The article presents an ontology called“Science”designed for representing proved and disproved statements extracted from scientific papers from the database of the ProOptibeef *** argue that the proved and disproved statements are the best characterization of the content of the papers they are extracted *** show that ontological representation of proved and disproved statements not only facilitates the access to the content of the papers and increases the precision of a semantical search,but also allows for an automatic generation of new statements from the ones already coded in the ontology.

Discrimination and ejection of eggs and nestlings by the fan-tailed gerygone from New Caledonia

Nestling rejection is a rare type of host defense against brood parasitism compared with egg ***,host defenses at both egg and nestling stages could be based on similar underlying discrimination mechanisms but,due to the rarity of nestling rejector hosts,few studies have actually tested this *** investigated egg and nestling discrimination by the fan-tailed gerygone Gerygone flavolateralis,a host that seemingly accepts nonmimetic eggs of its parasite,the shining bronze-cuckoo Chalcites lucidus,but ejects mimetic parasite *** introduced artificial eggs or nestlings and foreign gerygone nestlings in gerygone nests and compared begging calls of parasite and host *** found that the gerygone ejected artificial eggs only if their size was smaller than the parasite or host *** of artificial nestlings did not depend on whether their color matched that of the *** frequency of ejection increased during the course of the breeding season mirroring the increase in ejection frequency of parasite nestlings by the ***-fostered gerygone nestlings were frequently ejected when lacking natal down and when introduced in the nest before hatching of the foster brood,but only occasionally when they did not match the color of the foster *** calls differed significantly between parasite and host nestlings throughout the nestling *** results suggest that the fan-tailed gerygone accepts eggs within the size range of gerygone and cuckoo eggs and that nestling discrimination is based on auditory and visual cues other than skin *** highlights the importance of using a combined approach to study discrimination mechanisms of hosts.

Most long-distance migrating passerines that breed in Europe spend their winters in Africa,with only a few species migrating eastward to spend the non-breeding period in South *** use of the Indo-European flyway is rare and has been poorly studied so ***,it is extremely interesting as within that system we are currently witnessing a recent range expansion of European breeding long distance migrants and thus the lengthening of migration *** may therefore conceal a unique migratory strategies and behaviour that can help us to understand the underlying factors and mechanisms determining the evolution of migration routes,strategies and breeding range *** on light-level geolocator we reveal a first track of the Citrine Wagtail(Motacilla citreola)migration,providing insight into the migration pattern,timing and behaviour of the species that recently has extended its migration ***,the studied individual did not retrace a recent range expansion that runs north and east from the Caspian Sea but followed a migration route running south form the Caspian sea,suggesting possible presence of an alternative species range *** overall migration distance between the breeding site in Poland and the non-breeding site in Pakistan was about 10,420 km and included two endurance movement phases(920 and 2240 km)covering 30%of the whole journey length,with an average movement speed of 574 km/*** explain this migration behaviour as an adaptation for crossing the ecological barriers imposed by arid environments.

Obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol are the typical features of Metabolic syndrome (MetS). Exploring the risk factors would benefit for prevention control. Several studies have revealed an association between ionizing radiation (IR) exposure and MetS, likely attributable to production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress, DNA damage. Understanding the health effects of IR exposure, which have long been overlooked, would improve knowledge on MetS and help identify effective strategies for targeted prevention of MetS. In this review, we first highlight the importance of IR and MetS, providing information on the wide use of IR in the field, IR-induced damage, and the prevalence and burden of MetS. Then, we summarize the findings association between IR and various components of MetS addressing the dual effects of IR on MetS in a dose-response manner. Although there remain unresolved challenges, study on the association of radiation and MetS could open new perspectives in the future.

AIM To evaluate circulating IL9 in inflammatory bowel disease and disease-associated anemia/cachexia and assess its potential as a mucosal healing *** Serum IL9 as well as other cytokines(IL1β, IL6, IL13, IFNγ, TNFα, and VEGF-A) were determined in 293 individuals: 97 patients with Crohn's disease(CD) and 74 with ulcerative colitis(UC) and in 122 apparently healthy controls. The clinical activity of CD and UC was expressed in terms of the Crohn's Disease Activity Index(CDAI) and the Mayo Scoring System(MDAI), respectively, and the severity of bowel inflammation in UC patients was assessed using Mayo endoscopic score. Cytokine concentrations were measured by a flow cytometry-based method using Luminex x MAP? technology. Highsensitive C-reactive protein concentrations(hs CRP) were determined in CD and UC patients using the enhanced immunoturbidimetric *** Systemic IL9 was significantly lower in healthy individuals [9 pg/m L(95%CI: 8.2-10)] than in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD): both inactive [14.3 pg/m L(11.9-19.9)] and active [27.6 pg/m L(24.5-32), P < 0.0001]. Cytokine concentrations were significantly higher in active CD [27.4 pg/m L(23.4-32.2)] and in active UC [32.7 pg/m L(27-38.9)] compared to inactive diseases [15.9 pg/m L(10.8-23.4) in CD and 19.4 pg/m L(13.9-27.1) in UC, P = 0.001]. IL9 correlated weakly with CDAI(ρ = 0.32, P = 0.003) and MDAI(ρ = 0.35, P = 0.002) and strongly with endoscopic inflammation in UC(ρ = 0.74, P < 0.0001). As a negative marker of mucosal healing(MH), IL9 had an accuracy superior to hs CRP and IL6 [97%(P < 0.0001), 67%(P = 0.071), and 55%(P = 0.525), respectively]. IL9 was significantly higher in cachectic IBD patients [30.25 pg/m L(24.4-37.5) vs 21.88 pg/m L(18-26.5), P = 0.026] and negatively correlated with hemoglobin concentrations(ρ =-0.27, P < 0.001). Male infertility might be clearly associated with aberrant DNA methylation patterns in human spermatozoa. An association between oxidative stress and the global methylation status of the sperm genome has also been suggested. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the global sperm DNA methylation status was affected in the spermatozoa of carriers of chromosome structural aberrations. The relationships between the 5-methylcytosine （msC） levels in spermatozoa and chromatin integrity status were evaluated. The study patients comprised male carriers of chromosome structural aberrations with reproductive failure （n = 24）, and the controls comprised normozoospermic sperm volunteers （n = 23）. The global msC level was measured using thin-layer chromatography （TLC） and immunofluorescence （IF） techniques. The sperm chromatin integrity was assessed using aniline blue （AB） staining and TUNEL assay. The mean msC levels were similar between the investigated chromosome structural aberrations carriers （P） and controls （K）. However, sperm chromatin integrity tests revealed significantly higher values in chromosomal rearrangement carriers than in controls （P 〈 0.05）. Although the potential relationship between sperm chromatin integrity status and sperm DNA fragmentation and the msC level juxtaposed in both analyzed groups （P vs K） was represented in a clearly opposite manner, the low chromatin integrity might be associated with the high hypomethylation status of the sperm DNA observed in carriers of chromosome structural aberrations.
