Monte Carlo simulations are an accurate but computationally expensive procedure for approximating the resultant non-Gaussian probability density function(PdF)after propagation of an initial Gaussian PdF through a nonlinear *** splitting libraries for Gaussian Mixture Models(GMMs)exist with up to five elements in the *** number of splits are extended in the present work by generating three homoscedastic univariate splitting libraries with up to 39 *** GMMs are typically handled with splits along a single ***,we generate a regular multidirectional grid over the initial multivariate Gaussian distribution by recursively applying the splitting library along multiple *** splitting direction is arbitrary and no longer limited to directions parallel to the columns of the square-root of the covariance matrix.A second order Stirling’s interpolation of the nonlinear function evaluated at the mean of the initial Gaussian distribution is used to quantify nonlinearity along candidate splitting *** directions with the highest nonlinearity benefit most from *** Multidirectional GMM(MGMM)has applications for uncertainty quantification with computationally intensive nonlinear *** variable number of splits in each direction allows for a spectrum of models in the accuracy versus compute time design space,filling the gap between expensive Monte Carlos and fast linearized *** multidirectional method is demonstrated with four test cases,including an orbit uncertainty propagation case,to illustrate the benefit of splitting along multiple directions and of ranking the splitting directions.

In view of the increasingly severe exploitation of minority shareholders and the existence of double agency costs in China, it is necessary to provide strong protection for minority shareholders in China in order to build an investor-friendly system. By enabling minority shareholders to prevent misconducts of majority shareholders and managers, legal system has made significant progress in the past twenty years. Nevertheless, many defects still exist. The first enactment of the PRC Company Law was passed in 1992 with primary goal to serve reform of state-owned enterprises and therefore protection for minority shareholders was excluded by the scope of these reforms. The revision of the Company Law in 2005 was regarded as historical progress of Chinese company law in respect of providing protection for minority shareholders as many rights are conferred on shareholders and more measures were adopted to restrain the power of directors and controlling shareholders. However, this paper identifies that these various rights and protective mechanisms have certain deficiencies, which means that the interests of minority shareholders suppose to be guaranteed would be inevitably affected. Without improvements and clarifications of the existing legal protection in the future, interests of shareholders and company as a whole will be obstructed ultimately and development of capital markets will be significantly impeded.

China＇s recent declaration of principles on its exchange rate mechanism has made it very clear that any move should be on China＇s own initiative; such a move should be sustainable and under control. China has adopted gradualism in the exchange rate reform process. On July 21st, 2005, China changed Renminbi （RMB） pariy （appreciation） by 2 percent, signaling the exchange market reform process. This paper is to study the past history of the crawling-peg of RMB on the US dollar with a view of its future reform. The flexibility provided by the crawling-peg still fits well with China＇s status quo. However, the flexible mechanism should follow the trend of China＇s economic development with well-timed parity changes. The extent of the fluctuation band rests upon China＇s ability to maintain its currency stability to counter future speculation and shocks. Only when the market mechanism is restored in China can an equilibrium RMB exchange rate be reached.

during recent years, along with the deepening of reform and opening up to the outside world, China's poverty problem has gradually changed from a problem of rural poverty to the co-existence of rural and urban poverty. In this article, the authors review the existing poverty standards and overall poverty situation in China, and assess the performance of the state's current anti-poverty policies. In view of the main problems in existing anti-poverty policies, the authors suggest the coordinated development of urban and rural areas. Through establishing unified poverty standards, monitoring systems and anti-poverty policies, equal emphasis will be given to poverty alleviation in both areas. And the social security and employment systems in both urban and rural areas will be coordinated.

Genomic Landscape of Human Embryonic Stem Cells

AN OBJECT-ORIENTEd EXPERT SYSTEM FOR TROUBLESHOOTING REFINERY dISTILLATION COLUMNS

Human embryonic stem cells (ESC) hold great potential for cellular therapy and provide a unique system to study genes that are involved in the earliest stages of differentiation during embryo development. The ability to manipulate the differentiation and proliferation of stem cells remains a major challenge in the successful harnessing of stem cell for cell-based therapeutics. Mechanism involved in regulating self-renewal and cell fate decision in ESC are poorly understood. Recent advance in genomic technology allow for probing deep into the genomic landscape of stem cells to identify known and novel genetic elements and signaling pathways that play key roles in conferring ES stem cell pluripotency, self-renewal, and differentiation. Transcriptome profiling of human and murine ESC to identify conserved and divergent paths required to maintain the ESC state using novel technology (MPSS) will be discussed in this talk. delineation of the molecular mechanism of stem cell phenotypes could provide handles to in vitro manipulate the ES cells and derive unlimited amounts of specific cell types as regenerative medicine for cellular therapy.

An object-oriented prototype expert system ORdEES for off-line trouble-shooting of refinery distillation columns is developed. It is found that highly modular knowledge base can be designed, and different types of data (e.g., graphs, numberical data, and algorithms) may be manipulated, by using object-oriented knowledge representation. In addition, a method termed Object-Oriented Multifunction Switcher is proposed for building multifunction expert systems. The results of the study are expected to be useful for designing multifunction expert systems for complex petroleum refining and petro-chemical processes with many kinds of equipment.
