models are described using the high level language for system specification(HiLLS),[Ma¨ıga et al.,A new approach to modeling dynamic structure systems,The 29th European Modeling and Simulation Symp.(Simulation in Industry),Leicester,United Kingdom,2015]a graphical modeling language for clarity.The developed platform is a tool to transform ANN models into DEVS computational models,making them more reusable and more interoperable in the context of larger multi-perspective modeling and simulation(MAS).

The high level language for system specification: A model-driven approach to systems engineering

We present HiLLS(High Level Language for System Specification),a graphical formalism that allows to specify Discrete Event System(des)models for analysis using methodologies like simulation,formal methods and enactment.HiLLS’syntax is built from the integration of concepts from System Theory and Software Engineering aided by simple concrete notations to describe the structural and behavioral aspects of dess.This paper provides the syntax of HiLLS and its simulation semantics which is based on the Discrete Event System Specification(DEVS)formalism.From DEVS-based Modeling and Simulation(M&S)perspective,HiLLS is a platform-independent visual language with generic expressions that can serve as a front-end for most existing DEVS-based simulation environments with the aid of Model-Driven Engineering(MDE)techniques.It also suggests ways to fill some gaps in existing DEVS-based visual formalisms that inhibit complete specification of the behavior of complex dess.We provide a case study to illustrate the core features of the language.
