Microstructural Characteristics and Stability in a RapidlySolidified Al-Fe-Nb-Si Alloy

The microstructure and stability in a rapidly solidified Al-Fe-Nb-Si alloy were studied by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDXS) and X-ray diffraction technique. It is shown that the addition of Nb to Al-Fe-Si alloy may increase undercooling of melt, and form the featureless zone structure, the size of the intercellular phases and the distance between intercellulars of Al-Fe-Nb-Si alloy are two times smaller than that of AI-Fe-V-Si alloy under the same conditions. Further, the microstructure of the featureless zone has the better thermal stability after annealing at 623 K for 24 h.

Silica-dispersed NiMo hydrodesulfurization catalysts were synthesized by the deposition-precipitation method. For comparative purposes, bulk NiMo catalysts were obtained by co-precipitation. The silica-dispersed NiMo catalyst had highly active metals content. Silica was employed to disperse active metals for full utilization of active components. The BET analysis showed that the silica-dispersed NiMo catalysts had a high surface area （147.0 m2/g） and pore volume （0.27 mL/g）, whereas the bulk NiMo catalysts exhibited a very low surface area （87.5 m2/g）. Transmission electron microscopy results proved that the active components were dispersed on the SiO2 substrate. X-ray diffraction patterns of the silicadispersed NiMo catalyst and the bulk NiMo catalyst were indexed to NiMoO4. The hydrodesulfurization activity of silicadispersed NiMo catalysts was much higher than that of reference catalysts and could be up to twice greater than those of commercial NiMo alumina-supported systems per gram of catalyst. The activity testing results also demonstrated that the silica-dispersed NiMo catalyst was an effective hydrodesulflarization catalyst.

Retene and methylretene have been identified by gas chromatography-mass spec-trometry in aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of Silurian carbonate extracts of the Michigan Basin. Retene identified in pre-Devonian carbonates indicates that the compound not only is the biomarker of higher plants but also derived from alga or bacterium. The geochemical significance of methylretene has been discussed.

Chemical structure of immature sulfur_rich kerogen and composition of immature sulfur_rich crude oil in Jianghan oil field have been studied. In molecular level, crude oil differs from thermolysed and chemolysed products of kerogen but does resemble the bitumen in immature sulfur_rich source rock. Therefore, immature sulfur_rich oil may be derived from the expelling of bitumen rather than from thermal cracking of kerogen.
